KL growth must be ‘liveable for all generations', says FT minister in call for balanced city planning
KUALA LUMPUR, June 18 — Physical development in Kuala Lumpur must be balanced with social needs to ensure the city remains conducive and liveable for all generations, said Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Federal Territories) Datuk Seri Dr Zaliha Mustafa. She said rapid development must also be accompanied by the capacity of the education system, basic amenities, and support for the local community structure. 'Without a doubt, rapid development in Kuala Lumpur will continue to expand, but the need to align development approvals with the readiness of supporting infrastructure such as schools, clinics, road networks, public transport pressure and green spaces must be considered from the earliest stages of planning. 'The siloed approach between developers and local authorities must be replaced with comprehensive planning that considers the overall impact on the area,' she said in a Facebook post yesterday. Earlier, Dr Zaliha chaired the Federal Territories Ministerial Council Meeting, which serves as an engagement platform between her and Kuala Lumpur MPs, together with agencies such as the Federal Territory Kuala Lumpur Education Department (JPWPKL) and PLANMalaysia, to discuss development policies for the federal capital. 'Unlike other states which have executive councillors and assemblymen, the federal territories require a more dynamic approach to policy coordination between the federal government and MPs. As such, this meeting also served as an engagement session with the JPWPKL and PLANMalaysia to foster a stronger and more responsive understanding of policies that reflect on-the-ground realities. 'I also stated that the involvement of MPs in development issues must be more pragmatic, taking into account data, long-term impacts and environmental readiness, and not merely driven by perception or populist approaches that could only affect policy adaptation,' she added. In a related development, Dr Zaliha said she received a courtesy call yesterday from Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing to strengthen strategic cooperation in the tourism sector within the federal territories. The discussion between the two ministers focused on efforts to elevate Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya and Labuan as the country's premier tourism destinations, each with their own unique strengths. She also invited the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (MOTAC) to collaborate in promoting the Borneo Flora Festival, which will be held in Labuan for the first time, with a target of attracting over 50,000 visitors. In addition, Putrajaya Corporation and Tourism Malaysia have also been asked to refine the development of more creative new tourism products in Putrajaya, with the aim of extending tourists' stays and offering fresh and unique experiences to encourage returning visitors. — Bernama

Dr Zaliha orders FT Ministry, JPJ to plug legal loopholes as abandoned vehicles pile up in KL, Putrajaya
KUALA LUMPUR, June 17 — The Federal Territories Department (FTD) has been directed to hold discussions with the Road Transport Department (RTD) to examine the loopholes in existing legislation relating to the disposal of abandoned vehicles in the federal capital and Putrajaya. Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Federal Territories) Datuk Seri Dr Zaliha Mustafa said the action needed to be expedited following the high number of public complaints regarding abandoned vehicles in urban areas. 'In Kuala Lumpur alone, public complaints regarding abandoned vehicles reach over 2,500 cases every year. This is not a small number and should not be allowed to continue. 'However, we are faced with several legal constraints, including abandoned vehicles on private premises that cannot be towed to the local authority (PBT) depot as well as vehicles that have been at the depot for a long time but have not yet been disposed of due to legal obstacles,' she said in a Facebook post yesterday. Earlier, she visited Car Medic Sdn Bhd, a licensed automotive treatment centre that carries out the disposal of vehicles that have been declared written-off, to personally observe the implementation of a faster, more orderly and sustainable disposal process. Datuk Seri Dr Zaliha Mustafa said observes the disposal of vehicles that have been declared written-of at Car Medic Sdn Bhd, a licensed automotive treatment centre. — Picture from Facebook/Dr Zaliha Mustafa Dr Zaliha stressed that abandoned vehicles cannot continue to mar the city, hence a comprehensive solution needs to be jointly formulated by the relevant agencies. She also encouraged owners who want to dispose of their vehicles voluntarily to visit a licensed automotive treatment centre. 'The process is simple and the owner will receive cash payment based on the condition of the vehicle,' she said. — Bernama

Selangor-Putrajaya border delineation nearly done, to be finalised by year-end, says Amirudin
SHAH ALAM, May 27 — The delineation exercise between Putrajaya and Selangor is nearly completed and is expected to be finalised by the end of this year, said Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari. 'So far, the delineation process in Putrajaya is nearly completed (involving) areas such as Sepang and Kuala Langat, while areas (near) Kuala Lumpur like Ampang, Petaling Jaya and Subang will take a little more time because it involves more a complex delineation exercise,' he said after officiating the Selangor Islamic Religious Department (JAIS) Teacher's Day celebration here today. He was commenting on a meeting between a delegation led by him and Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Federal Territories) Datuk Seri Dr Zaliha Mustafa at Menara Seri Wilayah, Putrajaya yesterday. At the meeting, Dr Zaliha raised the issue of resolving the delineation between Kuala Lumpur and Selangor as well as Putrajaya and Selangor to ensure a more integrated border enforcement could be carried out. Amirudin said that at the meeting, the Selangor government requested that 10 per cent of an Islamic cemetery land area in Hulu Semenyih, Selangor, which is owned by the Federal Lands Commissioner (PTP), be opened up for local residents who wish to be buried there. He hopes that this effort will resolve cemetery land management issues under the administration of the Federal Government but located near Selangor residential areas. Yesterday, Dr Zaliha said the opening of a new Islamic cemetery in Hulu Semenyih could meet the need for Muslim cemeteries in Kuala Lumpur for another 28 years. Meanwhile, Amirudin said the proposal to raise the mandatory retirement age from 60 to 65 is still at the preliminary stage, adding that the matter needs to be further scrutinised. Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said had previously proposed that the government consider raising the mandatory retirement age from 60 to 65. — Bernama

PKR election committee issues warning to Rafizi over ‘chai' announcement
JOHOR BARU, May 22 — The PKR election committee has issued a stern warning to the party's incumbent deputy president, Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli, following the announcement of his preferred candidates' line-up (commonly known as 'chai') ahead of the election on Friday. Its chairman, Datuk Seri Dr Zaliha Mustafa, said the announcement was deemed to contravene the party's campaigning guidelines set by the election committee. 'We have stressed in PKR's central leadership council that the election committee will act on any type of complaints. "At present, the party's election committee will issue a stern warning to the parties involved. 'Following that, the complaint will be forwarded to the party's disciplinary committee which has been agreed upon by the party's central leadership council,' Dr Zaliha told reporters at the PKR National Congress 2024/2025 media briefing session held at the Persada International Convention Centre here today. She was joined by PKR secretary-general Fuziah Salleh, the party's information chief Datuk Fahmi Fadzil, and its disciplinary board chairman Datuk Ahmad Kasim. Meanwhile, Dr Zaliha, who is also the minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Federal Territories), said she had ordered the candidates' banners placed at polling station areas to be taken down, as this breached election guidelines. She added that the respective candidates have been instructed to remove the banners from the polling areas. Dr Zaliha also said the election committee has not received any formal complaints throughout the party's election process. 'There are no formal complaints filed with the party's disciplinary board chairman Datuk Ahmad Kasim,' she said, including during the various stages of the election process, such as nominations and campaigning. Yesterday, it was reported that Rafizi had announced his preferred candidates' list, showcasing 25 party candidates. The list includes several key positions within the party, with the four available vice-president posts being Rafizi's choices from a list of 12 candidates contesting. They are Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Chang Lih Kang; Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad; Negeri Sembilan Menteri Besar Datuk Aminuddin Harun; and the political secretary to the PKR president, G Manivanan. The use of a preferred candidates' list, also known in political circles as a chai, has been controversial. However, while its usage in digital format is allowed in limited quantities, Rafizi's open announcement on social media took many by surprise. A total of 251 PKR members are vying for various positions at the party's national congress, including the Angkatan Muda Keadilan (youth) and Wanita Keadilan congresses. The national congress is set to take place from today until this Saturday in Johor Baru.
