James Gunn Says SGT. ROCK Is Still Marching Forward and Teases Secret Project Project He Feared Would Be Ripped Off — GeekTyrant

Despite reports that Sgt. Rock had been shelved, James Gunn is here to clarify that Easy Company isn't done just yet. In a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, the DC Studios co-head gave an encouraging, though cautious, update on the war-themed project, originally set to be directed by Luca Guadagnino with Colin Farrell attached to star. 'I feel like we're in a pretty good place. We're still moving forward, but it's not going to would Peter want me to say here? ... So it's still moving forward, but, yeah, right now it wasn't exactly where I wanted it to be creatively, and so it needs to change a little bit.' So while the original vision may not survive the reshuffle, Gunn makes it clear that Sgt. Rock hasn't been left for dead. That wasn't all Gunn had to say. When asked if there were other projects cooking behind the scenes, he teased something far more mysterious, something he's been keeping under wraps since the very beginning out of fear another studio (cough Marvel) might try to swipe the concept. 'My favorite thing has not been announced at all. One of the scripts people kind of know about. My script people don't know about. The other script people don't know about. 'So it's mostly stuff people don't know about.... A couple of those things [announced in January 2023] are in pretty good shape in terms of coming up, but there was one thing that I knew about from the very beginning, that when I pitched to David Zaslav what the DCU would be, I pitched to him, but we did not announce in that first meeting because I felt like it was too easy to rip off by another company. And so that's one of the main things.' That's the kind of statement that's going to fire up speculation across the fandom. A brand-new idea, so potent and original that it had to be kept hidden? Sounds like the kind of curveball that could define Gunn's DCU if it delivers. For now, we're left to wait and wonder. But between the resurrection of Sgt. Rock and the tease of a secret weapon still under wraps, Gunn's DC universe is clearly still evolving.

DC's SGT. ROCK Movie Reportedly Isn't Dead Yet, and CLAYFACE Has a Shooting Date — GeekTyrant

Things have been murky around DC Studios' Sgt. Rock project lately, but according to a new report, it might still have a pulse. And while that film's fate hangs in the balance, Clayface seems to be quietly moving forward with a fall production start. Last we heard about Sgt. Rock , DC had put the brakes the film, shelving the film after delays piled up and director Luca Guadagnino shifted over to his new film, Artificial . The World War II-set adventure was reportedly struggling with scheduling, budget concerns, and even some not-so-cooperative British weather. Add Guadagnino's lack of blockbuster experience to the mix, and things weren't looking great. DC Studios co-head James Gunn hasn't said a word publicly about the project's fate. The original goal was to release it sometime in 2025, but that's clearly off the table. Now, insider Daniel Richtman says there's still some hope. According to Richtman, Sgt. Rock is "still happening…for now," though it remains on pause until 2026. The movie was said to follow Sgt. Rock, Mademoiselle Marie, and the Easy Company as they battle Nazis to recover the Spear of Destiny. And while the concept has pulpy potential, fans remain divided, some questioning the need for a period war film in a cinematic universe still trying to establish its big-name heroes. I love the idea, though! Meanwhile, the Clayface movie appears to be further along than expected. Richtman claims cameras will start rolling in September, and the casting process is in full swing. Jack O'Connell, Tom Blythe, George MacKay, and Leo Woodall are reportedly in contention to play the shape-shifting Batman villain. Mike Flanagan, who developed the pitch and wrote the first draft of the script, previously said: "I don't know what they're doing with Clayface . I'm not directing it, and that filmmaker will need to make it their own. "I know that they're doing work on the script. I'm off doing other things now, I really hope it remains true to the spirit of what I wanted it to be. But it's not my movie, so I'll be in the audience with you, anxious to see how it comes out." Still, with Clayface gearing up for production and Sgt. Rock quietly waiting in the wings, DC Studios is clearly keeping its options open as it builds out this next chapter of the DCU.

SGT. ROCK Story and Character Details Revealed; Cillian Murphy and Mikey Madison Offered Roles — GeekTyrant

The war-torn world of Sgt. Rock was almost brought to life as a feature film, that is until DC Studios pulled the plug on the production. While the project is currently shelved, new intel from Nexus Point News offers new details on what could've been a gritty, character-driven WWII action epic from filmmaker Luca Guadagnino ( Call Me By Your Name , Bones and All ). Let's start with the casting carousel: Colin Farrell had reportedly entered talks to play the grizzled war hero Sgt. Frank Rock after both Daniel Craig and Jeremy Allen White passed on the role. Farrell's involvement was always tenuous, especially with The Batman Part II ramping up. Meanwhile, Oppenheimer star Cillian Murphy was also offered the lead, but he turned it down. On the female lead side, the role of Mademoiselle Marie, who is Rock's love interest and a fierce freedom fighter, was offered to both Mikey Madison ( Scream , Once Upon a Time in Hollywood ) and Waves breakout Taylor Russell. As for the story, 'The film would have followed Sgt. Frank Rock, Mademoiselle Marie, and the Easy Company as they fight the Nazis in a battle to recover the Spear of Destiny in World War 2.' So, that sounds like it would've been a lot of fun! Easy Company itself was stacked with the following characters: Bulldozer : The hotheaded muscle of the group, late 20s. Wildman : Rock's loyal right-hand medic with a big red beard. Jackie Johnson : Former heavyweight boxer, mid-20s. Sure Shot : A sharp-eyed Apache sniper. Bean Pole : A lanky 19-year-old grenadier and translator. Dash : An 18-year-old track star turned ammo bearer (reportedly named Philip Mason, a nod to Ice Cream Soldier). Four Eyes : A nerdy 19-year-old comic book artist—yes, really. Junior : Just 17, enlisted after lying about his age. Johnny Doe: An original creation—a soldier who notches kills on his rifle like trophies. Challengers star Mike Faist was reportedly set to play Johnny Doe, reuniting with Guadagnino. David Jonsson ( Rye Lane , Alien: Covenant ) had been eyed for Jackie Johnson, but that didn't pan out. The film would've been shot mostly outdoors on location in the UK over six weeks, but weather conditions reportedly played a role in halting progress. There's been talk of trying again in 2026, but with Guadagnino already juggling projects like American Psycho , Separate Rooms , and Lord of the Flies , that window might be closing. Some insiders have speculated that 'Guadagnino remained untested in the realm of action movies, and even though the budget was in the $70 million range, a paltry sum for comic book movies, higher-ups may have wavered in their confidence.' So will Sgt. Rock ever see the battlefield? Hard to say. It's a cool, offbeat corner of the DC Universe, one that blends war drama, supernatural elements, and classic comic grit. We'll just have to wait and see if the movie eventually gets made one day.

James Gunn's DCU Hit With First Major Setback, And It Involves Colin Farrell And Sgt. Rock

When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. Colin Farrell already has more than enough DC Comics media cred from his Golden Globe-winning performance as Oz Cobb in The Penguin, but in the last few month, we've learned he's been making moves to join the new DC Universe franchise. Back in March, it was reported that Farrell was on deck to replace Daniel Craig in Sgt. Rock. However, word's now come in that this upcoming DC movie is no longer moving forward, which arguably marks the first major setback for the James Gunn-spearheaded DCU. This update comes to us from The Wrap, which reports that Sgt. Rock is no longer set to film this summer in England. No specific reasoning was officially provided for why the shoot has been scrapped, though one insider who spoke with THR said the publication stated that it 'came down to the project's scheduling needs of shooting outdoors.' Another insider claimed that there was concern from the DC brass about director Luca Guadagnino's ability to tackle an action-heavy movie like this. Although the DC Universe certainly hasn't faced challenges since James Gunn and Peter Safran, who run DC Studios together, announced the franchise in early 2023, this is the first time one of its projects has been outright cancelled. That being said, there is a little glimmer of hope. The article mentions that Sgt. Rock would be 're-assessed' at the end of this year and potentially get back off the ground for a summer 2026 shoot. Otherwise, this version of Sgt. Rock has been set aside. Even if the 2026 shoot happens, there's no guarantee that Colin Farrell and/or Luca Guadagnino would still be able to work on it. If Sgt. Rock ends up being revived, I wouldn't be surprised if a new director and lead actor are tapped to replace them. Who knows, maybe this could be how Jeremy Allen White actually gets involved. THR's report mentioned that Sgt. Rock was early on into the casting process before the shutdown occurred. Just like in the comics. Colin Farrell's version of the title character was going to lead the combat unit Easy Company to bring the hurt to Nazis during World War II. Mike Faist, who worked with Luca Guadagnino on Challengers, was reportedly being lined up for a role. The publication's sources also said there would be a female French Resistance fighter as a major character. The good news is that even with Sgt. Rock being put on ice, there's still a way to see him and Easy Company in action in the DC Universe. The soldiers appeared in the third episode of Creature Commandos Season 1, which can be streamed with a Max subscription. As far as the wider DC Universe goes, Superman kicks off the cinematic side of the franchise on July 11, and then Peacemaker Season 2 hits the 2025 TV schedule in August.
