Himachal CM gives directions for notices against developers over delay in hydropower projects
Shimla: Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu has directed the Energy department to issue a cancellation notice to non-serious hydro power developers, whose projects have remained stalled for many years. He presided over a high-level meeting of the Power Department on Saturday. He said that undue delays in project execution are causing significant losses to the state exchequer, according to a release. Hydropower is the mainstay of the State's economy, and the state government is committed to ensuring that the benefits reach the people of the State. Sukhu said that the present state government is committed to safeguarding the interests of the state's people across multiple platforms and forums. In a major decision, the State Government has decided to take back 382 MW of the Sunni, 210 MW of the Luhri Stage-I, and 66 MW of the Dhaulasidh projects previously allotted to SJVNL. He said that the state government will not advance on upcoming projects like Kishau and Renuka Dam unless the neighbouring states provide the settlement of the long-standing concrete assurances pending the Bhakra Beas Management Board arrears. During the meeting, the Chief Minister was informed that BBMB has identified 4403 MW of power capacity on Bhakra Dam and 8700 MW capacity on Kol Dam for establishing pump storage projects. He directed the department to take the lead in this direction and move forward immediately so that the people of the State reap maximum benefits from these projects. Sukhu instructed the HPSEBL to commission the Kaza solar power project by August 2025 and expedite the one MW solar power project with battery backup at Dhanwas in the remote Pangi valley of Chamba district. This project is expected to be completed by December 2025 and will guarantee uninterrupted power supply to the 19 gram panchayats of the valley even during heavy snowfall. The Chief Minister also reviewed the progress of the 'Green Panchayat scheme' and directed the speeding up of the project. He also took stock of the under-construction 450 MW Shong Tong Hydro Power Project and asked the Power Corporation to complete it within the stipulated time period. Furthermore, it was also decided that the HPSEBL will establish five Substations with a 66 KV capacity, while the HPPTCL will set up 10 Substations with capacities of 132 KV and 220 KV in accordance with the directions of the Himachal Pradesh State Electricity Regulatory Commission.

Shongtong-Karcham gets 2026 deadline, HP bets big on hydro
Shimla: Himachal Pradesh chief minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu has set a firm Nov 2026 deadline for the completion of the long-delayed Shongtong-Karcham hydroelectric project, saying the 450-MW plant will generate Rs 1,000 crore in annual revenue and strengthen the state's green energy ambitions. Sukhu on Monday inspected the under-construction site in Kinnaur district — visiting both the power house at Karcham and the barrage site at Powari — where he met engineers and workers. He said that even though the project had dragged on for 13 years, the state's current Congress govt had fast-tracked its progress and was committed to commissioning it on schedule. "This project symbolises our focus on tapping river resources to drive economic growth," Sukhu said, adding that the state was moving actively to regain control over stalled or externally-managed hydroelectric initiatives. He claimed that the govt was assessing the total expenditure incurred on other major hydropower projects — including Dhaulasidh, Luhri, and Sunni — with plans to resume and regulate their construction under state-led terms. "Unlike the previous BJP govt, which compromised state interests, we are prioritising Himachal Pradesh's control over its energy assets," Sukhu said. The CM also announced that HP was advancing plans for a geothermal power facility at Tapri in Kinnaur and expanding its capacity in solar and green hydrogen energy. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch vàng CFDs với mức chênh lệch giá thấp nhất IC Markets Đăng ký Undo Despite being an energy-surplus state, HP still buys electricity from neighbouring states during winter for Rs 5 to 6 a unit. Sukhu said the state was ramping up solar-energy generation to offset this seasonal gap. "It has 626 MW worth of solar-power projects in various stages of development currently through the Himachal Pradesh Power Corporation Limited (HPPCL)," he said. Revenue Minister Jagat Singh Negi and senior district officials accompanied Sukhu during the site visit. MSID:: 121728609 413 |

Baira Siul Hydro Power Project: HC stays take over, issues notice on NHPC plea
Himachal Pradesh high court, as an interim relief to National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC), has stayed the move of the state government to take over 180 MW Baira Siul Hydro Power Project. Justice Ajay Mohan Goel directed the state government to maintain status quo qua the Baira Siul Hydro Power Project while issuing notice to the state government and Government of India through Secretary, Ministry of Power on April 25. 180 MW Baira Siul Hydro Power Project is operated by the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC), which had moved the high court challenging the state government's move to reclaim the project. The high court has also stayed the communication dated March 26, as well as the decision of the Council of Ministers qua the project till further orders. The case is now deferred to May 26. Commissioned in 1980-81, the Baira Siul project was originally set to be handed back to the state government after 40 years of operation, as per the terms of the initial agreement. Following the completion of this period, the state-initiated steps to regain control of the project. NHPC, however, has opposed the move, asserting a claim of perpetual ownership on the grounds of having modernised the plant in August 2021. Cabinet had approved taking over different hydro-electric projects In a recent cabinet meeting, the state government decided to bring several major hydro-electric projects under its control, including the 382 MW Sunni, 210 MW Luhri Stage-1, and 66 MW Dhaulasidh projects, previously allocated to SJVN, as well as the 500 MW Duggar and 180 MW Baira Siul projects allocated to NHPC. Prior to this, during the budget session, chief minister (CM) Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu had reiterated that the state government will take back those hydel projects which do not accept the government's conditions. Sukhu in his reply to a question said in the house that he has made it clear to NHPC and Union power minister Manohar Lal Khattar that if NHPC does not accept the condition of 12%, 18% and 30% royalty and returning the project to the state government after 40 years, all the projects allotted to it will be taken back. HP-Punjab entangled in legal battle for Shanan project Already, a legal dispute is going on between Himachal Pradesh and Punjab over ownership of the 110 MW Shanan power project in Joginder Nagar, Himachal Pradesh. Union power minister Manohar Lal Khattar, during his visit to Shimla in November last year, had clarified that Centre will 'not favour any state'. Himachal chief minister (CM) Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu had requested for Centre's assistance to ask Punjab to hand over the 110 MW Shanan Project to Himachal Pradesh as the 100-year lease with Punjab recently expired. The dispute between the neighbouring states is related to the British-era Shanan Hydropower Project at Jogindernagar of Mandi district in Himachal Pradesh. It was constructed in 1925 under the lease agreement executed between Raja Joginder Sen, the ruler of the then Mandi state, and Col BC Batty, who represented the British government and served as the chief engineer of the undivided Punjab. The project at present is being operated by the Punjab government and the Himachal government has been asking its neighbour to hand over the project to Himachal Pradesh. The Himachal government has been maintaining that the area of Shanan Project was never part of the erstwhile Punjab; therefore, the Punjab Reorganisation Act of 1966 does not apply.
