Woman charged, suspect sought in Pickering fire police now deem homicide
A woman has been charged and another suspect is being sought in relation to a fatal Pickering house fire that police are now deeming a homicide. Around 2:20 p.m. on June 11, police responded to a house fire in the area of Primrose Court and Fairport Road, according to a Thursday release from Durham police. A 69-year-old woman was located dead inside the residence. Following a post-mortem, Durham police's homicide unit took over the investigation. Police now say the death was the Durham region's third homicide of 2025. On Tuesday, a 34-year-old Pickering woman was arrested and charged with accessory after the fact to murder, police say. She was held for a bail hearing. Police say they have identified another suspect, who remains outstanding, in the ongoing investigation. Investigators say they believe the incident was isolated and there is no threat to public safety. Anyone with more information is asked to contact police or leave an anonymous tip with Crime Stoppers.

Woman facing murder charge in connection with fatal Pickering fire, 1 suspect outstanding: police
A homicide investigation is undeway after a 69-year-old woman was found inside a home that caught fire on Primrose Court in Pickering. (Craig Barry/CTV News Toronto) The investigation into a fire that killed a senior in Pickering over the weekend is now a homicide, Durham police say. On June 11, a fire broke out at a home on Primrose Court near Fairport Road, north of Finch Avenue and east of Whites Road North. Durham Regional Police Service said they were called to that area at about 2:20 p.m. and that a 69-year-old woman was found dead inside a home. They said the homicide unit took over the investigation once the autopsy on the woman's body was completed. Her death is Durham's third homicide of the year. On Tuesday, 34-year-old Sandra Coutinho, of Pickering, was arrested and charged with accessory after the fact to murder. She was held in custody for a bail hearing. The charge has not been proven in court. Investigators added that they have identified an additional suspect, however no information has been released about that individual at this time. 'At this time, (we) believe this to be an isolated incident and there is no threat to public safety,' police said in a news release. Police seek witnesses, info after Oshawa home defaced with anti-LGBTQ2S+ slurs

THE CANADIAN PRESS/Doug Ives Police in Durham Region are seeking witnesses and information following a hate-motivated incident in Oshawa they say was directed at the LGBTQ2S+ community. On Sunday, at about 2:50 p.m., police said they attended a call for mischief call at a home near Adelaide Avenue East and Townline Road North. At the scene, officers from East Division said they found a person's property that had been defaced with 'hateful and derogatory slurs.' Investigators said they believe the victim's residence was 'specifically targeted.' 'We are deeply concerned and disheartened by this act of hate and property damage directed toward the LGBTQ2S+ community and all those impacted by this senseless act,' police said in a news release. 'Everyone deserves to feel safe and accepted for who they are.' An investigation is now underway and police say they're 'committed to ensuring those responsible are held accountable.' Palestine protesters occupy defence firm's Teesside factory roof
Protesters have occupied the roof of a factory belonging to a company they say provides military equipment to Palestine Action group has claimed responsibility for targeting the Permoid Industries Ltd building, on Horndale Avenue in Newton Aycliffe, County Durham, in an attack which has seen machinery damaged and parts of the roof ripped off."Free Gaza" has been sprayed in red paint inside the plant and footage shared online by the group shows an improvised blowtorch sending flames into the factory through a hole in the have cordoned off the area around the building and advised the public to stay away. Permoid Industries has been approached for a comment. Palestine Action has accused Permoid Industries of supplying munitions containers to the Israeli armed group initially broke into the factory during the early hours of Saturday morning before returning on Monday morning to occupy the roof.A Durham Police spokesperson said: "A small number of protesters have gained access to the roof."A cordon is in place around the building and officers are continuing to communicate with protesters."Police previously said damage had been caused during the break-in on Saturday but nothing was thought to have be taken.
