Indonesia invites foreign stakes in US$80bil seawall
Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto said he would form an agency to run the giant seawall project. (EPA Images pic) JAKARTA : Foreign investors are invited for Indonesia's plan to build a US$80 billion seawall hundreds of kilometres long to prevent floods along the north coast of its most populous island Java, president Prabowo Subianto said today. The seawall project expands on a 2014 plan by the capital Jakarta's government to protect the city from rising sea levels and land subsidence that have caused frequent flooding along the north Java coast. Prabowo said he would form an agency to run the giant seawall project, stretching from Banten to East Java provinces and which could take 20 years to complete. Officials have said the wall would be about 700km long. 'One of the most vital infrastructure projects, which is a mega project, that we need to do promptly is the giant seawall across the northern Java coast,' Prabowo said in a speech at an infrastructure event. '(Sea) waters have threatened the lives of our people,' he said, citing some towns in central Java. Sea levels along Indonesian coasts rose an average of 4.25mm annually from 1992 to 2024, but the rate has accelerated in recent years due to climate change, according to the country's meteorology, climatology and geophysical agency. Prabowo said he had invited investment from countries such as China and Japan, without elaborating. Experts say Jakarta is sinking due to excessive extraction of groundwater, leading the central government to plan its move to a new capital in the jungles of Borneo island.

Tenaganita renews calls for standalone legislation to protect domestic workers
An abused domestic worker from East Java was recently rescued by the Indonesian embassy, with the help of Subang Jaya police, after her written plea for help was found by a neighbour. PETALING JAYA : Migrant rights group Tenaganita has renewed calls for the introduction of standalone legislation to protect domestic workers following the rescue of an abused Indonesian woman from a house on Monday. Currently, domestic workers are excluded from key protections under the 1955 Employment Act, leaving them outside the full scope of labour standards afforded to other sectors. 'We need a standalone, comprehensive legislation for domestic workers, one that provides enforceable rights, guarantees fair working conditions, mandates accountability for employers and recruitment agencies, and recognises domestic work as real work under the law,' Tenaganita said in a statement. 'The continued absence of such legislation is a failure of our duty to uphold human dignity and to protect the vulnerable. 'Abuse, exploitation, and violence must never be the price someone pays for simply trying to earn a living.' Muliani (pseudonym), who hails from East Java, was rescued by the Indonesian embassy in Kuala Lumpur and Subang Jaya police after her written plea for help was found by a neighbour. The embassy has summoned the Malaysian agency that recruited Muliani to hold it accountable for negligence in monitoring the welfare of their workers. In 2023, Indonesian ambassador Hermono said that about 90% of the complaints received by the republic's embassy relate to abuse experienced by Indonesian domestic workers in Malaysia.

Indonesia should adopt EVs, draw lessons from failed methanol project in China, experts say
Indonesia should consider embracing electric vehicles (EVs) as an alternative to its plan to construct a costly methanol production facility, after a failed similar venture in China, according to energy finance specialists. Advertisement The ageing vehicle fleet in Southeast Asia's biggest economy may not be suitable for methanol fuel blends as the country's humid climate can cause fuel condensation, the Ohio-based Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis said in a report on Wednesday. While a methanol-blended fuel could reduce emissions and improve performance, these benefits were offset by lower energy content and higher material corrosion, it said, noting the risks flagged in a 2021 white paper by the International Council on Clean Transportation. EVs offered a more sustainable solution, the non-profit institute added. 'Expanding the use of EVs, particularly motorcycles, offers a lower-risk, less complex and cost-effective solution than blending methanol,' said Ghee Peh, the institute's Asia-based specialist, who wrote the report. 'Neighbouring countries, such as Vietnam, have already built EV charging networks.' Ghee Peh, an Asia-based energy finance specialist at the Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis. Photo: Handout Indonesia was building a US$1.2 billion coal-based methanol plant in East Java, aimed at boosting biodiesel output, with target completion in 2027, the institute said, citing a Jakarta Post report. The nation faces a 2 million tonne annual deficit in methanol output. The government has not provided details of the plant's gas source.
