Boston Blue: Everything We Know So Far About the Blue Bloods Offshoot

At least one Reagan family member's story will continue to be told when Boston Blue debuts on CBS. Ordered to series on Feb. 18 — two months after Blue Bloods ended its well-watched, 14-season run — Boston Blue finds franchise vet Donnie Wahlberg reprising his role as veteran police detective Danny Reagan. This time, however, Danny will be policing the streets of Boston, alongside a new partner. More from TVLine S.W.A.T. Vet Jay Harrington Breaks Silence on EXILES Surprise: 'I Did Not Have Spinoff on My Bingo Card' (Exclusive) Casting News: Boston Blue Adds Maggie Lawson, Lincoln Lawyer Enlists Cobie Smulders and More Survivor Turns 25: Was Jonny Fairplay's Dead Grandma Lie the Series' Most Villainous Play Ever? Vote! Who is this new partner, when will Boston Blue air, and who else will be seen on the series? Here, as they say, is everything we know so far…. Technically, no. Boston Blue since Day 1 has been described as a 'universe expansion of the long-running top drama Blue Bloods,' in part because its premise was born of an entirely unrelated project. As Deadline reported, the only Donnie Wahlberg-led Blue Bloods offshoot that had been pitched (but got passed on) would have transplanted Danny Reagan to Texas. Boston Blue showrunners Brandon Sonnier and Brandon Margolis, meanwhile, had independently developed a series that would follow a family of cops in Boston whose eldest daughter is partnered with a new transfer from LAPD. NYPD vet Danny is now that transfer. In Boston Blue, Donnie Wahlberg's Danny Reagan takes a position with the Boston PD. Once in Boston, he is paired with detective Lena Silvers, the eldest daughter of a prominent law enforcement family. Thus far, Donnie Wahlberg is the only Blue Bloods vet confirmed to appear on the spinoff universe expansion — though there surely will be mentions of the Reagan fam and friends back in New York, if not some flesh-and-blood cameos… eventually. 'Danny's story will continue the Reagan family's. You can't have Danny without Reagans,' Wahlberg said at a May press event. 'No Blue Bloods fans will be disappointed,' Wahlberg avowed, reiterating: 'We are really working on this universe in a way that I think the Blue Bloods viewers are going to be very happy.' First and foremost, Sonequa Martin-Green (Star Trek: Discovery, The Walking Dead) will star alongside Donnie Wahlberg as Detective Lena Silver, the eldest daughter of a prominent law enforcement family. Additionally, Ernie Hudson (NBC's Quantum Leap reboot) has been cast as Lena's grandfather, Reverend Peters, a renowned pastor of a historic Baptist church in Boston, while Psych vet Maggie Lawson will play Boston PD Superintendent Sarah Silver, Lena's 'strong-willed' and 'decisive' stepsister. At least two other series regulars have yet to be cast. Fact is, precious few scripted TV series have ever made camp in Boston, with Robert Urich's mid-1980s crime drama, Spenser: For Hire, being one of the exceptions. ABC' A Million Little Things (see photo above) was famously set in Boston (however devoid as it was of any accents) but filmed in Vancouver, British Columbia. Even Blue Bloods patriarch Tom Selleck's Massachusetts-based Jesse Stone TV movies were filmed in Nova Scotia. Boston Blue will film some exteriors in Boston, but production will be based out of Toronto, Ontario (that's in Canada). When CBS unveiled its fall schedule, there Boston Blue was, confirmed for a fall debut and calling Blue Bloods' old Fridays-at-10/9c time slot home. There, Boston Blue will lead out of Sheriff Country and that freshman spinoff's sire, Fire Country. CBS typically sets fall premieres dates by mid-July, and TVLine will of course keep you posted on when, exactly, Boston Blue will debut. Like its ancestor Blue Bloods, Boston Blue will air on CBS, Friday nights at 10/9c, with episodes available for streaming the next day on Paramount+. Want scoop on , or for any other TV show? S.W.A.T. Vet Weighs In on Surprise Spinoff News (‘I'd Be Lying If I Said It Didn't Sting'), Gets Support From Co-Stars

David Lim, who since Day 1 played S.W.A.T.'s Office Victor Tan, has shared his candid thoughts on how the S.W.A.T. EXILES spinoff announcement was handled earlier this month. In EXILES, which will begin filming 10 episodes this summer in Los Angeles, 'After a high-profile mission goes sideways, Daniel 'Hondo' Harrelson is pulled out of forced retirement to lead a last-chance experimental SWAT unit made up of untested, unpredictable young recruits,' reads the official logline. 'Hondo must bridge a generational divide, navigate clashing personalities, and turn a squad of outsiders into a team capable of protecting the city and saving the program that made him who he is.' (Yeah, we have thoughts on that premise, too.) More from TVLine S.W.A.T. EXILES: Can Someone Make the Spinoff's Premise Make Sense...? Shemar Moore: It's 'Bittersweet' Doing S.W.A.T. Spinoff Without OG Cast, 'But I'm the Tom Brady of S.W.A.T. It's a Fact' 'S.W.A.T. Universe Was Dead for Less Than 48 Hours': Shemar Moore and EP Celebrate EXILES Spinoff News Shemar Moore, who headlined S.W.A.T. for eight seasons as Hondo, is the only cast member confirmed to return for EXILES — though Sony Pictures TV Studios chief Katherine Pope has said, 'I think you can expect some of your favorites to be a part of it in some way.' But as Lim alludes to in his lengthy Instagram post, neither Moore nor showrunner Jason Ning acknowledged the CBS reboot's ensemble in their statements accompanying the May 18 spinoff announcement. (Moore would, days later, later name-check Lim and other co-stars in an Instagram video in which he also framed himself as 'the Tom Brady of S.W.A.T.') 'I'd be lying if I said the rollout of the new spinoff didn't sting,' Lim shared on Instagram. 'It was tough to see it announced just two days after our finale — with no mention of the cast who helped build S.W.A.T. from day one. 'After 8 incredible seasons,' he added, 'it felt like we were brushed aside when there could've been a moment of reflection and recognition — for the people who built this show, and for the impact it had on so many.' Lim led off his post by saying, 'Being a part of S.W.A.T. for the past 8 seasons has been one of the great honors of my life. I poured my heart into playing Tan — and even more than that, into the team and friendships we built on and off screen. What made S.W.A.T. special wasn't just the action, or one character. It was the squad. The bond. The camaraderie…. That effortless chemistry was there from the very first day we came together for the pilot, and it carried through all 8 seasons…. We had a magical run and went out on a high note with those final two episodes.' In closing, he said, 'I've seen the comments, the messages, the support — and it truly means a lot. I may not know what the future holds for Tan, but I couldn't be more proud of what we created together — our cast, writers, producers, crew… our SWAT family. No version of this story can take that away.' Lim's IG has thus far received supportive comments from past/present co-stars including Rochelle Aytes ('Beautifully said!!'), Annie Ilonzeh ('Very well said'), Niko Pepaj ('Love you brother') and Emily Alabi ('So much love & respect to you and the entire @swatcbs @swatwriters team'). In Moore's aforementioned Instagram video, the S.W.A.T. front man and EP acknowledged that he 'might catch some flack from the industry with what I'm about to say,' before referring to himself as 'the Tom Brady of S.W.A.T.' and saying it's up to the EXILES 'team' to 'keep on pushing with their quarterback.' After singling out a dozen castmates, Moore stressed, 'That's my family for life, OK? But just like in sports, Tom Brady might be the quarterback, but people get traded. Tight ends get traded, the running back gets traded, the receivers get traded… but the team keeps on pushing with their quarterback, and I'm that guy.' Want scoop on , or for any other TV show? 'S.W.A.T.' Spinoff 'EXILES' Will See the Return of Other 'Favorites' Besides Shemar Moore, Says Studio Exec

Sony Pictures TV President Katherine Pope teased that Shemar Moore won't be the only S.W.A.T. star to appear on the spinoff EXILES The spinoff was announced earlier this week, mere days following the series finale of S.W.A.T. after its third cancelation Moore called himself the "Tom Brady of S.W.A.T." in an Instagram post he shared hours after news of the spinoff brokeShemar Moore's Daniel "Hondo" Harrelson won't be the only S.W.A.T. star heading to the show's newly announced spinoff, S.W.A.T. EXILES. In the wake of EXILES being announced mere days following the series finale of S.W.A.T., Sony Pictures TV President Katherine Pope told Variety to expect some "favorites" from the original series to pop up on the spinoff. "For sure," Pope said, noting the shows now exist in their own "universe." "There is a clear world that we're exploring here," Pope continued. "We're still putting it all together, but for sure, I think you can expect some of your favorites to be a part of it in some way." Pope also teased more about S.W.A.T. EXILES' premise, calling it "a bit of a take on the culture generation clash of Gen X versus Gen Z." "Where Hondo is all about duty, hierarchy and chain of command, the Gen Zers are a little more like, 'I might need to take a mental health day. I want to talk about it. I want to understand it.' It's kind of our take on Top Gun Maverick." "How do we build bridges around not just generational divides, but all forms of divide? There's a lot of division going on in our world. If we just took some time to listen and to try and be part of a team, and what that really means, it would probably be better for all of us," Pope added. Pope said EXILES came together "within weeks" following CBS' cancelation of S.W.A.T. — which was technically the third time the network canceled it. EXILES' first season will feature 10 episodes and Jason Ning is serving as showrunner. He'll executive produce alongside Neal H. Mortiz, Pavun Shetty, James Scura and Moore. "My eight seasons on S.W.A.T. have been epic and memorable," Moore said in a statement about the spinoff. "We entertained the world, defied the odds, came back from the dead twice, and continued to woo fans and families worldwide." He added, "I will keep the franchise, thrill ride action, heartfelt drama, and storytelling of S.W.A.T. alive. WE DON'T LOSE!!!! ROLL SWAT!!!" Hours after news of the spinoff's broke, Moore shared an Instagram video in which he called himself the "Tom Brady of S.W.A.T." and addressed him being the only cast member announced to return, calling his former co-stars "a strong squad, a family, a team."
