Summer creates the ‘perfect storm' for this painful issue — especially if you hit the beach
Summer is here — and according to one OBGYN, there's more to fear. If you're part of the half of the population with a vagina, the hottest months of the year create a much higher risk for a very common — but extremely uncomfortable — issue. Fortunately, Dr. Carly Ross broke down some easy steps that can help you prevent a flare-up. Advertisement 3 Ross called summer the 'perfect storm' for UTIs. Alvov – 'Summer activities create the perfect storm for urinary tract infection (UTI) development,' Ross, a Winx Health Advisor, told The Post, 'The combination of heat, humidity, and dehydration weakens your immune system, making it harder to fight off infections.' UTIs begin when bacteria enter the urethra and multiply, infecting the urinary tract. UTIs develop due to genetic disposition, sexual activity, hormonal imbalances, medical conditions, compromised immunity, or poor hygiene. 'E. coli, which typically lives harmlessly in your intestinal tract, can become problematic if it reaches your urinary tract, a journey made easier by summer activities,' said Ross. Advertisement A 2023 study estimated that meat contaminated with E. coli causes around half a million UTIs in the US each year. UTIs are 30 times more common in female populations due to urethra length and anal proximity. Symptoms of a UTI include the urgent need to urinate, a burning sensation when peeing, pressure or pain in the lower abdomen or pelvic region, cloudy or blood-tinged urine, and urine with a strong odor. Getty Images How to prevent UTIs this summer According to Ross, certain preventative measures can save you from the ultimate summer bummer. 'Incorporate daily habits like drinking water to flush out bacteria, as well as maintaining urinary hygiene by wiping from front to back after using the bathroom,' said Ross. Advertisement Holding your pee is another common culprit of UTIS. Studies have shown that holding it for too long can cause the bacteria responsible for the infection to multiply — so if you need to go, let it flow! She also recommends limiting caffeine and alcohol, as both can irritate the bladder. A common summer sin is lounging around in a wet bathing suit, a habit Ross says can wreak havoc on your health. 'Spending extended periods in wet bathing suits creates the perfect breeding ground for bacteria. Opt for clean, breathable cotton underwear and change promptly after swimming or excessive sweating.' While some experts maintain that going commando, especially at night, is primo for vaginal health, if you must opt for underwear, Ross urges women to go for a clean, 100% cotton pair to prevent bacterial growth and keep moisture levels balanced. 3 A common summer sin is lounging around in a wet bathing suit, a habit Ross says can wreak havoc on your health. New Africa – Because sexual activity increases UTI risk, Ross recommends urinating as soon as possible after intercourse to 'flush out any bacteria that may have entered the urinary tract.' What to do if you have a UTI Advertisement While there are myriad treatment options for a UTI, Ross warned that many mask symptoms but fail to address the infection. 'Cranberry supplements and juice help ease the pain, but ultimately, UTIs need a proper diagnosis and Rx treatment to eliminate the infection. There are now at-home tests with clear digital results that can connect you directly with a doctor for immediate prescription to a local pharmacy. If the pattern continues, you should see a medical professional in person.' UTIs are among the most common infections worldwide, affecting 50% to 60% of women at some point in their lives, and they seem to be becoming more prevalent. The disease burden rose by more than 68% between 1990 and 2019, recent research found. Advertisement Antibiotics are the primary cure for UTIs as they eliminate the bacteria that cause the infection. Unfortunately, studies indicate that the bacteria that cause UTIs are becoming more resistant to antibiotics, making these infections more dangerous than ever. Part of this resistance can be attributed to meat consumption, as animals treated with antibiotics can develop resistance to those drugs that's transferred to humans. Contaminated water behind diarrhoea, cholera outbreaks in Odisha
BHUBANESWAR: The Central health team visiting Odisha has confirmed that contaminated water is the primary cause of recent diarrhoea and cholera outbreaks in the state. The team shared its findings during a review meeting with state officials here on Wednesday. With three more deaths including two in Jajpur and one in Balasore in last 24 hours, the outbreaks have claimed 24 lives and affected over 2,500 people across nine districts. The health authorities, however, put the official death toll at 11. Following a detailed assessment at the affected areas, the visiting 10-member health team and four-member food safety panel concluded that the cholera outbreak in Jajpur district stemmed mainly from consumption of contaminated water and food. Water samples collected from various areas tested positive for E. coli contamination, indicating widespread microbial pollution in the district. At least 10 water samples collected in the first phase were found to be E. Coli positive. Similarly, 16 out of 37 faecal samples tested positive for Vibrio cholerae. The district continues to see new cases, with 37 fresh admissions reported on the day. However, signs of improvement are emerging, as the infection rate has dropped and only 196 people are currently under treatment. The Central team held separate discussions with the officials of Health, PR&DW and H&UD departments and advised them to take immediate steps to ensure availability of safe drinking water in the affected districts. Chief secretary Manoj Ahuja reviewed the situation and asked officials to ensure purification of drinking water distribution points in several districts. Health secretary Aswathy S who reviewed the situation, said a doctor has been suspended for advising a senior citizen to purchase medicine from outside, despite its availability at hospital pharmacy free of cost. The Health department has formed special teams that will visit Cuttack, Jajpur, and Bhadrak districts on Thursday. The rapid action teams deployed in the affected districts have been instructed to take action as per the recommendations of the Central team.

UK households urged to mix 35p kitchen staple with soap to banish flies
If you're being plagued by flies this summer, no need to pull out the fly swatter just yet - household experts have shared a cheap and nifty trick to keep them far away from your home It can be incredibly frustrating to find your home and garden inundated with flies as the warm weather picks up – luckily this expert tip will send them packing. Flies tend to reproduce at a higher rate over summer due to the warmer temperatures, which means you can quickly end up with a massive infestation if you're not careful. This is particularly frustrating if you're growing fruit or vegetables in your garden, or if you plan on leaving food items, like fruit bowls, out on the kitchen counter. Flies are drawn to decaying matter and will feed on your leftovers and garden plants. Worse than creating an annoying noise, these airborne pests are also known to spread disease. This includes E. Coli, which is a bacterial infection that can cause diarrhoea, stomach cramps and nausea. READ MORE: Monty Don urges gardeners to do urgent weeding task in June Fortunately, you don't have to whip out the fly swatter, or turn to a nasty pesticide to get rid of them. According to experts there's a great way to repel flies using household ingredients. All you need is a bottle of vinegar and dish soap. Healthline writes: 'A mixture of vinegar and dish soap can help you trap flies such as fruit flies.' First, you should mix equal parts water and vinegar in a glass. After you've done that, add a few drops of dish soap into the glass. Next, cover the glass with plastic wrap, and make sure that you secure the plastic wrap with a rubber band. Finally, you should poke some small holes in the top. Healthline continues: 'Flies will be attracted to the vinegar in the glass and will fly through the holes. However, the dish soap causes the flies to sink instead of being able to land on the vinegar.' Flies are attracted to vinegar due to its strong, fermented scent, which somewhat resembles the aroma of overripe or decaying fruit. It also contains acetic acid, which is a chemical that builds up during fruit fermentation. These tiny insects like to feed on the microbes that live on overripe or decaying fruit and so are drawn to this acid by their sense of smell. Hence why the vinegar makes such an effective lure. You probably have a bottle of vinegar lying around in your kitchen cupboard – but if not, don't worry. You can pick up 568 ml of Distilled Malt Vinegar from Sainsbury's for just 35p. If you're not a fan of the smell of vinegar in your home, another tip that might work is leaving out cucumber. It sounds strange, but it's believed that flies are actually repelled by cucumber due to its smell. Simply place cucumber slices next to entry points in your home, like doors and windows. Equally you should place them in other areas where flies like to congregate, including bins.

Worcester city officials warn of elevated E. Coli levels after wastewater overflows into storm drain
Worcester City Officials are warning the public of an elevated risk of E. Coli levels after wastewater was discharged onto the streets. Officials say that on Friday morning, around 11:07 AM, the city encountered a sewage overflow in the area of 65 Lake Avenue. Around 470 gallons of untreated wastewater was discharged from an underground pipe and onto the street. An immediate response from city crews was able to stop the leakage around 12:41 PM and ensure that the sewer system was operating normally. However, during the wastewater leak, some of it had made its way into some of the storm drains, which ultimately drains to Lake Quinsigamond. The city is now advising the public of a possible elevation to E. Coli levels near the areas of the discharge. Officials say that they will be conducting daily testing until levels return to normal ranges. This is a developing story. Check back for updates as more information becomes available.
