Newport to face Barnet in new Carabao Cup preliminary round
The competition will have a new format due to nine Premier League teams qualifying for European competition. That means that four teams must play in a preliminary round to reduce the number of clubs for rounds one and two, before the European qualifiers enter in round three. County's woeful finish to last season meant that they dropped down to 22nd in the table, the last safe spot, with Accrington Stanley above them. Had they won against Tranmere on final day then the Exiles would have gone straight into the regionalised first round, with the potential for a plum tie against Swansea, Cardiff or Bristol City. County and Accrington will be joined in the preliminary round by Barnet and Oldham, who secured returns to League Two. The decision has been made to regionalise the ties and that means the Exiles will go up against National League champions Barnet, with Tuesday, August 5 the likely date. A draw will be made on Thursday, June 26 (4.30pm) to determine whether the fixture will be at Rodney Parade or The Hive Stadium. That will be followed by a draw for the first round, with those ties taking place the following week. The Barnet fixture will be a second game under new boss David Hughes with League Two getting under way on the first weekend of August. County played the Bees in the FA Cup in December, 2023 when they drew 1-1 in Newport and then won 4-1 in north London. KEY COUNTY DATES League Two fixtures – Thursday, June 26 (midday). His contract at Craven Cottage is expiring, meaning the Parkhead side could swoop in for a nominal compensation fee for the promising teen. Rangers interested in Kwame Poku following Peterborough exit
Poku, who is a left-footed right-winger, was part of the side that defeated Birmingham at Wembley last season to retain the EFL Trophy. Having also made his debut for Ghana, Poku has been tracked by a number of English clubs for some time. However, a hamstring injury over the festive period last season prevented Peterborough from selling the player in January before the expiry of his contract. Peterborough would be entitled to a tribunal fee for the winger whom they paid Colchester United an initial £250,000 for at the age of 19. Peterborough recently confirmed that Poku would not sign a new deal with the club and move on from the London Road stadium this summer. Darragh MacAnthony, Peterborough's chairman, said: "Kwame probably won't go to the Premier League straight away, but he will get a high-end Championship club. He will be a Premier League star in the future and that next move will probably cost £30 million.'

Young Liverpool defender Amara Nallo admits he felt "homesick" during his first season at the club but is now determined to make the step up into Arne Slot's senior squad. Nallo has been progressing through the ranks at the Academy since being signed from West Ham United in September 2023. "When I came to the Academy, the players were very welcoming," he said. "The staff as well were willing to help and entrusted me and my development, which was really important. "Obviously there was no doubt in me signing because my family are Liverpool supporters as well. It just all came to plan. "In the first season I was homesick but then I got to know that I'm here for a reason and I'm working, so I need to make them proud. Of his target for the next campaign, Nallo added: "Just be regular with the first team and see what we get from there and how far I can push on from there." Speaking to Nallo also outlined why he is determined to make his mark as a centre-back. "A clean sheet for me is like scoring," he said. "It's a very good achievement. "I've always been a centre-half, even when I was playing district for my local borough. I just feel like defending is my game. I just like defending. "I'd say I'm really calm and composed and just aggressive when it comes to defending."

The 23-year-old is a one time cap for the Ghanaian national team, but that was back in 2021.
