Dodgers' Roberts ejected after Ohtani hit by pitch

Dodgers' Roberts ejected after Ohtani hit by pitch originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Tension remains high between the Los Angeles Dodgers and the San Diego Padres. These National League West foes have had three postseason run-ins since 2020, igniting the rivalry to unparalleled heights. Advertisement It all started on Monday night, when Dodgers center fielder Andy Pages was drilled by Padres starting pitcher Dylan Cease. Pages took exception to Cease's actions, to which Manny Machado responded: 'They got way more superstars over there if we want to hit somebody. They've got some big dogs over there we could hit…. Rooting for him, but it's just part of the game.' Those big dogs were targeted during Tuesday's matchup. In the top of the third inning, Los Angeles reliever Lou Trivino rode a sinker high and inside on Fernando Tatis Jr. Trivino's reaction did not appear to indicate this was intentional, but the timing was certainly convenient. Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts (30) argues with umpire Marvin Hudson (51) during the third inning against the San Diego Padres at Dodger A. Vasquez-Imagn Images Then, in the bottom half of the inning, San Diego returned the favor when pitcher Randy Vásquez hit Shohei Ohtani with a fastball on the upper leg. The biggest dog of them all, perhaps this is what Machado was hoping for. Advertisement Dodgers manager Dave Roberts hopped out of the dugout, rightfully upset with his injury-riddled superstar, the latest casualty in this war, and was ejected for arguing with the umpires. Relatively peaceful baseball lasted for about four innings. Until, in the top of the seventh, the Dodgers' Matt Sauer plunked Jose Iglesias in the forearm. It drew an emotional reaction from Machado, who exited to the Padres' dugout to bark at the umpires. The benches and bullpen have not fully cleared out for a scuffle, yet, but that feels inevitable the way these games and this rivalry have gone lately. The teams still have two more meetings this week and expect fireworks in each of them. Andy Pages, Dylan Cease Exchange Barbs After Dodgers-Padres Game

Andy Pages, Dylan Cease Exchange Barbs After Dodgers-Padres Game originally appeared on Athlon Sports. It's pretty safe to say Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Andy Pages was not a fan of a pitch thrown at him by San Diego Padres pitcher Dylan Cease in the two teams' clash on Monday night. Advertisement With the Dodgers ahead 3-2 in the bottom of the fourth inning, Cease threw an 0-1 offering towards Pages that went far inside, making contact with the upper part of Pages' arm. The play prompted a staredown and choice words from Pages, though the umpiring crew proactively prevented a confrontation from taking place. The Dodgers ended up having the last laugh, as they kicked off their four-game tilt against the Padres with a 6-3 victory that featured Shohei Ohtani's first pitching appearance since 2023. After the game, though, Pages expressed frustration about his incident with Cease, claiming the right-hander intentionally hit him with the pitch. "I probably shouldn't have reacted like that, but he doesn't miss with a slider on the corner, yet he can miss with a fastball?" Pages told reporters in Spanish. Advertisement Pages did express regret for his actions, going on to say he did not "feel like my reaction was right" and that "adrenaline took over for me in that moment,' per ESPN's Alden Gonzalez. Cease was quick to respond, claiming there was no intent behind the pitch and expressing shock at Pages' immediate reaction. "I didn't understand it," Cease said, via AJ Cassavell. "It's not going to deter me from throwing inside. I don't know if I've ever hit a Dodger before. It just happens. It's part of the game." Los Angeles Dodgers right fielder Andy Pages celebrates after hitting a three-run home run at Dodger Kamin-Oncea-Imagn Images Padres third baseman Manny Machado also added his two cents to the situation. "They got way more superstars over there if we want to hit somebody. They've got some big dogs over there we could hit," Machado said, also via Cassavell. "This game is crazy, right? This rivalry, it's back and forth. Playing this competition, things get heated. You want to go out there and compete. He's having a helluva year. He's going to continue having a helluva year. [I'm] rooting for him, but it's just part of the game." Advertisement The two Southern Californian clubs have had many heated moments like this in recent seasons, and as they battle for supremacy atop the NL West, more could be in store as the series – and the season as a whole – goes along.
