Kia EV9 GT brings pace and simulated gearshift

Kia's huge EV9 can now run 0-100 in 4.6sec, thanks to the introduction of a new 500hp+ GT model. That makes it one of the fastest three-row SUVs available. Only the seven-seat SQ7 is quicker, clocking in at 4.1sec. Oh, and the AMG GLS 63 does it in 4.2sec. Creating the added urge is a 160kW motor driving the front axle and a 270kW unit at the rear. The total system output is a claimed 374kW/800Nm. Prior to its arrival, the EV9 range-topper was the GT-Line. It outputs 283kW and 700Nm, for a 0-100 time of 6.0sec. As well as an uptick in output, the EV9 GT gets the simulated gearbox (virtual gear shift or VGS) and engine sounds, borrowed from sister brand Hyundai's Ioniq 5 N. Check out our review of the Kia EV9 GT-Line here. Paddles on the steering wheel control this and it adds engagement to the electric driving experience. Kia has also made a number of tweaks to the almost 2.7 tonne GT to ensure it corners with as much pace. It now comes with electronic suspension (adaptive damping). This adjusts firmness based on the car's drive mode. An electronic limited-slip differential distributes power to the wheels with the most traction. Wider 21-inch rubber helps it stick better while bigger front brakes (with green calipers) counteract the added performance. The EV9 GT's range claim is 450km per charge, slightly down on the 505km of the other dual-motor EV9s. A recharge of its 99.8kWh battery from 10-80 per cent takes 24 minutes, says Kia. The interior is similar to that of other EV9s, except that there is a range of neon-green highlights, on the steering wheel, and GT-only sports seats. These are finished in Alcantara and artificial leather. Ambient lighting can also be switched to the matching neon green hue. The GT arrives in Q3 this year in Europe, costing a similar amount to a Volvo EX90. It will be available in either six- or seven-seat configuration. A Kia NZ representative told us; 'While there are currently no plans to introduce the GT specification into the NZ market, we're always reviewing our product lineup and considering opportunities that best suit our customers. We'll be sure to share any updates if that changes in the future.'

Prices start at £82,185 for the seven-seat version, and £83,185 for the posher six-seater. Of course, you get a whole lot of car for the money. The standard EV9 is already a monstrous thing, and the GT ups the ante even further by pairing those ginormous dimensions with a twin-motor electric powertrain producing 502bhp and 546lb ft of torque. Advertisement - Page continues below That may be slightly less than the 641bhp of the newly updated EV6 GT, but it's still enough to fling the big flagship SUV from 0-62mph in 4.6 seconds. Top speed is 136mph. The GT shares its whopping 99.8kWh battery with the rest of the EV9 range, although the distances you'll be able to cover will suffer as a result of all that power, so you're looking at 280 miles of WLTP range on a single charge. You might like Kia does refer to this as a 'grand-touring SUV' though, chiefly because the 800-volt architecture should allow you to top up from 10 to 80 per cent in just 24 minutes if you can find a 350kW rapid charger. Once back on the move, if you're trying to burn through those electrons as quickly as possible with some spirited driving you'll be pleased to know that there's a dedicated 'GT' drive mode. There's also adaptive dampers and a 'Road Preview System' that scans the road ahead and prepares the suspension for potholes and broken road surfaces. Advertisement - Page continues below The GT also gets an uprated braking system with neon green calipers behind exclusive 21in alloy wheels. Inside there are sports seats trimmed with Alcantara inserts and more neon green touches, and you get paddles behind the wheel that can control a 'Virtual Gear Shift' system a la Hyundai Ioniq 5 N and EV6 GT. Essentially this gives you a fake six-speed paddleshift gearbox, a rev counter, redline and fake engine noise to try and add in a bit of driver engagement. We like it in the 5 N. Order books are open now and cars should start arriving in the UK later this year. White paint will be standard, with five other colours available for £725 a pop. Some EVs can charge up to 80% in just 5 minutes, faster than filling a tank with fuel. Tesla models aren't the fastest but still add lots of range in 15 minutes using Superchargers. There's a choice of SUVs, hatchbacks, and performance cars with impressive driving range and 18–20 minutes charging times. One of the biggest problems with ownership is long charging times. Few people want to sit around for an hour or more to be able to drive their car. However, a global push and huge investment in EVs has forced improvements in battery technology and charging speeds. Now, many can charge up to 80% in 25 minutes or less. These ten electric cars prove that owning one doesn't need to be an inconvenience. In fact, one charges faster than filling a tank with fuel. Surprisingly, Tesla didn't make the cut this time. Despite an impressive Supercharger network and recent updates to the Model 3 and Model Y, both still take around 27 minutes. That said, a lot of range is added in 15 minutes using a Supercharger, so don't discount them entirely. In order to give you the most up-to-date and accurate information possible, the data used to compile this article was sourced from various manufacturer websites. Please note that we have ranked the following models based on charging time from 10-80%, from slowest to fastest. Where 10-80% charging times were not available, we consulted the Electric Vehicle Database. This fully-electric hypercar has 1,914 horsepower and reaches 60 mph from a standstill in an eye-watering 1.74 seconds. More impressively, it recharges to 80% in 25 minutes. If all that power wasn't enough, there's a hardcore Nevera R with over 2,107 hp and the same recharge time. We should note this time is from 0-80%, whereas the other cars on this list are from a 10% charge. So, technically, this time would be slightly shorter. The Macan Electric is the latest EV from Porsche, following the Taycan. It shares Volkswagen Group's new Premium Platform Electric (PPE) architecture with the Audi Q6 e-tron models from Audi. However, the Macan charges quicker than the Audi's, and squeezes more driving range. Every Macan Electric takes 21 minutes to charge from 10%-80% and gives 315 miles. Only the SQ6 matches this, while the other Q6 models only get 275 miles and need an extra minute. Kia has come a long way from its humble beginnings as an affordable, reliable manufacturer. While maintaining great value and excellent reliability ratings, Kia EVs now compete with top players. The EV9 is a budget Range Rover that's perfect for family road trips. The EV9 Light RWD travels up to 230 miles on a single charge, then recharges from 10%-80% in 20 minutes, allowing just enough time for a rest stop. Higher trims can go much further when plugged in for another few minutes. Lotus is a British sports car manufacturer which was bought by Geely in 2017. Since then, we've seen a focus on EVs, with the Lotus Evija hypercar, Emeya sedan, and the Eletre SUV. Thankfully, performance remains at the heart of the Eletre. Available with 603 bhp and 373 miles of range, or 905 bhp and up to 310 miles of range, this electric performance SUV charges up to 80% in 20 minutes. Another entry from the Hyundai family is the Genesis Electrified GV70. A model refresh last month treated the GV70 to a 27-inch panoramic display, AI-powered auto-terrain selection, and, most importantly, an upgraded 84 kWh battery. Now capable of up to 298 miles on a single charge, the advanced 800-volt architecture can charge from 10%-80% in 19 minutes. That's a minute slower than the previous generation, but it delivers a range boost of 15 miles. These performance-orientated EVs are as fun, if not more, than internal combustion engines — especially the Ioniq 5 N. This hot hatch behaves as it should, mimicking gear shifts and engine noises, adding to the experience. The Kia EV6 GT feels slightly different due to its longer dimensions, but it's still ridiculously fun and has a drift mode. Both share the same battery, which only takes 18 minutes to charge. Hyundai is dominating the EV market with another two fast-charging models. At first glance, the Genesis GV60 and Hyundai Ioniq 6 appear to have nothing in common, but they're built on the same dedicated platform. Although the Ioniq 6 gets considerably more range at almost 400 miles, and has low long-term maintenance costs, both charge up to 80% in 18 minutes. Similar to the Eletre, the Lotus Emeya offers outputs of 603 or 905 bhp. This four-door GT hypercar uses a smaller battery than its SUV sibling, making its official charging time 18 minutes. However, a charging index study by P3 Group recorded an incredibly fast 14 minutes under real-world conditions. Though impressive and faster than most, it's still much slower than the fastest on this list. Another premium performance duo capable of recharging their batteries in 18 minutes are the Porsche Taycan and Audi e-tron GT. It's Audi who edges ahead in terms of driving range, but the e-tron GT has fewer options and a bigger price tag. Porsche offers various body styles, outputs, and battery sizes, though only models with the 105 kWh battery achieve this charging time. While the BYD Han L isn't for sale outside of China yet, it earns the title of the fastest-charging EV, adding 1.2 miles of range every second. The new flash-charging battery works with Megawatt chargers to reach 10%-80% charge in five minutes — that's quicker than filling a tank with fuel. BYD confirmed the European expansion of the 1000v charging stations, so hopefully we'll see this revolutionary technology across the globe, making EV ownership more appealing and convenient.

Most automakers don't release monthly sales results, but Kia, a longstanding exception alongside its sister company, Hyundai, has posted promising delivery numbers for May. Last month, Kia sold 269,148 units, up 1.7% year-over-year. Outside of Korea, Kia moved 223,817 units, a 2.6% annual increase. Kia SUVs such as the Sportage, Seltos, and Sorento stood out in May, selling 48,091, 26,017, and 21,889 units, respectively, while combined sales of the K4 and K3 outside of Korea totaled 17,641 examples. One sedan, Kia's K5, has also been making a splash with a 256% year-over-year increase in May. Kia padded its sales by launching its EV3 electric SUV, which won World Car of the Year at the 2025 World Car Awards, alongside the EV4 electric sedan and the Tasman pickup. However, Kia's domestic sales experienced a 2.4% year-over-year decrease. The Sorento was the biggest hit in Korea during May, selling 7,734 units, followed by the Carnival MPV at 6,651 units and the Sportage at 5,295 units. Overall, this year held Kia's best Q1 numbers in history. In 2024, Kia sold over 780,000 units in the U.S.-the company's all-time high, Tork reports. The automaker's strong 2024 performance also marked the seventh consecutive year that it experienced retail sales growth. Increased quality, new models, and evolving brand perception are driving Kia's global sales success, but Kia's flagship all-electric model, the EV9, sold just 37 U.S. examples in May, representing a 98.3% year-over-year decline. Additionally, sales of Kia's electric EV6 have been down 40.8% in the U.S. during the first five months, nearing the EV9's 48.2% sales drop during the same period. Eric Watson, vice president of sales operations at Kia America, said that the EV9's new 2026 Nightfall Edition and the GT-Line model with a two-tone roof are among the incentives that should spur the model's sales growth. For its 4th of July event, Kia is selling the 2025 Niro EV with a 0% APR finance offer for 72 months and a $7,500 cash incentive. The brand also offers 1.9% APR for 60 months and a $500 cash bonus on select trims as part of its holiday specials. Kia has achieved success in recent years by transforming its image, with Peter Schreyer playing a central role as Chief Design Officer from 2006 to 2012 and Chief Design Officer of the Hyundai Motor Group, which oversees Kia, from 2012 to 2018. Before working at Kia, Schreyer was head of the Volkswagen Group's Potsdam, Germany, studio. In 2006, Schreyer was given the opportunity to rebuild Kia's design direction from scratch, with his modern, sleek, and balanced designs leading Kia's global annual sales increase from 1.6 million to 3 million units between 2009 and 2016, according to Autocar. One of the influential designer's key contributions to Kia was the wide tiger nose front grille with top and bottom indents in the center, something he describes as "a frontal element so strong that you wouldn't even need a Kia badge as an identifier." The Korean marque already offers the EV6 GT and EV9 GT, both topping their respective ranges with outstanding performance. While its design may have been leaked in China last year, a prototype has already been spotted on the road, thanks to Shorts Car on Instagram, signaling an imminent official debut. Kia EV5 GT Prototype Spotted on the Road Even through the camo, there are clues. The EV5 GT prototype wears a set of sporty alloy wheels that bear a strong resemblance to those on the EV6 GT. Yellow brake calipers peek through the spokes, hinting at upgraded stopping power, while a wider stance and lower ride height suggest revised suspension tuning and stickier rubber underneath. In typical GT fashion, the visual changes are purposeful, not just cosmetic. Stylistically, the EV5 GT will borrow heavily from Kia's latest EV design playbook. Think EV6 and EV9, but with added aggression unique to the GT family. Unlike the EV6, the EV5 GT will have a boxy body, closely resembling the EV9. Unlike China's EV5, the GT model is based on the global version, which means revisions aimed at broader markets. Chief among them is a redesigned center console, replacing the less conventional jump seat setup with a more premium, practical armrest. EV6 GT Sets Performance Benchmark Official details of what's under the EV5 GT's skin are still scarce, but the EV6 GT should set a benchmark at 576 hp and a 0-62 mph time of 3.5 seconds. It's unclear if the EV5 GT will have the same output, but a dual-motor, all-wheel-drive setup is almost certain at this point. Inside reports point to using an 82 kWh nickel-cobalt-manganese battery, with a projected range between 373 and 435 miles. The Kia EV5 GT will be produced in China and Korea, so it's unlikely to reach the U.S. market, at least for now.
