Gang jailed in Dubai for stealing Dhs9,900 from a man's account after forcing him to reveal bank details over phone
Dubai Misdemeanour and minor offences court sentenced a five-member Asian gang to one month in jail, to be followed by deportation, and fined them Dhs9,900 for defrauding an Arab national by impersonating a police officer and stealing funds from his bank account. The case dates back to March 2025, when the victim filed a report with Dubai Police, stating he had lost Dhs9,900 after receiving a call from one of the suspects claiming he was a police officer tasked by the Central Bank to update his bank account details. The gangster threatened the victim that his account would be frozen if the victim did not disclose his card details and PIN so the victim complied, only to discover the amounts were withdrawn moments later. Dubai Police's Cybercrime Unit found out that the gangsters used a residential apartment in Deira as a hub for targeting victims across the UAE. Investigations revealed that smart phones used to contact victims and commit crimes were found hidden in plastic bags and shoes. Forensic analysis affirmed one device was used in the victim's case. On being questioned, the gangsters admitted to impersonating police, bank, or government officials, tricking victims into revealing bank details. They confessed that they were recruited and directed by a fugitive who had rented the apartment for them before fleeing the country. They added that he used to contact them via phone, instructing them to collect victims' bank card details and PINs. Once the data was obtained, he used to withdraw money from the victims' accounts and send the gang members monthly payments ranging from Dhs1,800 to Dhs2,000.

UAE's GDP reached Dhs1,776 billion in 2024 with 4% growth
The UAE's real gross domestic product (GDP) reached Dhs1,776 billion in 2024, marking a 4 per cent increase compared to that of 2023. Non-oil GDP grew by 5 percent, totalling Dhs1,342 billion, while oil-related activities contributed Dhs434 billion to the overall economy. Abdulla bin Touq Al Marri, Minister of Economy, emphasised that the latest GDP figures released by the Federal Competitiveness and Statistics Centre (FCSC) reflect a renewed and positive momentum in the national economy. They further underscore the new milestones achieved by the UAE in economic diversification and competitiveness, guided by the vision and directives of its wise leadership. With non-oil sectors accounting for 75.5 per cent of the UAE's GDP by the end of last year, Al Marri emphasised that these indicators reflect the sustained success of the nation's economic strategies, which are driving the transition toward an innovative, knowledge-based, and sustainable economic model aligned with global trends and emerging technologies. Al Marri said, 'Under the leadership of President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, and guidance from His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, we continue to strengthen our national efforts to achieve the objectives of 'We the UAE 2031' vision. With each milestone, we are moving closer to achieving the UAE's target of raising GDP to Dhs3 trillion by the next decade, while reinforcing its position as a global hub for the new economy, driven by sustainable development, international competitiveness, and forward-looking leadership.' Hanan Mansour Ahli, Managing Director of the Federal Competitiveness and Statistics Centre, highlighted that the 4 percent GDP growth in 2024 reflects the UAE's exceptional economic performance, supported by a forward‑looking vision focused on sustainable, non‑oil‑driven growth. Hanan Ahli further stated that the guidance and forward-looking vision of the UAE's wise leadership are focused on building an advanced and globally competitive economic model. Economic diversification is adopted not only as a strategic objective but also as a core operational approach, driving sustainable development and enhancing societal well-being. This model serves as a powerful catalyst for continued progress, ensuring sustained GDP growth and positive performance across a wide range of economic and development indicators. The transport and storage sector emerged as the fastest-growing contributor to GDP in 2024, recording a 9.6 percent year-over-year growth. This growth was primarily driven by the exceptional performance of UAE airports, which handled 147,8 million passengers—an increase of approximately 10 percent. The building and construction sector followed with an 8.4 percent growth rate, supported by substantial investments in urban infrastructure. Financial and insurance activities expanded by 7 percent, while the hospitality sector, encompassing hotels and restaurants, rose by 5.7 percent. Meanwhile, the real estate sector recorded a 4.8 percent growth. With regard to non-oil economic activities that contributed most to the GDP, the trade sector contributed 16.8 percent, the manufacturing sector accounted for 13.5 percent, and financial and insurance activities contributed 13.2 percent. Construction and building contributed 11.7 percent, while real estate activities accounted for 7.8 percent of the non-oil GDP. WAM

Adnoc L&S, Borouge sign deal to boost UAE petrochemical exports
Borouge and Adnoc Logistics & Services (Adnoc L&S) have entered a 15-year strategic partnership that will support a significant increase in the production and export of petrochemicals from the UAE. The mutually beneficial service agreement will deliver a minimum guaranteed value of $531 million (Dhs1,950 million), supporting the next phase of Borouge's accelerated growth plans, driving operational cost savings over the full contract term, realising more than $50 million in cost savings and efficiencies in the first five years alone, and enhancing the company's supply chain network. The agreement covers port management, container handling, and feeder container ship services for the Borouge Container Terminal in Al Ruwais Industrial City, Abu Dhabi. Adnoc L&S will manage the transportation of up to 70 per cent of Borouge's annual production, which will increase significantly following the completion of the Borouge 4 plant expansion. It will deploy a minimum of two dedicated container feeder ships to transport Borouge's products from Al Ruwais to the deepwater ports of Jebel Ali in Dubai and Khalifa Port in Abu Dhabi. Hazeem Sultan Al Suwaidi, CEO of Borouge, commented, 'This agreement builds on our long-standing collaboration with Adnoc L&S, a partnership that has been instrumental in meeting the evolving needs of our customers in high-growth markets. 'It brings significant benefits to Borouge; driving substantial operational cost savings and enhancing our Logistics Variable Cost (LVC), as well as complementing our existing rail operations and expanding the flexibility of our supply chain network.' 'With the rapid increase in our production capacity, we are advancing our capabilities in delivering differentiated products and solutions efficiently, while keeping pace with rising global demand.' As Borouge plans to ramp up production capacity by 1.4 million tonnes per annum by the end of 2026 through its Borouge 4 mega project, Borouge will become the world's largest single-site polyolefin complex. The partnership with Adnoc L&S will further enhance Borouge's supply chain efficiency as well as reinforcing Adnoc L&S' commitment to delivering innovative, integrated supply chain solutions that enhance trade, strengthen industrial resilience, and support the UAE's vision for economic diversification and global leadership. Captain Abdulkareem Al Masabi, CEO of Adnoc L&S, said, 'This comprehensive container terminal agreement marks a major milestone in our successful partnership with Borouge, delivering on Adnoc L&S' strategy to provide seamless, end-to-end logistics solutions that power the UAE's industrial growth and export ambitions. By leveraging our extensive maritime and logistics expertise, we are ensuring that Borouge's world-class petrochemical products reach global markets efficiently and competitively.' WAM
