Valerie Mahaffey, ‘Northern Exposure' and ‘Desperate Housewives' Actress, Dead at 71
Valerie Mahaffey, the Emmy and Obie Award-winning actress known for playing eccentric characters on shows including Northern Exposure and Desperate Housewives, died on Friday. She was 71. Her husband, actor Joseph Kell, said she died in Los Angeles following a battle with cancer, Variety reports. Mahaffey's recurring television roles include portraying the conniving Alma Hodge, the ex-wife of Orson Hodge (Kyle MacLachlan) on ABC's Desperate Housewives (2006-2007); recurring teacher Victoria MacElroy on CBS' Young Sheldon (2017-2020); and Lorna Harding, Jen Harding's (Christina Applegate) self-absorbed mother-in-law in Dead to Me (2019-2022). She recently appeared in Apple TV+ series Echo 3, and played Madame Reynard in the 2020 film French Exit, starring opposite Michelle Pfeiffer and Lucas Hodges, for which she received an Independent Spirit award nomination. Born in Indonesia on June 16, 1953, Mahaffey launched her five-decade acting career onstage in New York City. She appeared on Broadway in six productions, including roles in Dracula, opposite Raul Julia in the late Seventies, and the Harold Prince-directed Play Memory in 1984. Mahaffey won two Obie Awards for her off-Broadway turns in Top Girls at Public Theatre and for Talking Heads at the Minetta Lane. She also appeared opposite Morgan Freeman in Othello and starred as Juliet in Romeo and Juliet with Tom Hulce. She played a variety of characters in scores of popular television series, including The Powers That Be, Seinfeld, Wings, ER, The Mindy Project, Glee, Hannah Montana, Cheers, Newhart, Ally McBeal, Law & Order: SVU, and CSI. Mahaffey's film credits include Jungle 2 Jungle (1997), Seabiscuit (2003), Summer Eleven (2010), Sully (2016) and No Pay, Nudity (2016). Mahaffey's publicist, Jillian Roscoe, confirmed the sad news to The Hollywood Reporter Friday. "I have lost the love of my life, and America has lost one of its endearing actresses. She will be missed," her husband Joseph Kell said in a statement to Mahaffey's other credits include Echo 3, Dead to Me, French Exit, Big Sky, Desperate Housewives, Glee and Devious Maids. The husband of the late actress Valerie Mahaffey has issued a heartbreaking statement after it was confirmed his wife died at the age of 71 following her cancer diagnosis The husband of the late Valerie Mahaffey, who died at the age of 71, has issued a statement following her death. Valerie died on Friday 30 May in Los Angeles following her battle with cancer, according to her publicist. The highly acclaimed actress was best known for her roles in Desperate Housewives and Young Sheldon. Speaking of his devastating loss, Joseph told Variety magazine: "I have lost the love of my life, and America has lost one of its most endearing actresses. She will be missed." Valerie soon became a recognised face in TV playing endearing characters and worked alongside Hollywood elite such as Michelle Pfeiffer and Tom Hanks. Since news broke of her tragic death, tributes have been flooding in on social media among her legion of fans and her daughter. One person wrote: "So Sad to hear she's passed and only 71. RIP." Another heartbroken fan penned: "Oh man, Valerie Mahaffey was always one of the most underrated and fantastic character actresses around." And another said: "She was in EVERYTHING! And no one did soft spoken, passive aggressive viciousness better!" Meanwhile her beloved daughter Alice took to Facebook and said: "I don't really have the words to say right now. Cancer sucks." She continued: "I'll look for you in all the fun moments of life. I know that's where you'll be." Adding to her glittering career over the years, Valerie recently starred in the Apple TV+ series Echo 3 which was released in 2022. Alongside her TV project she also joined the cast of the film The 8th Day, which aired earlier this year. Valerie's first TV role, which helped propel her to stardom, was in the NBC daytime soap opera The Doctors in 1979. And in 1980, Valerie was nominated for an Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in the series. But she had to wait a few more years before she was awarded the coveted gong. In 1992, Valerie took home the Emmy for her role in Northern Exposure, playing Eve. Her love of acting saw her make appearances in a host of other TV shows such as Law & Order, CSI and the comedy Frasier.
