ITV issues huge update on popular comedy series and it will delight fans
ITV and RTÉ have announced that the third and concluding series of the critically-acclaimed comedy drama The Dry has begun production in Dublin. The beloved show, penned by BAFTA-nominee Nancy Harris and directed by film maestro Paddy Breathnach, is now shooting its ultimate chapters. Róisín Gallagher is set to return as Shiv Sheridan, a woman striving for sobriety, and this season introduces a fresh face. Following the tense finale of the second series where Shiv tried to keep her chaotic family intact and saw her former partner leave for Melbourne alone, the story twines further. In the fresh episodes, Shiv crosses paths with Daryl, a charismatic yet enigmatic Aussie, portrayed by Rick Donald, who soon becomes intensely involved with her, appearing unexpectedly in her support circle. Alongside these developments, series three welcomes back familiar faces such as Siobhán Cullen as Caroline, Adam John Richardson as Ant, veteran Ciarán Hinds as Tom, Pom Boyd as Bernie, Moe Dunford as Jack and Eoin Duffy as Rory, reports Belfast Live. A tantalizing preview suggests: "The Sheridans are about to face their biggest challenge yet; a long-held family secret that throws everyone off kilter. "The family desperately try to forge new lives amidst the betrayals of the past but destructive patterns start to emerge. Soon it's Shiv, who might not want to face some hard truths, realising there's only so long she can blame her family, the bad men in her life and even the drink: what if the real problem is just... herself?" Nancy Harris, the creator and writer of the series, expressed her delight at the audience's reception: "It has been a true joy to see audiences embrace the Sheridan family in all their dysfunctional glory and I am so grateful to have gotten to tell this story over three seasons." She also teased what to expect from the upcoming season: "The third and final season aims to go deeper than ever before, really getting under the skin of Shiv and the family in a way that we hope is both surprising, funny and (painfully) honest." Nana Hughes, ITV's Head of Scripted Comedy, shared her excitement about the show's return: "ITV are absolutely thrilled to be part of the team alongside RTÉ and Element Pictures for the third and final series of The Dry. "Nancy Harris' scripts will make you laugh and may well make you cry.... I did both just reading the scripts. Nancy's award winning writing delivers more of the chaotic mess that is the Sheridan family. I can't wait to see what Paddy and the cast will bring to the finale of this wonderful show." Kate McColgan from Screen Ireland also commented on the new season: "Screen Ireland is delighted to support Element Picture's new season of The Dry in association with ITVX and RTÉ. "Nancy Harris's work represents the very best of Irish screen writing; it is beautifully observed with a real emotional integrity and is of course very funny. We congratulate Element Pictures for bringing together such an impressive ensemble of Irish creative talent both in front of and behind the camera." Shiv returns as The Dry films final season in Dublin
Filming has begun in Dublin on the third and final series of The Dry, the award-winning Irish comedy drama created by BAFTA-nominated playwright Nancy Harris and directed by Paddy Breathnach. Produced by Element Pictures for RTÉ and ITVX, the final 8-part series will once again follow Róisín Gallagher's character Shiv Sheridan, a recovering alcoholic navigating life and sobriety within her dysfunctional family. Shiv was last seen choosing herself over a faltering romance, as her ex-boyfriend departed for Melbourne alone. Returning cast members include Siobhán Cullen as Caroline, Adam Richardson as Ant, Oscar nominee Ciarán Hinds as Tom, Pom Boyd as Bernie, Moe Dunford as Jack, and Eoin Duffy as Rory. The final chapter promises a deeper dive into the lives of the Sheridans, as a long-buried family secret surfaces and triggers a fresh wave of emotional reckoning. As the family struggles to move forward, Shiv is forced to confront the possibility that the real problem may not be alcohol, past lovers, or her family, but herself. Speaking about the final season, writer Nancy Harris said: "It has been a true joy to see audiences embrace the Sheridan family in all their dysfunctional glory. The third and final season aims to go deeper than ever before… both surprising, funny and (painfully) honest." RTÉ's Director of Acquisitions & Co-Productions, Dermot Horan, said the broadcaster was "delighted" to return to the Sheridans' world. "Nancy Harris' scripts are at times funny and at times tragic - and that is why we all feel we can relate to these memorable characters." ITV's Head of Scripted Comedy, Nana Hughes, praised the show's blend of humour and emotion, saying: "Nancy's award-winning writing delivers more of the chaotic mess that is the Sheridan family. Element Pictures claims double win at Cannes Film Festival for second year running
Dublin and London-based film company Element Pictures have won two awards for a second year running at the Cannes Film Festival. The company behind Poor Things and Normal People won awards for Akinola Davies Jr.'s feature debut, My Father's Shadow, and Harry Lighton's feature debut Pillion. Davies Jr. received the Caméra d'Or Special Mention at Saturday night's Cérémonie du Palmarès for his film - the first Nigerian film in Official Selection in the festival's history - and is the first Nigerian Director to be honoured with the award. Lighton was awarded 'Best Screenplay during last night's Un Certain Regard awards ceremony. Hippo the Dachshund, the dog who stars in Pillon, also received a special mention, winning the 'Mutt Moment' award at the Palm Dog contest. The news marks the fourth prestigious win in two years for Element Pictures, with Jesse Plemons winning Best Actor for Kinds Of Kindness and Rungano Nyoni winning 'Best Director' for On Becoming A Guinea Fowl at the 77th Cannes Film Festival in 2024. My Father's Shadow is a semi-autobiographical tale set over the course of a single day in the Nigerian capital Lagos during the 1993 Nigerian election crisis and was described as "A thrillingly vital account of the moment when everything changes" by Screen Daily review. Commenting on the award, the film's producer Rachel Dargavel said: "It's hard to express the pride I'm feeling that My Fathers Shadow has received this accolade. "It was made with so much love and energy and with an ambition to create something that resonated on an emotional level with anyone who took the time to watch it. "For it to have been received in this way is all at once so validating of the human spirit and all at once mind blowing - the first Nigerian film in official selection and the first Nigerian Director to be honoured with the Caméra d'Or Special Mention. "Thank you Cannes Film Festival and the Jury for shining a light on our beautiful film, I couldn't be more proud of Akinola." Pillion tells the story of "a timid man (Harry Melling) who is swept off his feet when an enigmatic, impossibly handsome biker (Alexander Skarsgard) takes him on as his submissive". Reacting to the Best Screenplay win, the film's producer Emma Norton notes "This is the most amazing end to a remarkable festival experience. We've all been so blown away by the reception of Pillion and this recognition for Harry's work - from the Un Certain Regard jury - is such an honour. The icing on the cake!"

Element debuts two films at Cannes to critical acclaim
Dublin and London-based production company Element Pictures premiered two directorial debuts yesterday at the Cannes Film Festival in Official Selection (Un Certain Regard) - Pillion and My Father's Shadow. Both films received strong critical praise and have been described as standout titles mid-way through the festival. Pillion, based on the novel Box Hill by Adam Mars-Jones, tells the story of a shy man, played by Harry Melling, who is drawn into a submissive relationship with a charismatic biker, played by Alexander Skarsgård. Vanity Fair called it "a disarmingly poignant drama of discovery", while The Guardian awarded it four stars, describing it as "brilliant" and "what Fifty Shades of Grey could have been". Producer Emma Norton said: "The reception to Pillion is such a testament to Harry Lighton's wonderful warmth and intellect. There was so much laughter and emotion in the room, and we're thrilled that Pillion has been embraced by the critics and Cannes audience." My Father's Shadow, the first Nigerian film ever to premiere at Cannes, is a semi-autobiographical drama set in Lagos during the 1993 Nigerian election crisis. Screen Daily described it as "a thrillingly vital account of the moment when everything changes", while Deadline called it "a moving universal story". Producer Rachel Dargavel said: "Akinoa and Wale have created a beautiful, poetic evocation of fatherhood set against political turmoil in '90s Lagos. We are also so proud to be involved with the first Nigerian film in Official Selection." Pillion is an Element Pictures production financed by BBC Film and the BFI, in association with Fremantle, Picturehouse Entertainment and September Film. It will be released by A24 in the US, Picturehouse in the UK and Ireland, and in September in Benelux. My Father's Shadow is an Element Pictures production in association with Crybaby and Fatherland Productions. It was developed and co-financed by BBC Film and the BFI. Both films will be released internationally later in 2025 and early 2026.
