The Miami Dolphins are dealing with multiple trade rumors for some of their best players from the 2024 season. Jalen Ramsey, the All-Pro cornerback, is expected to be traded as the offseason training programs begin. The other player in trade rumors is tight end Jonnu Smith. Both made a decision ahead of the Dolphins' mandatory minicamps.

According to Cameron Wolfe, NFL insider for NFL Network, both Ramsey and Smith plan to skip mandatory minicamp for the Dolphins, according to Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel.
With the trade rumors surrounding Ramsey, with the Dolphins painting a clear picture that Ramsey won't be on the team in 2025, it's no surprise he's skipping out on mandatory training camp. Smith, on the other hand, is a lot more intriguing.
Smith is missing mandatory minicamp due to his desire for a pay raise and a new contract overall. In the final year of a two-year, $8.4 million deal, Smith wants not only more money but more security in his deal.

The Dolphins' tight end is coming off an incredible season, where he set career highs in targets, receptions, receiving yards, and touchdowns. On 111 targets, Smith hauled in 88 receptions for 884 yards and eight touchdowns.

His production, in his first year with the Dolphins and quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, was the best he's had in his career. Smith, in his age-30 season and eighth season in the NFL, had a much more prolific year than expected.
His season has led to his desire for a new deal, and after being named a Pro-Bowler and setting career highs, it's no surprise that he's looking for a new deal.

Between Smith looking for a new deal, and demanding a trade otherwise, and Ramsey already halfway out the door in Miami, the Dolphins' mandatory minicamp is a lot more interesting in 2025 than it's been in previous years.
While neither situation is expected to be solved soon, both are situations that the Dolphins shouldn't hold off on resolving. Ramsey's value isn't likely to increase, while Smith will continue to sit out until he cashes in after a career year.
