Marcos on influencing Sara Duterte impeachment: I choose not to
President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. has said it is his decision not to influence the impeachment proceedings against Vice President Sara Duterte, insisting that the matter is in the hands of the Senate and the House of Representatives. Marcos made the remark in an episode of the BBM Podcast on Saturday, when he was asked about views that the President has a say in the decision of the impeachment court even with separation of powers between branches of government. "If a president chooses to do that, I choose not to," Marcos said. Duterte has brushed off Marcos' pronouncements that he was not in favor of her impeachment, as their feud continued to simmer with lawmakers pressing forward with House investigations and endorsing the impeachment complaint to the Senate. Advocacy groups, meanwhile, have called out Marcos for conveying a supposed lack of urgency to make Duterte accountable. Marcos has said the impeachment will take Congress' attention away from passing important pieces of legislation. Speaking on the podcast, Marcos reiterated that he has been preoccupied with lowering retail prices of rice and improving public transportation, among other initiatives of his administration. The Chief Executive stood pat that the impeachment process lies with the legislative branch. "That's not my, I'm busy with the transport, with the rice, all of the different things that we are doing, that, that nauubos ang oras ko doon. Put it bluntly. Wala naman akong papel doon sa impeachment eh," the President said. (That's not my, I'm busy with the transport, with the rice, all of the different things that we are doing. My time is devoted to these things. I have no role in the impeachment.) Senate President Francis "Chiz" Escudero has denied that Marcos was behind the delay in the presentation of the Articles of Impeachment to the Senate. Relations between Marcos and Duterte, running mates in Eleksyon 2022, have turned frosty following House probes into the drug war under the administration of her father, former President Rodrigo Duterte, as well as the handling of confidential funds by offices under her leadership. Last Thursday, House Secretary General Reginald Velasco said the Vice President will not be attending Marcos' fourth State of the Nation Address (SONA) on July 28. You don't put conditions to reconcile,' Marcos told the Philippine media delegation. 'When you want – if you're sincere, you want to reconcile, let's sit in front of… Ano ba talaga ang problema? Paano nangyari ito? Tanggalin natin ang problema,' he added. Marcos said having conditions is not pushing reconciliation but making demands. Asked how far he is willing to go to pursue this reconciliation, Marcos said, 'Put it this way. I don't know. I don't know what will come up. What's needed.' Marcos earlier disclosed that he is open to reconciling with the Dutertes, saying that he doesn't need enemies, but friends. Marcos also said he is open to reconciliation as he wants stability in his government. Marcos and Vice President Sara Duterte were running mates in Eleksyon 2022, with the latter being appointed as Education chief. Their relations, however, had gone sour as Duterte eventually quit from the Cabinet post. In January 2024, the Duterte patriarch, former President Rodrigo Duterte, called Marcos 'bangag,' meaning high on drugs, as well as someone who wants to be a dictator just like his late father, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. Davao City Mayor Sebastian Duterte also said Marcos should step down from his post because he lacks vision for the country. Months later, the Vice President continued her tirades against the First Family. Bong Go to Marcos: Bring FPRRD back to PH before any talks of reconciliation
Former president Rodrigo Duterte should be brought back to the Philippines first before any talks of reconciliation, reelected senator Bong Go said Wednesday. Go made the remark when asked to react about President Ferdinand 'Bongbong' Marcos Jr.'s latest statement that he is open to reconciling with the Duterte family. 'Kung gusto niyo po ng reconciliation, pabalikin niyo muna si Tatay Digong, kasi siya naman po ang dapat kausapin. Siya yung elder Duterte, siya po yung nag serbisyo sa ating mga kababayan noong nakaraang anim na taon,' Go, a close aide to the former president, said. (If he wants a reconciliation, they should bring back Tatay Digong first, because he is the one they should talk to. He is the elder Duterte, he was the one who served our countrymen in the past six years.) The lawmaker, who is a loyal ally of the Duterte family, emphasized that bringing back the former president to the Philippines will show sincerity on the part of the Marcos administration. 'I cannot speak in behalf sa pamilya, but kung meron man po, my personal position is importante rito yung sinseridad dapat sincere ka sa pag-uusap at unang hakbang diyan, pauwiin si Tatay Digong,' he said. Palace: Reconciliation shouldn't come with conditions, centered on Dutertes
Following the statement of President Ferdinand ''Bongbong'' Marcos Jr. that he is open to reconcile with the Dutertes, Malacañang stressed that the offer of reconciliation should not come with any conditions. ''Opo, ito man po ay para sa taumbayan at para sa bansa,'' Palace Press Officer Undersecretary Atty. Claire Castro said in a briefing when asked if the reconciliation should not come with conditions. (Yes, this is for the public and for our country.) Castro also said the reconciliation should not center on the Duterte family. She also pointed out that in this reconciliation, the President will not disregard the rule of law as he will always abide by it. ''Tandaan po natin, huwag po tayo magfocus sa sinasabing open for reconciliation para lamang sa mga Duterte. Maliwanag po ang sinabi ng Pangulo, sa lahat ng tao na maaaring hindi kapareho ng kanyang paniniwala o ng prinsipyo o ng polisiya,'' Castro said. (Let's remember, let's not focus on the Dutertes regarding the President's openness for reconciliation. The remarks of the President were clear, it's for everybody whom he doesn't share the same values, principles, and policies with.) President Ferdinand ''Bongbong'' Marcos Jr. said Monday that the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte is already in the hands of the Senate, adding the process should be allowed to take its course on the matter. In a podcast, Marcos was asked if he could categorically say that he is against the impeachment. '''Yung impeachment, nasa Senado na 'yan. Pabayaan natin sila, may proseso 'yan, pabayaan natin ang proseso eh ako basta't ang nasa isip ko, tapos na ang eleksyon, balik sa trabaho,'' Marcos told broadcaster Anthony Taberna, Earlier, Palace Press Officer Undersecretary Atty. Claire Castro said there had been no news about the President pursuing the impeachment trial of the Vice President. Marcos and Duterte were running mates in Eleksyon 2022 but their relationship had gone sour. Duterte was impeached by the House of Representatives on February 5, with over 200 congressmen endorsing the complaint against her. She was accused of betrayal of public trust, culpable violation of the Constitution, graft and corruption, and other high crimes. Senate President Francis "Chiz" Escudero earlier released an initial timetable for the procedures related to the impeachment trial of Duterte, setting the tentative start of the trial on July 30.
