‘Incredibles 3' is in the works, and Pixar has hired a director
Peter Sohn, a longtime Disney Pixar creative whose comedy 'Elemental' helped jump-start the Emeryville-based animation company's revival in 2023, has been tapped to direct 'Incredibles 3,' which continues the story of the superhero Parr family. Brad Bird, who directed the first two 'Incredibles' movies, is writing the screenplay and will co-produce, according to a report in the Hollywood Reporter. Sohn has worked with Bird since the late 1990s, when he worked on the animation for Bird's first feature, ' The Iron Giant ' (1999), for Warner Bros. Both moved to Pixar in 2000. While Bird established an illustrious directing career with 'The Incredibles' (2004), ' Ratatouille ' (2007) and ' Incredibles 2 ' (2018) — with the live-action ' Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol ' (2011) and ' Tomorrowland ' (2015) in between — Sohn has worked as an animator, storyboard artist and voice actor for several Pixar films. Sohn's first film as director was ' The Good Dinosaur ' (2015), which was generally well received by critics but became Pixar's first box-office failure. He got another chance as director with ' Elemental,' a personal story inspired by his youth as the son of immigrants in New York during the 1970s and '80s. The unlikely love story of water and fire at first seemed like another box-office bomb after Pixar's first theatrically released film post-pandemic, ' Lightyear,' tanked in the summer of 2022. But 'Elemental' became a sleeper hit, picking up steam after its June 2023 release. By mid-August, it had become a certifiable smash, pulling in nearly half a billion dollars at the global box office and was nominated for an Oscar for best animation feature. The first two 'Incredibles' movies have taken in nearly $1.9 billion combined at the global box office. Voice cast members returning for 'Incredibles 3' include Craig T. Nelson, Holly Hunter, Samuel L. Jackson and Sarah Vowell. No release date has been set. Pixar's next film, ' Elio,' directed by Madeline Sharafian and Domee Shi, is set for release on June 20.

Incredibles 3 Gets New Director, Why Brad Bird Isn't Directing Revealed
Pixar's Incredibles 3 has found a new director, with Disney revealing that a new filmmaker will step behind the camera for the next entry in the iconic Disney franchise. Who is the new Incredibles 3 director? According to a report from THR, Peter Sohn — the director behind Elemental and The Good Dinosaur — will direct the third installment in the Incredibles franchise. Advertisement Brad Bird, who wrote and directed the first two films, is still on board to write the third movie. However, Bird will not be directing this film, and it seems as if his schedule is keeping him from directing the third movie. He's currently in pre-production on Ray Gunn, a movie for Skydance. Disney+ Has the Best Bundle in the Business Sign-up today for access to Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN+ Learn More Not too much is known about Incredibles 3, although the movie was officially announced last year with a new logo. The franchise originally began in 2004, with the first movie following a family of superheroes trying to hide their powers and live a normal life. Advertisement The first film was a major success for Disney and Pixar, earning over $600 million at the global box office. 14 years later, a sequel to the film was released, which dealt with the family of superheroes now trying to restore the public's trust in superheroes. That movie was also a massive hit, and made over $1.2 billion at the global box office. The Incredibles franchise has largely starred Craig T. Nelson as Robert 'Bob' Parr/Mr. Incredible, Holly Hunter as Helen Parr/Elastigirl/Mrs. Incredible, Sarah Vowell as Violet Parr, Spencer Fox and Huckleberry Milner as Dashiell 'Dash' Parr, Samuel L. Jackson as Lucius Best/Frozone, and Brad Bird as Edna 'E' Mode. I Got To See 25 Minutes Of Elio At Pixar Animation Studios, And I Am Ready To Be Emotionally Wrecked
When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. Growing up with early Pixar movies was such a treasure during my upbringing, and I'm happy to see the next generation of kids have another great era of original movies from the studio to look forward to. Although Pixar Animation Studios' biggest commercial success in recent years was definitely last year's Inside Out 2, I also like that they've also stayed true to their roots by making a host of new characters and plot lines through Elemental, Turning Red, Luca and now the upcoming release of Elio. And, after getting to see 25 minutes of Elio at the animation studio, I have hope it's going to be another solid feature for the whole family. Earlier this month, Pixar invited CinemaBlend to its campus in Emeryville, California, alongside other journalists to see twenty-five minutes of the feature and learn more about the making of the movie straight from the filmmakers. Now it's finally time to share my experience of seeing some of the film! We were shown 25 minutes of the movie in four separate sections. The first segment was the very beginning of Elio, which opens on our main character, an 11-year-old boy with the titular name who has recently lost both his parents, sitting under the table of a dining establishment at a museum. His Aunt Olga, voiced by Zoe Saldaña, is asking him what sort of space-themed lunch he'd like to eat, but he just remains under the table gripping his legs in his hands. In his self-isolation, Elio ends up wandering into a space exhibit where a projection show plays on the ceiling as he lays on the ground in awe. It's a gorgeous sequence that only features limited dialogue through the exhibit's narration about the beauty of space, but pulled me into Elio, and the emotional core it'll be exploring. Sure, a lot of Disney characters (and famous heroes in media) are orphans, but I'm interested in how this movie is exploring how escapism can be part of the grieving process. I thought to myself: "Yeah… as usual Pixar is going to emotionally wreck me." That brings me to the next segment of Elio I got to see, which is the first time the boy makes contact with aliens. As the filmmakers filled in the gaps to us about, after Elio has a near-spiritual experience at the space museum, he starts getting super into the subject, and makes every effort to his ability to be abducted by extra terrestrials. When I asked the directors what alien media they think Elio has consumed the next day during our exclusive interviews, co-director Madeline Sharafian said this: He's such an alien fanatic. I'm convinced he watched all the classics. He's definitely watched E.T. a cajillion times, Close Encounters – maybe even more so because that's the movie where spoilers, the main character gets to go to space at the end of the movie. I didn't get to see how Elio is able to meet aliens, only that he is successful in his mission and ends up at a place called the Communiverse, which is really visually beautiful, and really sold me on checking out Elio in theaters rather than with my Disney+ subscription first. What I was surprised about is how Elio isn't abducted by one species but this floating environment that is full of leaders from across the universe that come together to exchange ideas. They are looking for more interesting minds when they come across Elio, but there's one funny miscommunication in play – they think he's the leader of Earth, which he is definitely not. When I realized that Elio was going to fake being the leader of Earth in order to keep his wish to be abducted fulfilled, I only got more excited for the movie. Then in the third clip, I was introduced to a cute little alien named Glordon, who is the son of a threatening alien leader named Lord Grigon. (You've probably seen him in the trailer, but the filmmakers told me they were inspired by puppies, an axolotl and a silk worm when making the cute character sans eyes). Anyway, I watched a scene where Elio and Glordon start to become friends as they wander all over the Communiverse together. During a heartfelt conversation they have with each other, Elio admits that he feels like the only people who 'wanted' him are gone (his parents), before Glordon quips that he seems 'fine' to him. This scene really hit for me, because it helped me realize further that Elio is going to explore belonging and isolation through its hero entering a new world away from his own. This cute little kid thinks a world outside his own will make him feel more connected, but what happens when the Pixar movie explores this further? I love when the animation studio uses its gorgeous animation team to delve into deep subjects. While kids in the audience might be bopping along to its surface plotline, me and the other adults in the room are going to be emotional over the relatable feeling like no one understands you, because let's be honest, we've all felt this way before. The final section of the footage we watched seemed to be later in the film where we learn the Communiverse will make a clone of Elio at some point so Earth doesn't know he's left. I don't know how or why, but Elio ends up reuniting with Aunt Olga after getting FOMO over seeing her with his clone and missing his life on Earth. In an emotional scene, Elio thinks he hasn't been missed at all, but Olga tells him 'I missed everything about you.' It put the nail in the coffin for me. I need to see this movie, and cry all the tears. I think it's going to be a special movie that reminds us why connection is so important for us humans. I'm so curious about the gaps I missed and the "epic finale" they teased during the screening. We'll all get to see the full film when Elio hits theaters this June 20. I hope fans like me go out and support original movies like this, because the studio has announced a lot of sequels like Coco 2 after this one.

After Pixar's Incredibles 3 Confirms A Major Change, I'm Actually More Excited For The Movie
When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. I was in the audience at D23 last summer when Pixar CCO Pete Docter confirmed that Brad Bird was already at work developing Incredibles 3. There was, unsurprisingly, a lot of applause following that announcement. The Incredibles is one of Pixar's most beloved films. Incredibles 2 was the top-grossing Pixar movie ever made until Inside Out 2 dethroned it last summer. I like both Incredibles films, but I have to admit I wasn't overwhelmed with excitement that Incredibles 3 was on the way. There was no reason to believe it wouldn't be a solid film, but I just found it less interesting than doing something new or even making a sequel to a film that hadn't already received one. But now I'm a bit more curious about Incredibles 3 because it will be different from the previous films in a big way. Today, THR broke the news that while Brad Bird will write and produce Incredibles 3, he will not direct the movie, as he had done with each of the previous Incredibles franchise entries. Instead, directing duties will be handled by Peter Sohn, who most recently directed Pixar's Elemental. While it had been widely assumed that Bird would direct the movie, it had never been specifically stated by Pixar. Perhaps that had even been the plan at one point. Bird does have other projects he's directing, including Ray Gunn for Netflix. It's possible Bird just didn't have the time in his schedule. Bird and Docter reportedly jointly selected Sohn as the man who should direct the new film. But now you have my attention. My love for Elemental is well known to frequent CinemaBlend readers. I think it's the best movie Pixar has made in a long time. Pixar has always been good at turning things without consciousness into living things that we care about and cry over. But in Elemental, we saw those characters fall in love, and the movie let a single relationship carry the weight of the entire story. If Peter Sohn can do that with fire and water, then I have high hopes that he can do even more with characters that are actually human. It might be just enough of a different vibe to an Incredibles movie that it feels unique and not simply like it's another of the same movie for the third time. Fans of Brad Bird need not worry. He's still writing the film, so one assumes the final script, the plot, the dialogue, etc, will be mostly his work. It will still be Bird's story, and Sohn has been one of his long-time collaborator. Sohn began his professional career as an animator on The Iron Giant and has contributed to every film Bird has made for Pixar, including both previous Incredibles movies. If there's another person capable of bringing Brad Bird's work to life properly, it's probably Peter Sohn. The fact that a director has been slotted indicates that Incredibles 3 is probably getting ready to shift into more of a production status, though the movie is probably at least a couple of years away at least. Still, I'm looking forward to when that day comes more now than I was before.
