Vatika Chowk elevated road set to mirror Dwarka Expressway
Gurgaon: GMDA is considering a plan to build a Dwarka Expressway-inspired elevated corridor on the Southern Peripheral Road, which – if approved – will facilitate a signal-free ride between the capital and the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway without having to navigate city traffic.
Officials told TOI on Monday that the authority hired a consultant this year to prepare a detailed project report to renovate SPR between Vatika Chowk and NH-8. The consultant submitted its design for this 5.5km stretch.
"Detailed deliberation is currently going on, and we are also factoring in infrastructure proposed to be built along the stretch. The corridor will be designed not just for today's needs, but for the mobility requirements of the future.
While we are in the process of finalising the design, the detailed project report is currently being prepared," a senior GMDA official said.
According to the proposal, the elevated corridor will be a six-lane carriageway with no traffic signals, and ramps for entries and exits.
It will be linked with the
Dwarka Expressway
and NH-8 through the existing cloverleaf intersection and will connect to the Sohna highway (which is part of the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway, NH-248A) at Vatika Chowk.

In effect, this design will allow uninterrupted traffic flow from Shiv Murti in Delhi to NH-8, and onwards to NH-248A. Vice-versa, any commuter on the Sohna highway can reach Delhi without any hassle.
Conceived in 2019, the plan to redevelop this SPR stretch has been pending for years.
In 2022, administrative approval was given for construction of eight flyovers and widening of SPR to six lanes, but this proposal was scrapped after questions were raised about low traffic density on the stretch.
A year later, then chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar directed GMDA to modify the design and explore the possibility of a direct elevated road to connect NH-248A with NH-8 and Dwarka Expressway. CM Nayab Singh Saini in July 2024 gave the green light for the elevated corridor.
GMDA's board has sanctioned Rs 750 crore for the project, of which Rs 620 crore is for construction and Rs 130 crore for land acquisition.
Residents said on Monday that SPR needs to be redeveloped.
"Traffic volume on SPR has gone up over the past few years, and during peak hours, vehicles come to a crawl. Any effort for road repairs will not have a lasting impact as new projects are coming rapidly, and traffic volume will only grow. A redevelopment project is needed," said Rohit Malik, who lives in Sector 69.
