John Cena Reveals 'Most Stupid Decision' Of His WWE Career

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. John Cena currently stands as one of wrestling's biggest names, a fact made even stronger by his seventeenth World Title win at WWE WrestleMania 41. This win came after a shocking heel turn earlier in the year, changing how many WWE fans see him. At the WWE Elimination Chamber Premium Live Event, Cena stunned WWE fans by agreeing to an alliance with The Rock. This happened after Cody Rhodes turned down The Rock's offer to join forces. Since that decision, Cena has faced loud boos in every city he visits. This current reaction from WWE fans isn't the first time they have strongly rejected the man known for "Hustle, Loyalty, and Respect." Back in 2006, John Cena battled Rob Van Dam in the hostile main event of ECW One Night Stand. Every fan in the Hammerstein Ballroom that night was vocally against him. During a recent appearance at the Philadelphia Fan Expo, Cena recalled that intense night from early in his career. He pointed to one choice he made during the match as particularly unwise. "I look at the sign and I heard the crowd and I would never do this again, it was the most stupid decision of my life, but I told Rob, 'Hey, let's go out into the audience,'" Cena shared. "I just wanted to see what would happen." "Thank you everyone in the Hammerstein Ballroom for being professional being great fans and letting me know how you feel here (points at head) and not letting me know how you feel here (gestures with a closed fist) cos I thought I was gonna get my ass kicked but everybody was real nice." Photo byCena added more about this risky move to the famously passionate audience. "That's a story I've never told and it's something I'm like 'Hey, man, let's just go out and see what the audience is all about.' What a stupid choice. I should never have done that, but everyone treated me with kindness." He announced at last year's Money In The Bank event that his final run as an active wrestler would conclude by the end of 2025, with WrestleMania 41 being a key, triumphant stop where he won his latest title. This news about his upcoming retirement surprised many in the wrestling world at the time. In a later talk, Cena explained his reasons for deciding to hang up his boots as he feels like has has lost a step. More WWE News: For more on WWE, head to Newsweek Sports.

ECW and WWE Legend Sabu Passes Away at 60: Report

Former ECW and WWE icon Sabu has reportedly passed away at the age of 60. PWInsider reported the news on Sunday. Details on the passing are sparse at this time. Sabu wrestled his final match during "WrestleMania Weekend." He defeated Joey Janela on April 18. Advertisement Before truly building his legacy, Sabu made a few appearances for WWE in 1993, but they were all dark matches. In numerous shoot interviews, Sabu has said that WWE later pitched the role of The Sultan, but he turned down the offer. The gimmick ended up going to Samoan legend Rikishi. Sabu made his ECW debut shortly after his WWE dark matches. He worked dates for NJPW and WCW before returning to "The Land of Extreme." Sabu ended up capturing the ECW World Heavyweight Championship twice. In 2006, Sabu made his return to WWE. At "ECW One Night Stand," Sabu challenged Rey Mysterio for the World Heavyweight Championship. The match was ruled a no contest when both men crashed onto a table. Advertisement Sabu's final match under the WWE banner took place on May 1, 2007. He took on Tommy Dreamer, Sandman, and Rob Van Dam to determine the No. 1 contender for the ECW World Heavyweight Championship. Van Dam won the match, and Sabu was out of WWE just 15 days later. Following his WWE departure, Sabu made several appearances on the independent circuit. He even returned to TNA Wrestling for some matches and segments. A key story in the wrestling world during "WrestleMania 41 Weekend" was the aforementioned retirement match against Janela. The match lasted just over 17 minutes, and it was a no-rope barbed wire match. Related: John Cena Closes Rivalry With Randy Orton Thanks to Cheap Shot at 'Backlash'

WWE Raw results, highlights (Mar. 17): Watch John Cena's magnetic first heel appearance

"WWE Raw" was all about one person, and that was one John Cena. The future WWE Hall of Famer appeared for the first time since his stunning heel turn at Elimination Chamber, and it felt like a scene straight out of Hollywood. 2025 is hitting differently, folks. Let's not beat around the bush. The "John Cena sucks" chants to welcome the legend at the show's start were incredible before "F*** you, Cena" chants and other variants. Belgium was blazing red hot and all in on this moment — as they should have been. This was ECW One Night Stand 2005 in a bigger building — an unreal scene. It felt bizarre. Hearing Cena angrily berate and insult a crowd was like a literal dream, especially as he hasn't changed anything about his presentation (yet?). So, what was Cena's excuse for his actions? Essentially, he's playing the victim and blaming the fans for puppetting him into the role his career became, labeling it "an abusive relationship" with every fan. That doesn't necessarily track, which is fair for an egomaniac heel character, but as I've touched on before, it's the oldest fallback in the book for heeling. I didn't love Cena's points from a justifiable or logical perspective. He started to get repetitive and go in circles. Consider it the heel training wheels, I suppose, but it wasn't long before Cody Rhodes made his entrance to save the promo. The WWE Undisputed Champion wants Cena at WrestleMania 41 — not the "whiny b****" who stood in the Belgian ring. This was about as perfect as their first post-Elimination Chamber interaction could have gone to set up the coming weeks. The atmosphere alone magnified it beyond words. Initially, it felt like Cena wouldn't change his presentation because that's what the fans want. Rhodes' prodding at Cena makes that feel possible for the next time we see Cena on screen, which will be on the next "WWE Raw" in Glasgow, Scotland. The crazy thing is, a match like this doesn't need any more build or interactions. It has enough hype as is. With Cena's new evolution, there are many more layers to explore; it's just a matter of when they get peeled back. Next week will be telling, and I feel like The Rock has to come back into this before WrestleMania. The vibe is SO different right now...#WWERaw — WWE (@WWE) March 17, 2025 Don't adjust your sets ... this is REAL LIFE.#WWERaw — WWE (@WWE) March 17, 2025 Looks like John Cena has finally EMBRACED THE HATE!#WWERaw — WWE (@WWE) March 17, 2025 NO NEW NEW GET NOTHING!#WWERaw — WWE (@WWE) March 17, 2025 *mic drop*#WWERaw — WWE (@WWE) March 17, 2025 BOOED in BRUSSELS#WWERaw — WWE (@WWE) March 17, 2025 The latest progression in the Women's World Championship picture was hilarious. It's hard to describe properly because it was so good and bad simultaneously. Iyo Sky truly has the greatest energy and is finding a more serious edge to her character as she's tired of being disrespected. This has worked in a solid, roundabout way to have her as a champion, so I'm happy to admit this whole storyline may have worked out better than I initially felt about it. Bianca Belair has also become a heel by default, regardless of her character not necessarily being one. Sky and Belair had a contract signing. I don't think there's a segment type that guarantees shenanigans more than the public contract signing. So, as she should have, Rhea Ripley emerged to cause a scene. Her character change isn't at all working, but it's not so extreme that she's completely unlikeable now. Everyone still wants to see her involved with these two, and she should be. Once Ripley arrived, the scene got so absurd. She and Belair essentially quickly repeated last week's encounter, and then Ripley powerbowed Sky onto Belair on top of the signing table. Notice I didn't say through the table. That's because it didn't break, which is always funny, but it kind of made this scene look better. The icing on the cake? Ripley just goes and picks up the contract — right in front of Raw general manager Adam Pearce — and signs it. He did nothing to stop this, and he won't despite having the authority to do so. He is the absolute worst general manager ever, and it's never not funny. CONTRACT SIGNED ... by RHEA RIPLEY?! 😲#WWERaw — WWE (@WWE) March 17, 2025 Filibuster... — WWE (@WWE) March 17, 2025 Ultimately, we have our triple-threat Women's World Championship match. Let's party. 1. As with Barcelona, the Brussels, Belgium crowd was electric from the jump, making this show feel massive. I feel like WWE needs to visit at least once every two or three months now because this is just awesome. 2. Dominick Mysterio continued to try to recruit a new member to The Judgment Day. Finn Balor wasn't pleased to find out the suggestion was Penta, who is targeting the Intercontinental title that Balor went after at the end of the night in his match against the champion, Bron Breakker. Balor appeared closer than ever to at least disbanding from the group after that interaction. WWE might be saving that for WrestleMania, but it's a plus as long as it comes by then. And with Mysterio essentially costing Balor the win against Breakker, things are looking on track. #DominikisaSnake 🐍#WWERaw — WWE (@WWE) March 17, 2025 The NUMBERS don't matter!#WWERaw — WWE (@WWE) March 17, 2025 As for a quick note on the Breakker vs. Balor match, their movesets contrast perfectly, so they unsurprisingly put on a solid match to close the show. 3. A fan had a Magikarp sign in the crowd. Pokemon in the crowd was not what I expected from Brussels, but you love to see it. 1. Penta won his "No Holds Barred" match against Ludwig Kaiser. These guys are always fun together, but Kaiser looked pretty pathetic in this one, as he verbally quit before Penta finished him with a Mexican Destroyer and Penta Driver. They also didn't really need a stipulation because all they used were chairs. So, it was kind of like wrestling clickbait to advertise that for this "WWE Raw." Ultimately, Penta now wants the Intercontinental title, and I'm here for that all day. NO HOLDS BARRED in BELGIUM!#WWERaw — WWE (@WWE) March 17, 2025 THIS IS AWE-SOME! 👏👏 👏👏👏#WWERaw — WWE (@WWE) March 17, 2025 2. The mystery Alpha Academy luchador saga continued after LWO's Rey Mysterio and Dragon Lee defeated Alpha Academy's Creed Brothers. Is it Chad Gable? Is it not Chad Gable? It obviously is, but whether or not there's an impending story swerve, I don't know or really care. It's become a fun little filler story, but I can't see it going anywhere, which is unfortunate because of how great of a wrestler Gable is. #WWERaw GM @ScrapDaddyAP should sign that new luchador before @RealNickAldis can! 👀 — WWE (@WWE) March 17, 2025 1. Jey Uso squashed Austin Theory in seconds at most, then botched a dive over the ropes that looked extremely painful on his lower back. Week by week, we're further reminded how the 2025 Royal Rumble match was wasted. Can you guess what happened next? Yep. Gunther attacked him — because that's all this rivalry is. Le gros botch de Jey Uso après le n'est pas le moment de te blesser Jey.. #WWERaw — TOTAL CATCH ( WWE ) (@Total_CatchYT) March 17, 2025 Seth Rollins was monstrously over in Brussels. He received the biggest standalone reactions pretty comfortably. This isn't the first time Rollins has won our Uncrowned Gem of the Night, but tonight was a further display of what a unique character he's becoming. He's a babyface with somewhat of a heel personality, at least with some of his motives and trying to take out fellow good guys. Yet, he remains cheered for it. That's a sign you're doing something very right. Rollins left the ring after he told us that Roman Reigns and CM Punk would be on "WWE SmackDown" this Friday and invited himself to the festivities. Get the popcorn ready. SING BRUSSELS SING 🇧🇪#WWERaw — WWE (@WWE) March 17, 2025 ROLLINS ➡️ 🇮🇹This Friday on #SmackDown!🎟️ — WWE (@WWE) March 17, 2025 👑 I'll repeat it: these European crowds put the U.S. to shame. It's been magic so far. Crown score: 8/10 👑
