Coastal Carolina dispatches Louisville 11-3 to advance to College World Series finals against LSU

FINAL — 11-3 Coastal Chanticleers' reliever Dominick Carbone worked around a leadoff single and walk to retire the next three Cardinals hitters in the top of the ninth. Coastal Carolina is headed back to the College World Series finals for the first time since 2016. The Chants will face LSU in a best-of-three series starting on Saturday. Advertisement CCU has won 26 games in a row and hasn't lost since a midweek loss to the College of Charleston on April 22. 8TH INNING — 11-3 Coastal Louisville went down in order again in the top of the eighth as Johnson has retired all seven batters he's faced. The Chanticleers are three outs away from the National Championship. Thorndyke picked up his fifth RBI of the day with an RBI single of Barthol, who walked to lead off the bottom of the eighth. 7TH INNING — 10-3 Coastal Johnson sat Louisville down in order in the top of the seventh. A two-out single from Caden Bodine was all she wrote in the bottom half for Coastal. 6TH INNING — 10-3 Coastal The Cardinals struck paydirt for the first time in the top of the sixth against Eikhoff after a pair of infield singles led the way for an RBI double from Tague Davis. Matthew Potok relieved Eikhoff, who left with runners on second and third and one out. Advertisement Pike added another run for Louisville on an RBI single to make it 8-2 before Neighbors made it 8-3 with an RBI single of his own. Lefty pitcher Hayden Johnson relieved Potok and stranded runners on first and third to record the third out and end the threat. In the bottom half, Coastal responded with an RBI single from Blake Barthol and a bases-loaded hit by pitch from Thorndyke to make it a 10-3 game. 5TH INNING — 8-0 Coastal Eikhoff once again escaped trouble in the top of the fifth after a leadoff single and an error put a runner on second with only one out. In the bottom half, the Chanticleers added two after Dean Mihos tripled, scoring Mitchell, who reached on a walk, and Thorndyke, who singled. 4TH INNING — 6-0 Coastal Coastal goes down in order after Louisville strands two runners in the top half of the inning, thanks in part to a pair of key strikeouts by Eikhoff. 3RD INNING — 6-0 Coastal Coastal's Blagen Pado walked with one out and moved to second on a wild pitch, and Dean Mihos reached on a two-out walk. However, CCU's scoring threat ended on Ty Dooley's ground out to second base. Advertisement In the top half of the inning, Louisville's Garrett Pike and Kamau Neighbors reached base on a single and hit-by-pitch, respectively, to start the inning, but Pike gets erased when Alex Alicea lines into an unassisted double play. Lucas Moore flied out to end the Cardinals' threat. 2ND INNING — 6-0 Coastal Eikhoff responded to the big lead by retiring the Cardinals in order in the top half of the second. Louisville reliever Jake Schweitzer settled in by retiring Coastal Carolina in order in the bottom half. 1ST INNING — 6-0 Coastal After a scoreless frame from Coastal Carolina starter Riley Eikhoff in the top of the first, the Chanticleers struck first with a bases-loaded two-out single from Walker Mitchell. CCU chased Cardinals starter Colton Hartman after the first five batters reached. Advertisement CCU followed it up with a three-run double from Colby Thorndyke and an RBI single from Ty Dooley. Preview story below. OMAHA, Neb. (WBTW) — Coastal Carolina baseball is taking on Louisville on Wednesday afternoon with the Chanticleers just one win away from the College World Series Final. The Chanticleers sit unbeaten in Omaha with a 2-0 record after knocking off Arizona 7-4 in the first round and then dispatching Oregon State 6-2 in the second round. Meanwhile, Louisville fell to Oregon State in Round 1 before winning two straight elimination games over Arizona and Oregon State to reach the semifinals. The Cardinals have had a flair for the dramatic over their past two games, scoring six runs in the eighth inning for a comeback victory over Arizona and walking off Oregon State after blowing a three-run lead in the top of the ninth. Advertisement Louisville must defeat Coastal Carolina twice to reach the championship series, while the Chanticleers only have to win once. With not having played since Sunday, the Chanticleers will have a wealth of available pitching from the group that is second in Division 1 in earned run average. The Chanticleers are turning to redshirt senior Riley Eikhoff (6-2, 2.98 ERA) on the bump. Louisville will start Colton Hartman (2-0, 9.00 ERA). * * * Caleb is a digital producer at News13.
