Cardinals No. 3 Prospect Dazzles in Double-A Return
Cardinals No. 3 Prospect Dazzles in Double-A Return originally appeared on Athlon Sports. St. Louis Cardinals No. 3 prospect Tink Hence made his first start with Double-A Springfield on Friday night after being activated from the 60-day injured list earlier in the week. Advertisement The 22-year-old held the Houston Astros' Double-A affiliated Corpus Christi Hooks hitless, allowing just one baserunner on a walk while striking out eight batters in 4 1/3 innings of work. Hence was limited to just 66 pitches in his first start since being activated, but he was efficient on the mound. Notably, the once-flame thrower's velocity was rather slow compared to what he was hitting on the radar gun last season. He only reached 96 miles per hour twice with his four-seamer sitting in the low 90's for the majority of the start - a large contrast from last year when he was consistently pitching in the high 90's while occasionally touching 100-plus. St. Louis Cardinals No. 3 prospect Tink Storry-Imagn Images The drop in pitch speed could potentially be due to a new mechanical approach that Hence is taking on the bump. Advertisement "I was kind of getting a little stiff on the mound (before the injury), so (I've) just been working on getting more athletic again," Hence told reporters on Thursday. The work seems to have blossomed into a new stance - and possibly a higher arm slot - on the mound, one in which the righty is more upright and less bent over while throwing pitches. "It was a really good reset for me to really learn (about) myself as a pitcher," Hence said of the lengthy IL stint. "I think it's paying off." The belief around the Springfield organization is that Hence will make just a few more "prove it" starts before being promoted back to Triple-A Memphis, where he was slated to start the year prior to his injury. Cardinals' JJ Wetherholt Talks Development, More in Exclusive Interview
Cardinals' JJ Wetherholt Talks Development, More in Exclusive Interview originally appeared on Athlon Sports. In months, St. Louis Cardinals' No. 1 prospect JJ Wetherholt has not just acclimated himself to Double-A - he's excelled. Advertisement The 22-year-old middle infielder has racked up 55 hits (13 doubles, one triple), four home runs, 24 RBIs, 30 runs scored and five stolen bases in 48 games with the Springfield Cardinals. He also leads the Texas League with a .322 average and .443 on base percentage. Wetherholt spoke with Athlon Sports on Tuesday about his development and more: St. Louis Cardinals No. 1 prospect stands with MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred after being selected 7th overall in the 2024 MLB Jairaj-Imagn Images What's been the biggest difference in the jump from Low-A to Double-A? "Obviously competition. Everyone just is more polished here. I think you get similar stuff profiles in Single-A - you have a lot of raw talent there - but guys here are just stuff-plus - more professional, more command on the mound, better at hitting and fielding. Really just everything is a step up, but it's been a lot of fun adjusting." Advertisement What's an aspect of your game that you're striving to develop this season? "(I've been trying to) continue to grow on the bases. I had a very good foundation in college, but just trying to find a way to take that to the next level." With an abundance of middle infielders in the organization, are you open to moving positions if it means getting your shot? "I really don't care. I'll play anywhere, but obviously my focus right now is to just become the best shortstop and middle infielder as I can and continue to develop as a player and then whatever happens, happens. I'm open to anything." What's the best piece of advice you've gotten in your career? "Keep your strengths, your strengths. Know that (your strengths) are what make you the best player possible. It's easy to hone in on what you're not good at but staying locked into what you're good at and trying to do that every day is what's going to get you where you want to go.' Advertisement Praises from Springfield Cardinals' Teammates Cardinals No. 6 prospect Leonardo Bernal and No. 9 prospect Chase Davis also spoke to Athlon Sports about Wetherholt's impact on the team this season, sharing feelings that the top prospect's talent matched with his personable character have aided in Springfield's success through the first half of the season. What are your thoughts on seeing fellow 2024 top 10 picks Jac Caglionone, Christian Moore and Nick Kurtz already making their MLB Debut? "It's great. I know a lot of those guys, so I'm super excited for them. It was a really good draft class, I thought, so to see them have a ton of success in the minors ... is so cool to see." Advertisement When that day comes for you, who will be in attendance? "Hopefully anyone who can come. My family, my parents ... but that'll come when it comes and hopefully I'll have a good (amount) of people there, but obviously we've got different focuses right now, so I'm just trying to keep that going." He's Baseball's Most Spectacular Home Run Thief—and He's Known as Spider-Man
Before he runs out to his position in center field for the Athletics, Denzel Clarke writes a message to himself in the palm of his glove. It says: 'I got your back.' He started this ritual in Double-A last season, during a dismal slump at the plate. The words serve as a constant reminder of a promise he made to his pitchers.

Yankees Facing Difficult Ben Rice Decision After Giancarlo Stanton Update
Yankees Facing Difficult Ben Rice Decision After Giancarlo Stanton Update originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The longer that All-Star designated hitter Giancarlo Stanton remained on the injured list, the longer that young slugger Ben Rice got to stay in the New York Yankees' lineup. Rice's run as the Yankees' starting DH is nearing its final weeks, however. Stanton is finally nearing a return to the majors after a prolonged battle with tennis elbow in both arms; the five-time All-Star begins a rehab assignment Tuesday at Double-A Somerset. While Rice has been an impressive breakout star in his first full season, not even a propensity for mammoth home runs stands to keep him in the lineup. Rice enters Tuesday hitting .241 with 12 homers, 25 RBI, and a .825 OPS through 218 plate appearances. Rice ranks 34th among all qualified hitters in OPS, and his .497 slugging percentage is 24th in the league. Most teams would kill for production like that, but most teams aren't the Yankees. Stanton's contract all but guarantees him a spot as the Yankees' DH, and Paul Goldschmidt is enjoying an All-Star-caliber season at first base. That doesn't leave many at-bats for Rice, especially because the Yankees remain committed to Austin Wells at catcher. SNY's Andy Martino recently dismissed the idea the Yankees should demote Rice to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre so he can get regular at-bats. Martino instead proposed the Yankees work to play Stanton, Rice, and Goldschmidt at least two out of every three games. Martino also reported that the Yankees do not intend to play Rice anywhere but at catcher, first base, or designated hitter. "Rice is closer to gracing the cover of 'MLB: The Show' than he is to earning a trip to Scranton," Martino wrote. Either way, the Yankees find themselves in a difficult situation, one where there are too many hitters with too few at-bats to go around. It's better than the alternative, as teams like the Colorado Rockies and Miami Marlins know all too well. This story was originally reported by Athlon Sports on Jun 10, 2025, where it first appeared.
