70% degree seats remain unfilled after 2nd phase DOST counselling
Hyderabad: Not even 30% of the 3.71 lakh degree seats in the state have been filled after the second phase of Degree Online Services, Telangana (DOST). According to the details released by the Telangana Council of Higher Education (TGCHE) on Friday, 43,568 students were allotted seats in the second phase of counselling. Of these, 6,077 had got seats in the first phase but participated again in the counselling to secure a seat in a better college. In the first phase, 60,436 students were allotted seats. "There is hardly any demand for degree courses. Maybe, if DOST counselling was held after EAPCET and after release of Intermediate supplementary results, a few more seats would be filled," said Y Ramakrishna, secretary, Telangana Degree College Managements Association. He said that there were way too many seats in undergraduate courses in degree colleges across the state. He also advocated stringent eligibility criteria for professional courses such as engineering to ensure students don't opt for them as the default choice irrespective of their capability to study. Also, while there are 3.71 lakh degree seats, only 2.85 lakh students cleared Intermediate this year, with most going for professional courses. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 2025 Top Trending Local Enterprise Accounting Software [Click Here] Accounting ERP Click Here Undo Despite poor demand, colleges do not apply for course closure or reduction of seats as they will have to seek approvals again if they want to offer certain courses in the future. In Telangana, there are 805 degree colleges under DOST which offer 457 courses. TGCHE officials said they would be opening up degree courses to non-local students after the third phase of counselling. "We went ahead with DOST counselling as there are students who want to join only degree courses. We did not want to keep them waiting. If needed, we will have special phase counselling for supplementary students and those waiting for EAPCET," said V Balakista Reddy, DOST convenor and chairman, TGCHE. He said they were trying to reform degree education by updating the syllabus and introducing skill-based courses, but it would take a few years to see the results. Professional colleges plan to boycott counselling over pending fee reimbursement dues
1 2 3 Hyderabad: With fee reimbursement dues reaching Rs 7,500 crore, all professional college managements are considering boycotting the counselling for various Common Entrance Tests (CETs), including the EAPCET, ICET and LAWCET, and refusing to accept any 'zero fee' admissions for the 2025-26 academic year. The managements of professional colleges have formed a new association, the Federation of Associations of Telangana Higher Education Institutions (FATHI), to advocate for their cause, demanding that the state clear the dues by Aug 15. The federation includes management from engineering, pharmacy, law, nursing, MBA, MCA and BEd colleges. "All professional colleges are on the verge of closure. We have not received any fee reimbursement in the last three years. If the state does not clear our dues immediately, we won't be able to survive. This is why we have decided not to accept any 'zero fee' admissions and to boycott counselling," said G Nagaiah, general secretary of FATHI. He added that the outstanding fees would total Rs 10,000 crore by next March. According to its members, the association is even considering legal action to recover the dues. "In a class of 60, at least 20 students will be from SC, ST and minority communities. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 임플란트, 지금 시작하세요 [자세히 보기] 임플란트 더 알아보기 Undo They are all eligible for full reimbursement. The Centre released SC/ST and minority funds over the last three years, but we have not received even that amount. Is this not the diversion of funds?" asked K Ramadas from the pharmacy colleges' management association, who is also part of the federation. They stated that, even if the govt allocates seats to students who are eligible for full fee reimbursement, they will not accept their admission unless a student is willing to pay at least 50% of the annual fees before joining the course. Meanwhile, officials from the Telangana Council of Higher Education said that they had tried their best to resolve the issue over the last six months or so. "We tried through different forums. We even recommended that the state clear dues in phases. But nothing has been released to cover fee arrears to date. Now, it is up to the govt to decide, as we too are helpless," the official added.

Make Inter marks basis of undergrad admission to end coaching madness: TEC
1 2 Hyderabad: To counter commercialisation of education, the Telangana Education Commission (TEC) on Wednesday recommended that the state reconsider the need for competitive exams such as EAPCET for undergraduate admissions into engineering, pharmacy and agriculture courses. The TEC, which conducted a public hearing on Intermediate education, suggested that Intermediate marks be made the basis for admissions instead. "To reduce the craze for coaching and to end the commercialisation of education, the Intermediate exam should be strengthened further and made the basis for admissions. This model is working quite well in states such as Tamil Nadu," said PL Vishweshwar Rao, member, TEC. The commission, along with other stakeholders, also suggested strengthening public junior colleges with semi-residential models, English medium, nutritious meals, and career counselling. They also stressed on appointment of officers in mandals for monitoring and coordination, enforcing fee regulation, curbing misleading advertisements and unauthorised colleges, and reviving interest in arts and humanities to align Intermediate education with career pathways and higher education goals. At the hearing, various issues were highlighted including lack of transportation, infrastructure gaps, lack of teachers, health and safety, mobile addiction, dropouts due to distance and poverty among others. "One student aspiring to be a civil servant said that she had to drop out as there was no govt junior college nearby. We asked her if she would be interested in studying in a welfare residential school and even convinced her family to enrol her in a gurukul school," said commission chairman Akunuri Murali. Several students also shared stories of financial hardship, loss of parents and lack of access to affordable education even after scoring well in Class 10.

TGCHE calls for mandatory registration of coaching, tutorial centres
Hyderabad: With many institutions operating without proper permissions, chairman of the Telangana Council of Higher Education (TGCHE) V Balakista Reddy said that the govt should make it mandatory for coaching centres, tutorial centres, and institutions functioning as branches of deemed-to-be universities to register. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Speaking at a press meet at the TGCHE office on Tuesday, Reddy said they recently issued notices to four edtech companies for offering courses without obtaining the required approvals. "These institutes have been found offering courses without AICTE approval or being affiliated with any university. These are not job-oriented courses, yet they are being offered courses in the name of some private universities," said Reddy. He added that mandatory registration is necessary to keep a tab on such institutes. He also said that the council wrote to the govt on management quota seats in engineering colleges, following several complaints on the matter. "Since it is a policy decision, we wrote to the govt on what needs to be done. We want to know whether we can go for online or offline counselling to fill management seats as well," he added. On the issue of fee fixation in technical colleges, the chairman of TGCHE also said that the fee regulatory commission is working on it and very soon, the revised fee for private colleges will be announced. He also stated that counselling for EAPCET will commence on July 1, and the state will adhere to AICTE guidelines and complete the process by August 14. Regarding degree admissions, he said that seats for non-locals will be made available in spot admissions after the completion of DOST admissions.
