BHASHINI and CRIS to develop AI-driven multilingual solutions for Indian Railways
The Digital India Bhashini Division (DIBD) and the Centre for Railway Information Systems (CRIS) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to develop multilingual artificial intelligence (AI) solutions for Indian Railways. The collaboration is set to enhance the way passengers interact with railway services by providing support in 22 Indian languages. The move is a step towards improving linguistic inclusivity and digital transformation in the Indian Railways. The MoU was signed by BHASHINI CEO Amitabh Nag and CRIS Managing Director G.V.L. Satya Kumar in the country's capital. The initiative will see the integration of BHASHINI's advanced language technology stack, including Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR), Text-to-Text Translation, Text-to-Speech (TTS), and Optical Character Recognition (OCR), into CRIS-managed systems such as the National Train Enquiry System (NTES) and RailMadad. Nag said: 'This collaboration will transform how millions of passengers engage with railway services daily. Through BHASHINI's AI capabilities, we are ensuring that language is no longer a barrier to accessing vital public services.' The partnership's objectives extend to co-developing chatbots and voice assistants for multilingual passenger support, creating multilingual interfaces for railway enquiry setups, and scaling services through both cloud and on-premises infrastructure. These AI capabilities are planned to be deployed across various platforms, including websites, mobile apps, kiosks, and call centres, supporting real-time, speech-based interaction in multiple Indian languages. Joint technical workshops and pilot deployments are scheduled to begin in the coming months. Kumar said: 'CRIS is proud to partner with BHASHINI to implement inclusive, AI-powered solutions across our digital platforms. This will enhance accessibility, transparency, and efficiency in our passenger-facing services.' In a related development, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently inaugurated the first of 1,200 Siemens Mobility D9-9000 HP electric locomotives, manufactured at the Indian Railways factory in Dahod, Gujarat. The D9 locomotive is touted as the "second most powerful" in Indian Railways, following the 12,000 horsepower WAG-12B. Last month, India AI Mission, under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), announced a collaboration with Intel India to advance Artificial Intelligence (AI) capabilities and skilling. The collaboration will focus on key programmes including YuvaAI empowers (for school students); StartupAI (for startups); and IndiaAI Dialogues (for public sector leaders and policy practitioners). It will also enable Bhashini to scale to remote classrooms across India on AI.

MoU signed to include Garo, Khasi languages of Meghalaya in Bhasini platform
Shillong, The Meghalaya government on Tuesday signed an MoU with the central government's Digital India Bhashini Division for the integration of the state's Garo and Khasi languages into the platform, officials said. The Bhashini platform is breaking down language barriers by providing seamless access to government services in 22 languages. Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma who was present during the signing of the MoU said this is a landmark step towards linguistic inclusion. The inclusion of the Garo and Khasi languages enables Meghalaya to join a select group of states making their indigenous languages digitally accessible across the nation. "Technology today has reached a level that was once unimaginable. This step will have a profound impact across all aspects of society and governance, from grassroots communication to enhancing tourism, entrepreneurship, education, and healthcare," Sangma said. This initiative will revolutionise how government departments communicate and engage with citizens and open new opportunities for entrepreneurs and help in making governance more inclusive and effective, he said. 'I encourage everyone to use technology to forward job creation, innovation, and entrepreneurship," the chief minister said. As part of the initial implementation, a State Language Mission for Bhashini has been constituted under Chief Secretary DP Wahlang. The Mission will ensure seamless integration, research, and the continued development of digital resources for Garo and Khasi languages, including the incorporation of distinct alphabets and dialectical nuances, according to an official statement. While technology will facilitate overcoming challenges, it is critical to preserve the essence of indigenous languages and cultures, he said. "Language is our identity. Culture defines who we are. While we embrace technology, we must never forget our roots. Our government is committed to research, conservation, and documentation of the languages, cultures, and histories of all tribes and communities in Meghalaya," Sangma added. Discussions are also on to explore deeper historical and cultural connections between the tribes of Meghalaya and those in other regions such as Myanmar and Cambodia, the chief minister said. CEO of Digital India Bhashini Division, Amitabh Nag, and Commissioner Secretary of IT Department Pravin Bakshi signed the MoU for implementation of the initiative in the state. Meghalaya has been demanding that the two languages - Khasi and Garo be recognised as national languages under the Constitution's Eighth Schedule.

The Bhashini app has the Khasi language and will mature after getting input from the state. However, the Garo language is in the process of being built into the AI model form, the data is being collected now. The MoU with Meghalaya will speed up and act as a catalyst in adding Garo to the Bhashini App, and of course, to mature the Khasi language. Experts said: "The initiative is a significant milestone and step towards integration of Garo and Khasi languages with all 22 Indian languages and brings about cultural integration and intellectual exchange of ideas and thoughts. It will promote tourism and rural innovation, and last-mile connectivity and integration." CEO Digital India Bhashini Division, Amitabh Nag and Commissioner Secretary, IT Department, Pravin Bakshi signed the MoU for implementation of the initiative in the state.
