ECI has taken 23 initiatives to strengthen electoral system, says its Deputy Director

Election Commission of India (ECI) Deputy Director (Media Division) P. Pavan said the ECI took 23 initiatives aimed at strengthening the electoral system, with a focus on improving facilities to voters, political parties, and election staff, between February 19 and June 10, 2025. They also included some procedural reforms, legal measures and innovations, he said, while stressing the significant role played by the media in increasing voter turnout in elections. Interacting with media persons at the Secretariat on Friday (June 20, 2025), Mr. Pavan said voter information slips were being made more useful now by prominently displaying voter serial numbers and part numbers, and data related to deaths was being collected from the Registrar General of India database, and necessary changes were being done in the electoral rolls after due verification. The ECI mandated that each polling station should have a maximum of 1,200 voters, and facilities like additional polling booths in apartments/colonies were being provided. Regarding political parties, Mr. Pavan said the campaign boundary had been reduced to 100 metres from the entrances of polling stations, and noted that 4,719 meetings were held across the country at the CEO/DEO/ERO levels with various political parties involving over 28,000 party representatives. Training programmes for booth-level agents were being conducted at the India International Institute of Democracy and Election Management (IIIDEM). The procedural reforms included digitisation of Voter Trend Reports, index cards and statistical reports to ensure faster dissemination of election data. A new integrated dashboard called ECINET had been launched replacing more than 40 apps / websites with a single platform for all services. The introduction of a unique EPIC number had resolved the issue of duplicate voter IDs. Standard photo ID cards were being issued to booth-level officers. Through the offices of Chief Electoral Officers of States, special training programmes were being conducted at the IIIDEM for media / communication officers from 36 States / UTs, Mr. Pavan added.

T'puram: The office of the chief electoral officer stated that the voting percentage displayed in the Voter Turnout App is not final for the Nilambur bypoll. The chief electoral officer clarified that the voter turnout percentage shown in the application represents approximate voting trends in percentage terms only. These figures are indicative in nature and should not be interpreted as exact or certified data. "The voter turnout information is provided solely for facilitation and informational purposes to give the public a general sense of voting activity during the election process," a press release stated. Additionally, the displayed voter turnout information does not include data from postal ballot voting, which is compiled separately and added to the final official count, according to the statement. "Users are advised to refer to the official announcements and statutory documents issued by the respective returning officers for any legal, electoral or official purposes," the press release said. The voting process was peaceful and at the end of the polling, the electronic voting machines were transferred to the strong room and sealed in the presence of the candidates or their representatives. The strong room, where the voting machines are stored, will be under double-layer security by the Central armed police force and the state armed police force. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Beat the Rush: The $42 Serum Costco Shoppers Swear By Best Of Beauty Learn More Undo The EC successfully used new facilities at the Nilambur bypoll, including mobile phone storage facilities at the polling booth, the updated voter turnout rate (VTR) sharing process and 100% webcasting of polling stations. Jubilee Hills by-election unlikely soon, says CEO

Hyderabad: The Chief Electoral Officer (CEO), C Sudharshan Reddy, clarified on Tuesday that a by-election for the Jubilee Hills Assembly constituency may not take place for some time, with a notification deemed unlikely within the next one or two months. Speaking to media representatives at his office in BRKR Bhavan, Reddy stated that while the Election Commission of India (ECI) has already issued notifications for by-elections in several vacant assembly constituencies across the country, Jubilee Hills is not currently on that list. He explained that following the receipt of a Gazette notification from the Assembly, informing them of the sitting MLA Maganti Gopinath's death, the information was promptly forwarded to the ECI. "It is up to the ECI to make a decision on conducting a by-election. By-elections have been announced in three to four other states. However, we may not have a by-election at this juncture," said Sudharshan Reddy. The CEO further announced that the ECI has launched 21 new initiatives aimed at strengthening the electoral process and enhancing voter facilitation. These include measures such as reducing the maximum number of voters per polling station from 1,500 to 1,200 for a smoother voting experience, and increasing the number of polling stations, particularly in densely populated residential areas like high rises and gated communities. To improve accessibility, polling stations are now to be located within two kilometres of voters' residences. New conveniences include mobile phone deposit facilities outside polling stations for voter convenience, and a reduced campaign booth distance from polling stations from 200 metres to 100 metres. Among the technological advancements, the ECI has launched ECINET, a unified digital platform integrating over 40 ECI applications and websites. Voter roll integrity will be enhanced through integration with the Registrar General's death records to promptly remove deceased voters. A nationwide duplicate EPIC (Voter ID) resolution initiative is also underway to ensure unique voter identification.
