Victims of Chinese student who raped 10 women tell of being ‘haunted' by attack
Victims of a Chinese PhD student who drugged and raped 10 women in London and China have told of being 'haunted' by his attacks on them. Zhenhao Zou, 28, kept a trophy box of women's belongings and filmed nine of the rapes on women as they lost consciousness. Three of the 10 victims have been identified, prosecutors say, but Metropolitan Police detectives fear he could have targeted dozens more women. At Zou's sentencing hearing at Inner London Crown Court on Thursday, victim impact statements from the three identified women were read out. One of them was raped after Zou pushed her to drink excessive amounts of alcohol and would not let her leave his flat in Elephant and Castle in May 2023. She wrote in her statement: 'I cannot determine how long this incident will affect me, but I know that the impact has deeply affected my personality, and it will likely persist long-term. I no longer believe in the inherent goodness of people, because I have never encountered such severe criminal behaviour before. 'I am constantly confused about why some people are capable of doing such terrible things. When I recall that night, I think I should have done more, perhaps I should have screamed and called the police, instead of just screaming, which didn't change much. 'Maybe I should have destroyed his belongings, but I didn't do any of that. This sense of guilt has continued to haunt me.' She added: 'I have lost faith in human beings, I have no trust in others. Before this incident, I was not aware that a human could do such evil things. When I meet with strangers, I get flashbacks of what he did.' The woman told of feeling 'fear' towards Zou, saying his family is 'very powerful' in China. A second woman, who is now living in China, was also raped by Zou in his student flat near Russell Square in October 2021 when she was unconscious, the court heard. She said in her statement: 'I experienced for the first time a loss of consciousness. I opened my eyes for a few seconds during the sexual assault in his room, he was thrusting violently against my body. 'I was completely powerless and could only use all my strength to tell him I was menstruating and demand he stop his actions. 'Although I lost consciousness just moments later, his face in that moment will clearly stay in my mind forever. As a result, I now experience severe physical and psychological distress.' The woman also told of feeling 'waves of nausea and disgust' after she was attacked. She added: 'I know words will never fully convey the depth of this wound. But one thing is certain, what happened that night is etched into my soul forever. His face, his expression – they will never leave me. I will never forgive him.' More than 20 women contacted the force following publicity in the media around Zou's trial to say they think they may have been attacked by him. Prosecutors say among them was a victim in China, known as Female D. In her statement, she wrote of being 'trapped in self blame', 'gagged by shame' and being 'haunted' by nightmares of what happened. After a month-long trial, Zou, who was most recently living in Elephant and Castle, south-east London, was found guilty of raping three women in London and another seven in China between September 2019 and May 2023. He was convicted of 11 counts of rape, with two of the offences relating to one victim. Zou was also convicted of three counts of voyeurism, 10 of possession of an extreme pornographic image, one of false imprisonment and three of possession of a controlled drug with intent to commit a sexual offence, namely butanediol. Prosecutors said Zou appeared to be 'a smart and charming young man', but was in fact 'a persistent sexual predator, a voyeur and a rapist'. He comes from a wealthy family, affording a Rolex, a wardrobe of designer clothes, cosmetic procedures such as a hair transplant and facial surgery, and thousands in monthly rent while living in London as an international engineering student. Zou, who also used the name Pakho online, befriended fellow Chinese students on WeChat and dating apps, before inviting them for drinks and drugging them at his flats in London or an unknown location in China. The student first moved to Belfast in 2017 to study mechanical engineering at Queen's University before heading to London in 2019 to do a master's degree and then a PhD at UCL. His crimes began to be uncovered in November 2023, when a woman went to police to allege that she had been attacked by Zou. There was not enough evidence to bring a criminal charge over her claim, but when Zou's phone was seized officers found disturbing videos of him raping unconscious women, and pipettes and sedating drugs in his flat. Judge Rosina Cottage, who will sentence Zou on Thursday afternoon, said: 'I find him to be dangerous, he will be getting a long sentence.'

At the end of his trial in March, Metropolitan Police detectives said they fear he could have targeted more than 50 more potential victims. More than 20 women contacted the force following publicity in the media around Zou's trial to say they think they may have been attacked by him. When he was convicted, Judge Rosina Cottage said he is a 'dangerous and predatory sexual offender' and warned him he faces a 'very long' jail term when he is sentenced on Thursday. After a month-long trial, Zou, who was most recently living in Elephant and Castle, south-east London, was found guilty of raping three women in London and another seven in China between September 2019 and May 2023. There was not enough evidence to bring a criminal charge over her claim, but when Zou's phone was seized officers found disturbing videos of him raping unconscious women, and pipettes and sedating drugs in his flat. One of the two victims who has been identified by police told the jury she was raped after Zou pushed her to drink excessive amounts of alcohol and would not let her leave his flat in Elephant and Castle in May 2023. The second, who is now living in China, said she was also raped by Zou, in his student flat near Russell Square in October 2021, when she was unconscious. The case has chilling parallels with Reynhard Sinaga, 41, who was jailed for life in January 2020 at Manchester Crown Court after being found guilty of 159 counts of sexual offences against 48 different men. He also befriended his victims and invited them back to his flat, before drugging and sexually assaulting them. There was also the case of serial killer Stephen Port, who received a whole life term after raping and murdering four men with overdoses of the sedative drug GHB, and drugging and sexually assaulting seven others who survived. UK detectives have said the Chinese authorities were 'responsive and helpful' over the investigation into Zou, although no properties where he lived in China have been searched even though many of his crimes took place on Chinese soil. After Zou's trial they began discussions with China about whether social media appeals to potential victims could be made on WeChat and Little Red Book, which are more commonly used in the country. Zou was convicted of rapes that he committed in China in a UK court because foreign nationals living in Britain can be convicted of crimes committed abroad if the act is an offence in both countries.

Opioid ‘hundred times stronger than heroin' linked to UK clubbing deaths for first time
Two people in their twenties have died in London after allegedly consuming a super-strong opioid drug, the first that experts have linked in the UK to the new substance. Warned that they can be hundreds of times stronger than heroin, nitazenes are a newer form of synthetic opioid and can be mis-sold as drugs including oxycodone, which is a highly addictive prescription drug used to treat pain. A 20-year-old woman and a 28-year-old man are understood to have taken the drug after visiting a club in south London over the May bank holiday weekend. The blue tablets, which are marked with the number 80, could potentially be mistaken for 'oxys', which can help users fall asleep. In a statement on their social media page, the nightclub Ministry of Sound in Elephant and Castle said: 'We have been informed of a dangerous batch of blue-green pills marked with '80' are being sold across London. 'These pills have been linked to hospitalisations and tragically two confirmed fatalities. 'Reports indicate they contain synthetic opioids, along with traces of ketamine and MDMA. They are being mis-sold as Ecstasy or Oxycodone, and investigations are ongoing.' They encouraged anyone who was feeling unwell while at the venue to seek medical help immediately from their on-site team. The Cause, in east London, and Fabric, in Farringdon, also posted similar messages warning people of the risks of consuming the drug. It has prompted fears ahead of festival season, with increased calls for front-of-house drug testing. Speaking to The Times, Professor Fiona Measham, the founder of drug checking charity The Loop, said: 'Up to now, there have been about two nitazene-related deaths per week in the UK, predominantly linked to contamination of opiate and street benzodiazepine markets,. 'This appears to be a leap from dependent to recreational drug using communities with the deaths of two clubbers but we don't yet know the purchase intent. If we did, we could target the appropriate groups looking to buy, for example, oxycodone or ecstasy pills.' The Home Office said: 'Every death from drugs is a tragedy and our thoughts are with the family and friends of the two individuals who have sadly lost their lives. 'We are determined to take steps to prevent drug-related deaths and we support the testing of drugs seized by the police or deposited in amnesty bins, but we cannot endorse testing for recreational users because there is no safe way to take illegal drugs. 'We are doing everything we can to tackle the evolving threat from synthetic opioids such as nitazenes, including working closely with the police to increase the number of officers carrying the opioid overdose antidote naloxone.' The Metropolitan Police said: 'We are currently investigating the death of two people at a residential address in Havelock Road, Southall. 'Met officers were called on Monday, 26 May at 16:00hrs following reports that a 20-year-old woman and a 28-year-old man had been found unresponsive. 'Paramedics from the London Ambulance Service attended the scene where both people were sadly pronounced dead. The deaths are being treated as unexpected and an investigation remains ongoing. 'Post-mortem examinations have been carried out and we await the results of toxicology findings. 'Next of kin for both the man and the woman have been informed, they are currently being supported by specialist officers.'

Discount pharmacy giant hints at opening at struggling Bray Central
The company launched its first store in Blanchardstown, Dublin, in October 2020 and now has five stores in Dublin, three in Cork, one in Carlow, two in Meath and one in Louth. Bray Central now looks to be the latest addition to the stable, with branded 'guess who's moving in' notices placed in the windows of one of the vacant units this week. The beleaguered town centre site was dealt another blow with the closure of one of its anchor food outlets, Elephant and Castle, recently, and a new Chemist Warehouse store at the central site will mean there will now be 10 pharmacies, as well as a Holland & Barrett outlet, competing in the vicinity of the main street. Chemist Warehouse is one of Australia's largest chemist retailers, with over 500 stores, and its model is to offer discounted prices for pharmaceutical goods, as well as fragrance and beauty products. The future of the Bray Central shopping centre was thrown into doubt at the end of last year, when receivers were appointed with what was believed were plans to focus on filling the remaining empty units. The addition of Chemist Warehouse, which has remained good to its pledge to continue rolling out stores nationwide since it gained a foothold in the Irish market, could well prove popular with customers in north Wicklow, given its closest outlet to Bray is in Dun Laoghaire. Meanwhile, the family food venture, The Pantry, has posted menus at its unit in Bray Central, having confirmed it will open in the unit vacated by Elephant & Castle. Although there are no details on a definitive opening date. The Pantry was established in 2016 with a focus on home-cooked food and wholesome seasonal ingredients from local producers and its menu ranges from all-day breakfasts, including a vegetarian option, from €13.95, classic lunch offerings such as the BLT for €12.95, heartier meals like carbonara and curry (€13.95) and a kids' menu. The business began in Cork city and has evolved to include high streets and shopping centres and has expanded into Kilkenny, Wexford, Waterford, Roscommon, Clare and Dublin. It currently has two restaurants in Wicklow – Kilcoole and Arklow.
