Paula Dinamarca of Cannes Un Certain Regard Winner ‘The Mysterious Gaze of the Flamingo' Joins Buzz Pic ‘A Decorous Woman' (EXCLUSIVE)

Chilean trans actress-activist Paula Dinamarca, who starred in Cannes' Un Certain Regard Grand Prix winner, 'The Mysterious Gaze of the Flamingo,' has joined the stellar cast of the upcoming 'A Decorous Woman.' Pic was one of the more anticipated projects to be showcased at the 2025 Malaga Festival Fund & Co-Production event (MAFF). Dinamarca also starred in 'Flamingo' director Diego Céspedes' acclaimed short film 'The Melting Creatures,' which Rodrigo Díaz of Parina Films produced. 'Paula has a presence that resonates on and off screen. She brought depth, sensitivity and a powerful emotional honesty to her role in 'The Melting Creatures,'' said Díaz. 'Paula doesn't perform emotions – she channels experiences in a way that feels immediate and fully lived. Her work is guided by an acute awareness of the character's internal world, as she engages with the material from a place of truth. Watching her inhabit moments of joy or sorrow with such openness reveals the kind of presence that gives real meaning to her performance,' he added. Dinamarca will play opposite lead Catalina Saavedra, best known for her lauded career-launching performance in Sundance Grand Jury prizewinner, 'The Maid.' The debut feature of Chilean-Spanish director Natalia Luque, 'A Decorous Woman' melds drama and comedy, reality and imagination through the point of view of a recent empty nester hairdresser. Set in present-day downtown Santiago, in a shopping mall seemingly frozen in time, the film centers on Marta María (Saavedra), a 55-year-old hairdresser facing an empty nest after her only daughter departs for a year in France. To cope with the loneliness, she immerses herself in her work, finding solace and connection by living vicariously through her clients' stories. 'I have followed Paula Dinamarca's trajectory and I've always been fascinated by her capacity for conveying deep emotions through her gaze. Her acting is impressive – she can achieve deep layers of characterization. In this film, she plays Lola, a numerologist and client of the protagonist, who, just by looking at you, knows what you are feeling and has a special gift for telling stories,' said Luque, adding: 'I think Paula is perfect for this role, not only because of her presence in the scene but also because her connection to the audience is moving' The co-production, involving Parina Films (Chile), France's Tomsa Films and Madre Content from the U.S., is set to start filming by April next year, with its debut targeted for the first semester of 2027. Madre Content, a Latinx company launched in 2023 by Chilean filmmaker Francisca Alegría ('The Cow Who Sang a Song Into the Future'), was able to tap a grant from the Chilean Audiovisual Fund 2024 in its Feature Film Production category, securing 30% of its budget. In her previous work, Luque has often explored underrepresented spaces and nuanced characters, often delving into the intimate worlds of middle-class women in their workplaces. Her most recent short film, 'So They Say,' premiered at the 2023 Palm Springs ShortFest and was also selected at Telluride and POFF Shorts, among others. 'Don't Let Me Die Alone' ('No me dejen morir solo') is set to be directed and produced by Francisco Rodríguez Teare ('Otro Sol') of Axolotls Cine, where Diaz is a minority shareholding partner. Rodriguez Teare's second feature centers on Mamani, a miserable delivery boy in the northern coastal city of Iquique, Chile who survives his own suicide attempt and meets Jordi, a retired thief, and Sofía, his niece. Drawn into mummy trafficking, Mamani unexpectedly finds purpose and the possibility of belonging to a family. 'Don't Let Me Die Alone' is lead produced by Axolotls Cine alongside co-producers Michigan Films (Belgium), co-producers of Rodríguez Teare's docu-fiction hybrid 'Otro Sol,' and by Chile-based Mimbre Films. ‘The Mysterious Gaze of the Flamingo' Wins Un Certain Regard Prize at Cannes 2025

Ahead of the 2025 awards ceremony on Saturday, May 24, the festival has announced the winners for the Un Certain Regard section, with the top prize going to 'The Mysterious Gaze of the Flamingo.' A co-production between Chile, France, Belgium, Spain, and Germany, the 1980s-set drama marks the feature directorial debut of Chilean filmmaker Diego Céspedes. The Best Screenplay award for the Un Certain Regard section went to Harry Lighton for his feature directorial debut, A24's 'Pillion,' starring Harry Melling and Alexander Skarsgård. In his Critic's Pick review out of Cannes, IndieWire's Ryan Lattanzio said of the film, 'Dick-sucking, boot-licking, and ball-gagging are de rigueur for a movie like writer/director Harry Lighton's wildly graphic and strangely moving BDSM romance, 'Pillion.' But for a British queer film that puts the particulars of a gay dominant-submissive affair (or arrangement, better yet) up front and up close, actors Alexander Skarsgård and Harry Melling find the sweet center of a story marked by clamps, cages, and assless unitards.' Ben Croll wrote of the film, 'Split into four chapters and filmed on grainy, 16mm stock that leaves a mask of schmutz around the corners of the frame, 'A Poet' loops around questions of art and commerce in an endearingly loopy tone. The film's bawdy sense of humor plays off a non-professional star — himself a full-time teacher from a nearby school — that looks like he was drawn by Robert Crumb and acts the part just as well.' 'Urchin' star Frank Dillane shared the performance award with Cléo Diara for the Portuguese postcolonial drama 'I Only Rest in the Storm.' Dillane, who stars in 'Urchin' as a homeless London man succumbing to addiction, will end up in the fall awards conversation stateside if Harris Dickinson's debut finds the right distributor. 'I Only Rest in the Storm' is also looking for a buyer, as are 'Flamingo,' 'A Poet,' and Palestine's well-reviewed 'Once Upon a Time in Taza.' Yet to be announced is the Camera d'Or, the overall prize for the best first feature, which encompasses films throughout the official selection including Un Certain Regard. Candidates for this award still include Dickinson for 'Urchin' as well as Scarlett Johansson's 'Eleanor the Great' and Kristen Stewart's 'The Chronology of Water.' The Johansson and Stewart films didn't win any Un Certain Regard awards on Friday, but that doesn't eliminate them from potentially receiving the Camera d'Or on Saturday. Chilean AIDS Drama ‘The Mysterious Gaze of the Flamingo' Wins Un Certain Regard Award at Cannes

The Cannes Film Festival's second-most prestigious competition, Un Certain Regard, is typically dominated by newer, less heralded names in world cinema. But there was more star power than usual at stake in this year's awards ceremony, as pundits wondered whether one of the three debut features by prominent actors-turned-directors in this year's lineup — Kristen Stewart, Scarlett Johansson and Harris Dickinson — could land a prize. As it turned out, people needn't have worried about a Hollywood takeover. Stewart's 'The Chronology of Water' and Johansson's 'Eleanor the Great' both went unawarded, as the jury threw a relative curveball in handing the Prix Un Certain Regard to Chilean director Diego Céspedes for his alluringly titled first feature 'The Mysterious Gaze of the Flamingo,' an offbeat study of a transgender commune living in the Chilean desert around the onset of the AIDS epidemic in the 1980s. The jury, meanwhile, praised it as 'raw and powerful and yet funny and wild,' before handing the prize to an astonished Céspedes, who stated tearily that his film 'began with all the angry lovers to just wanted to love like everybody else.' The decision rested with a jury headed by a relative newcomer herself: 31-year-old British writer-director Molly Manning Walker won the top prize in Un Certain Regard two years ago for her vivid debut 'How to Have Sex,' and was joined on the panel by filmmakers Louise Courvoisier and Roberto Minervini, actor Nahuel Perez Biscayart and Rotterdam fest director Vanja Kaluđerčić. Best Screenplay went to Pillion, the debut feature from British filmmaker Harry Lighton. The film stars Harry Melling as a timid young gay man named Colin who comes into his sexuality when a biker named Ray (Alexander Skarsgård) takes him on as his sexual submissive.
