Paddy Pimblett reveals 'hatred' for Ilia Topuria as pair's rivalry reignites

The pair's rivalry is at risk at boiling over after Topuria - who fights for the vacant lightweight title this month - recently aimed a furious dig at the Brit Paddy Pimblett reveals he has a 'genuine hatred' for Ilia Topuria after the latter branded the Liverpudlian as a 'hypocrite.' Over the past few years, the pair have traded barbs on social media on multiple occasions. Pimblett and Topuria nearly came to blows in London back in 2022 after Topuria confronted 'The Baddy' over comments he made about his fellow Georgians. That said, the two stars shared a quick embrace during the UFC's most recent trip to London in March - much to the surprise of many. ‌ That did not last long, though, as 'El Matador' recently revealed he still dislikes the British sensation. In an interview with ESPN Deportes, Topuria said: 'He's a hypocrite. I'll tell you, I remember we shared a press conference once, and he said something like, 'I'm fighting in the main card, and you're on the prelims,' some kind of nonsense. ‌ "And now I'm thinking, I have two belts. Where are you? Who the f**k is Paddy Pimblett right now and why would he deserve to fight me right now?" Unsurprisngly, the 28-year-old's comments quickly went viral and found their way to Pimblett - who did not hold back in his response. Speaking to on behalf of All Out Fighting, he said: "I've got a genuine hatred for Topuria; I think he's a b*****. I'm not in denial, I still think he's a good fighter, but I know that I'd beat him. Why did he call me a hypocrite? Is it because I called him a little fat midget? He's about 5ft 6in and can't make featherweight. "I don't know how he can keep calling me fat. He's f****** tiny but can't even make featherweight. I make weight every time, I don't miss my weights. Call me fat all you want; I don't give a f***. I like to enjoy my life. You're only fat if you can't make your weight division anymore." Pimblett well and truly announced himself on the world stage in his last outing against Michael Chandler. The Liverpudlian dominated from start to finish - knocking out the American in the third round. Now ranked in the top ten at lightweight, a showdown between Pimblett and Topuria could finally take place sooner rather than later. Topuria is set to fight Charles Oliveira for the vacant lightweight title next weekend after Islam Makhachev vacated the belt in favour of a move up to welterweight. Sharing his thoughts on the upcoming clash in Las Vegas, Pimblett said: "I hate making fight predictions; I know better than anyone, once you're in the cage and the door shuts, anything can happen. If Ilia wins, I think he has to knock Charles out. That's Ilia's only route to victory, catching him on the chin. Charles is a bit 'chinny' these days, he's had a lot of fights and got some wear and tear on his body. "Ilia has power, but Charles has the experience. Max Holloway had a lot of wear and tear before Ilia knocked him out, so did Alexander Volkanovski, and he'd just been knocked out three or four months earlier. The fight could pan out in his favour, but I could also see Charles using his size and submitting him or getting a decision by frustrating him for a couple of rounds. It's probably a genuine 50/50 fight for me; I can't really pick a winner. I'm a fan of Charles, even though I want to fight him. I've always been a big fan of his."

Ilia Topuria opens up on weight-cut ‘suffering' as Charles Oliveira clash approaches

Ilia Topuria has opened up on the 'suffering' of his weight cuts to 145lb, explaining why he decided to move up to 155lb. In February, Topuria vacated the featherweight title after just one successful defence, eyeing a shot at the lightweight belt. He will get that shot at UFC 317 on 28 June, when he faces former champion Charles Oliveira for the vacant strap. And speaking about his decision to leave the featherweight division for lightweight, where he fought and beat Jai Herbert in 2022, the Spanish-Georgian told ESPN Deportes: 'When you're cutting weight and you can't eat or drink water, you don't care about any material things. 'They can give you bags of money, they can give you all the cars you want, you don't care at all. If they give you this little glass of water and say, 'You can drink this and it won't increase your weight,' I'll give you whatever it takes in that moment. 'I'm so low, I feel terrible. It's like sitting naked in the middle of the street. I feel terrible, so I didn't want to suffer anymore. I didn't want to go through that. 'I'd already done it throughout my career. I'd already achieved my dream, which was to become a world champion. I had to close that chapter, because I didn't want to suffer anymore. Because honestly, it's like living in the desert, and I wanted to live on the beach.' Topuria, 28, won the featherweight title with a knockout of long-reigning champion Alexander Volkanovski in February 2024. He then retained the belt with a knockout of ex-champion Max Holloway in October, preserving his unbeaten record in the process. While many fans predicted a lengthy reign for Topuria, 'El Matador' vacated the title this February. A seismic lightweight-title fight with Islam Makhachev was on the cards, but Makhachev soon emulated Topuria by vacating the 155lb gold to seek a welterweight-title shot. Later this year, Makhachev is expected to challenge Jack Della Maddalena, who dethroned Makhachev's teammate Belal Muhammad in May. 'Why did I want to fight Islam?' Topuria said. 'For one simple fact, and it's the same with Volkanovski. If you beat someone and take the title from them at 145, it had to be Volk. It had to be Volk for me at that point, because he had the most history in the division. He was the one who dominated everyone. He was the greatest. 'It's the same for me with Islam. I wanted to fight him simply because he had dominated everyone. So, who's beating everyone? Islam. Well, I want to fight him because then the prize is much bigger. '[Makhachev said:] 'I'm not going to vacate the title even if I move up to 170.' 'No, Ilia has to fight someone to earn a title shot.' Now, look: he's moved up, he vacated the title, and I'm fighting directly for the belt.' In Oliveira, Topuria will face one of the most dangerous fighters in UFC history. The Brazilian, 35, holds the records for the most submission wins and most finishes ever in the promotion. Last time out, Oliveira dominated Michael Chandler to set up a title shot and a bid at becoming a two-time lightweight champion.

Ilia Topuria sounds off on rival: 'Who the f*ck is Paddy Pimblett right now?'

Ilia Topuria sounds off on rival: 'Who the f*ck is Paddy Pimblett right now?' Ilia Topuria wants to put his rivalry with Paddy Pimblett to rest by meeting in the octagon. It's clear that the two parties don't like each other, but their paths have never aligned to meet inside the cage to exchange more than insults behind a microphone. Topuria (16-0 MMA, 8-0 UFC) recently vacated the UFC featherweight title to move up to the lightweight division, where Pimblett (23-3 MMA, 7-0 UFC) resides. Even though they will both be in the same division, a few things will likely need to happen for the promotion to feel like the fight makes sense. Topuria will challenge former champion Charles Oliveira for the vacant lightweight title at UFC 317, while Pimblett, ranked No. 8 by the promotion, is coming off a win over former title challenger Michael Chandler at UFC 314 and does not yet have another fight scheduled. Topuria recalls Pimblett comparing their careers at the UFC 282 pre-fight press conference, when they shared a pay-per-view card. Pimblett fought in the co-main event against Jared Gordon while Topuria fought in the main card opener against Bryce Mitchell. "He's a hypocrite," Topuria told ESPN Deportes in Spanish. "I'll tell you, I remember we shared a press conference once, and he said something like, 'I'm fighting in the main card, and you're on the prelims,' some kind of nonsense. And now I'm thinking, I have two belts. Where are you? Who the f*ck is Paddy Pimblett right now and why would he deserve to fight me right now?" Since sharing the stage at that press conference, Topuria captured the 145-pound title two fights later, while Pimblett has continued his steady ascent at 155 pounds. The two have continued to take shots at each other in various interviews over the years, but Topuria is now eager to just settle things once and for all when it counts. So much so that Topuria says he'd pick Pimblett if he could choose his next opponent – to not only put their rivalry to rest, but to also add another finish to his record. "Honestly, if I could choose a fight, I would fight him because I hate him," Topuria said. "He's a pain in the ass. I'd love to give that fight to the fans, because for a long time, I believe that in the UFC, you haven't seen a real fight. Two people who really want to fight each other, and what better way than to fight in front of everyone and put on a show? I know what's going to happen, and it won't be good for him."
