Kevin Feige Confirms 'Fantastic Four' Directly Leads into 'Avengers: Doomsday'

Summary The architectural blueprint ofMarvel Studios' Multiverse Saga continues to unfold with strategic precision. During a presentation atDisney's CineEurope convention, Marvel Studios head honchoKevin Feigeofficially confirmed that the events ofThe Fantastic Four: First Stepswill directly lead into December 2026'sAvengers: Doomsday. This revelation cements the highly anticipated debut of Marvel's First Family as an integral cornerstone of the next Avengers-level threat. The Fantastic Four: First Steps, set for release on July 25, 2025, has already generated immense buzz with its unique premise. The film will reportedly take place on an alternate, retro-futuristic 1960s Earth, introducing audiences to Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards, Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm, Joseph Quinn as Johnny Storm, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Ben Grimm. The primary antagonist is confirmed to be the planet-devouring cosmic entity, Galactus (voiced by Ralph Ineson), alongside his herald, the Silver Surfer (Julia Garner). While director Matt Shakman has indicated Doctor Doom won't be in thisFantastic Fourfilm, theThunderbolts*post-credits scene already teased the team's arrival in the mainMCUtimeline, making this direct narrative connection somewhat anticipated by keen-eyed fans. Feige's confirmation at CineEurope reinforces the interconnected nature of Phase 6 and Doomsday, directed by the returningRusso Brothersand starringRobert Downey the iconic villain Doctor Doom, is currently shooting in London. The direct link suggests that the Fantastic Four's journey – likely involving their displacement from their own reality and their encounter with a cosmic threat – will directly set the stage for the massive multiversal conflict that Doctor Doom instigates in the next Avengers film. This strategic narrative tethering serves to elevate the importance ofThe Fantastic Four: First Steps, positioning it not just as a standalone origin-adjacent story, but as a critical precursor to the MCU's next grand saga. Fans now have a clearer understanding that the cosmic stakes and character introductions within the Fantastic Four's debut will resonate profoundly in the lead-up toDoomsday.

Marvel boss Kevin Feige confuses all of us by saying the Fantastic Four ship in the Thunderbolts post-credits might not be "the same ship" as the Excelsior

When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has just dropped a big hint about how The Fantastic Four: First Steps will connect to the rest of the MCU as it kicks off Marvel Phase 6, all hinging on the post-credits scene of Thunderbolts*, in which the newly minted New Avengers watch the FF's ship the Excelsior approach Earth on a view screen. "Their ship is the Excelsior, and there is a Fantastic Four ship entering the MCU ... But I'm not sure they're the same ship," Feige tells Empire Magazine (via Culture Crave). The thing is, even as a lifelong comic reader and fan of the Fantastic Four, I have no idea what the heck he means by this. It doesn't help that there's not any more context given with the tease. There are a few possibilities that spring to mind, but the grammar puzzle nature of Feige's words - likely intentional - leaves me with more questions than answers. My best guess is that the ship, while similar to the Excelsior, is a different ship of some kind. It could be a different, souped-up ship that the FF will use to travel between dimensions. Or perhaps even something related to Doctor Doom. Maybe most likely is the idea that the ship will be a vessel by which Reed Richards and his family are able to escape the destruction of their home universe. In the lead up to 2015's Secret Wars, Reed helps build a so-called "ark" that allows him and some of Marvel's heroes to escape reality being rewritten around them. What seems least likely is that there's yet another Fantastic Four besides the team that lives in their own side reality away from the core MCU. It's all but certain that the ones who star in The Fantastic Four: First Steps will be the same FF to travel into the MCU. That said, it's not impossible that this is somehow the Reed Richards and family of the core MCU, or some other strange twist. We probably won't find out exactly what the deal is until The Fantastic Four: First Steps arrives in theaters on July 25. In the meantime, check out our guide to all the upcoming Marvel movies and shows for everything else that's on the way.

‘Ironheart' Will Continue Tony Stark's Legacy, and Robert Downey Jr. Approves

'I want to continue Stark's legacy,' says Riri Williams, the main character in the upcoming Marvel Studios show Ironheart. Played by Dominique Thorne, Riri is a genius inventor, just like the late, great Iron Man, but without his billionaire resources. That conflict will be at the heart of the new show, which debuts on Disney+ June 24, and Tony Stark himself just endorsed it. Two fantastic Ironheart videos just came online, one of which focuses on the practical suits built for the production. Executive producer Ryan Coogler, who introduced Riri in his film Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, chimes in along with other members of the creative team. Here's where we get to see Riri really try and be the MCU's next Tony Stark. Gear up for a behind-the-scenes look at how Riri's suit came to life—straight from the filmmakers and special effects team behind Marvel Television's #Ironheart. Streaming June 24 on @DisneyPlus. — Marvel Studios (@MarvelStudios) June 17, 2025 In reality, though, we know that the next Tony Stark isn't Tony Stark at all. He's Doctor Doom. Robert Downey Jr. is currently in London filming Avengers: Doomsday, where he plays the titular villain, and the actor chimed in from the set to give his approval to Ironheart during an interview with Good Morning America. The full interview is below, but we've cued it right up to Downey's bit. Now, it's quite clear Downey is reading a pre-written statement there, and to some, that might make it seem forced. But he didn't have to read or record anything at all. If this were a political campaign, Ironheart getting the official backing of the Godfather of the MCU like this would be a big deal. And we still think it's at least a medium-sized deal, just because who better to know stories of geniuses in super suits than Robert Downey Jr.? Ironheart debuts June 24 and is one of only a handful of Marvel Studios shows coming to Disney+ in the next year or so. After this, there's the animated Eyes of Wakanda and Marvel Zombies, followed by Wonder Man in December, season two of Daredevil Born Again, probably sometime next year, and, finally, the Vision show. Will Ironheart be the best of the bunch? What kind of impact, if any, will it have on the MCU? We'll find out soon. Here's a look at the episode titles: Riri's notebook = unlocked. 🔓 Check out the official #Ironheart episode guide and stream on @DisneyPlus starting June 24. — Marvel Studios (@MarvelStudios) June 17, 2025

Chris Evans' Candid Reaction to Learning Robert Downey Jr. Is Playing Doctor Doom: ‘Huh?'

While the latest addition to the Avengers movie series will feature a mixture of current fan favorites, former actors reprising their superhero roles, and new faces making their debut, it'll also have a significant villain twist. Longtime Iron Man actor Robert Downey Jr. is set to play the villain role, and will be Doctor Doom in the 2026 film Avengers: Doomsday. While it's a noteworthy change for Downey, the casting decision drew rave reviews from fans. Many Marvel fans are happy Downey is back for the upcoming movie, although the decision to flip the high-profile actor from being a core member of the Avengers to the next villain they face was still surprising. One name that found himself on the "surprised" side of reactions when the news broke was another former Avenger and longtime Captain America star, Chris Evans. Evans recently sat down with Screen Rant alongside Materialists co-star Dakota Johnson to discuss their new film. However, the topic of Downey as Doctor Doom was understandably a talking point, and Evans revealed his candid reaction to finding out the news. Johnson asked the million-dollar question many fans likely initially wondered by saying, "He's a villain now?" This led to Evans explaining his own one-word response to hearing that Downey would play Doctor Doom, and offering an interesting food metaphor for clarity. "When I first heard it, I was like, 'Huh?'" Evans admitted. "But it's almost like cheese and the crust. You're like, 'There's nothing more we can do with this pizza,' and then you're like, 'Oh, damn. You know? What else? What if we did this? (makes flipping motion). Whoa.'" While a pizza metaphor isn't quite the direction I expected Evans to go, he deserves some credit for uniqueness. Evans has repeatedly said he will not reprise his role as Captain America in Avengers: Doomsday, with the shield officially being passed to Anthony Mackie. As for Mackie, he stepped into the role for the 2025 film, Captain America: Brave New Evans' Candid Reaction to Learning Robert Downey Jr. Is Playing Doctor Doom: 'Huh?' first appeared on Men's Journal on Jun 10, 2025

Marvel Skipping Comic-Con's Hall H This Year

Marvel will not need a spot in San Diego Comic-Con's cavernous Hall H this year, Deadline has confirmed. The news comes as Disney and Marvel last week pushed the release date of its next big Marvel movie, Avengers: Doomsday, to a December 2026 release, meaning the studio will have Comic-Con 2026 to rev up fans. Sources said that led to the decision to sit out this year's event, which runs July 24-27. There are also plans for booth promoting the release of The Fantastic Four: First Steps, the franchise reboot that hits theaters that Friday. It was at last year's Comic-Con during its traditional Saturday night Hall H presentation where Marvel revealed two new Avengers movies — Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars — and revealed that Robert Downey Jr would play Doctor Doom. Avengers: Doomsday now has a December 18, 2026 release date, while Secret Wars is set for December 17, 2027. Marvel's most recent movie, the May 1-released Thunderbolts*, has grossed $359.3 million to date. If a no-Avengers-no-Hall-H scenario sounds familiar, it is: Marvel skipped its Hall H slot in 2011 because the original The Avengers was still in production, and passed again in 2015 and 2018. It also skipped 2020 and 2021 because of Covid and 2023 because of the Hollywood strikes. Next up on the fan confab for Marvel is Team Fantastic Four showing up at CCXP Mexico on Saturday.
