Elderly & kids with adenovirus history at greater Cov risk: Docs
Kolkata: The elderly with comorbidities, and children, especially those who suffered an adenovirus infection over the last three years, may be vulnerable to the existing Covid strains affecting many across Kolkata, said pulmonologists. Many of these patients suffer from associated respiratory illnesses, like recurring bouts of asthma, frequent bronchitis, COPD, or respiratory distress triggered by chest infections, and are at a greater risk of getting Covid. Children and the elderly form the bulk of Covid patients now admitted across city hospitals. While previously adenovirus-triggered pneumonia or respiratory tract infections would be cured without long-term impact, a large number of those affected since the pandemic experienced recurring infections that suggest a long-term impact, pulmonologists said. A reason could be that immunity against non-Covid viruses dropped sharply post-pandemic, according to CMRI Hospital pulmonology director Raja Dhar. "Since Covid left no room for other viruses, like rhinovirus, meta-pneumo virus, influenza viruses, and other upper respiratory viruses, for almost three years, immunity against these dropped. Also, since people remained at home, infection spread was minimized. Naturally, when these viruses returned post-Covid, the infection they caused was more severe due to the lower resistance. About 5% of these patients have a lasting scar on their lungs, but now we have come back to the previous immunity level," Dhar said. Kolkata experienced a major adenovirus outbreak during the winter of 2022-23, when thousands, mostly children, were affected. "Many of these children have recurring infections, though mild. But the infection has been more severe post-Covid. We saw many deaths during the 2022-23 outbreak that resulted from a more severe and prolonged infection than before. Also, cough, breathing distress, and fever have been recurring frequently among these children over the last two years. Many have required hospitalisation and steroids to recover," said paediatrician Shantanu Ray. RN Tagore Hospital intensivist Sauren Panja said, "The lasting and more severe impact of post-Covid respiratory infections, including adenovirus, might be due to immunological changes in our system during Covid or alterations in the adenovirus strain. There were a couple of major adenovirus outbreaks after Covid, and those infected have turned more susceptible to respiratory disorders, like cough and cold, breathing distress, nasal blockages, frequent bouts of asthma, or COPD. For a section of these patients, these are also triggered by the trauma and mental scars left by Covid." Those affected have been suffering from frequent lung infections, exacerbations of asthma and COPD, and respiratory tract infections, said Charnock Hospital pulmonologist Soumya Sengupta, adding: "These are also being triggered by frequent temperature fluctuations, since the mercury has been on a see-saw ride since last month. So, those who had an adenovirus infection need to be careful. Children have a smaller respiratory tract that saves them from long-term impact. So, while it has been affecting both children and the elderly, it hasn't led to permanent scars or lung fibrosis in most cases." "The elderly, who had adenovirus during that period, too, have turned more vulnerable to COPD, asthma, or respiratory tract infections. While some have fibrosis, though not acute, their resistance has dropped," said Panja.

Minor repairs fine but don't alter heritage character: Panel to school
1 2 3 Kolkata: Officials from the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) and West Bengal Heritage Commission conducted a second inspection of the La Martiniere schools on Sunday afternoon. They informed the school authorities that they would not need to seek permission for minor repairs such as fixing sewerage and drainage pipes, replacing sanitaryware and broken tiles, and changing electrical wires. The officials also requested the school to submit two lists — one detailing short-term repair requirements and another for long-term needs. They assured that the civic body would try to clear these requests expeditiously, provided they did not lead to structural changes or alter the buildings' heritage character. Additionally, the two schools will seek permission to install floodlights on the playgrounds. A KMC engineer and a commission representative visited the school around noon on Sunday, following a Calcutta High Court order for a thorough inspection. This was after the court found a report submitted after an earlier inspection last Monday to be inadequate. On Sunday, the visiting officials checked all the areas highlighted by the school, including seepage from the roof, damp patches, cracks in walls, plaster peeling off the ceiling, and broken tiles. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 75% off installation for LeafFilter LeafFilter Gutter Protection Get Rates Undo A KMC official said while they have asked the school to seek approval for repairs, they will halt all work if any heritage structure is affected. La Martiniere secretary Surpiyo Dhar, who has written multiple letters to KMC over the past couple of months seeking nod to undertake repairs during summer vacation, said the officials were extremely cooperative on Sunday. They appeared to understand the gravity of the situation and seemed eager to help the school carry out the repairs. "The case will be heard in court on June 10. But we expect a go-ahead from KMC even before that, as the court clearly stated that if the urgency of the situation requires it, KMC can give its permission without waiting for a further order from the court," said Dhar. KMC issued a stop-work notice to the school last Nov after an alumni association pointed out that the school had covered its heritage steps, which had names of past students engraved on them, with marble tiles.

Covid symptoms in this round feel like Omicron during pandemic, say doctors
Kolkata: Around 30% of Covid patients in some Kolkata hospitals are showing gastrointestinal symptoms, which were prevalent during the spread of the Omicron variant in early 2022. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Many elderly patients admitted during the current cycle suffered a quick worsening of comorbidities, which may have been triggered by the virus, say doctors. There has also been a spurt in the number of relatively younger patients without any co-ailment. Even though severe cases remain low, several private hospitals have seen a spurt in admissions, leading to an extension of their isolation wards. While initial symptoms of the current surge were restricted to fever and cough, a sizeable section of patients has now started suffering from loose motion and mild diarrhoea — a prominent symptom of the third Covid wave that struck three-and-a-half years ago. "While these symptoms, too, remain mild, it now indicates the presence of the virus if detected in conjunction with fever and cough. Many had gastrointestinal symptoms during the Omicron wave, and it could be possible that since the current strain Jn.1 is believed to be an Omicron variant, symptoms are getting repeated," said CMRI Hospital pulmonology director Raja Dhar. The hospital has seven Covid patients admitted. While most are still elderly with comorbidities, a significant number suffered worsening of their ailments quickly, added Dhar. Charnock Hospital has admitted four Covid patients over the last three days. "They had a persistent fever and nasal symptoms that made them get tested. Their comorbidities are mild, and they are stable. There has been a major spurt in mild positive cases, which don't require admission. Patients now cut across all age groups and are not necessarily just the elderly with comorbidities," said Charnock Hospital pulmonologist Soumya Sengupta. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Manipal Hospital, Mukundapur now has two Covid patients. "While we received elderly patients till a few days ago, the virus is now affecting all age groups. A vast majority have mild symptoms that don't require admission, which has kept it manageable for us so far," said Manipal infectious diseases physician Sayan Chakrabarty. Peerless Hospital has four Covid patients admitted, including a seven-month-old girl and her mother. It also has a 52-year-old man and a 72-year-old elderly patient, both of whom are stable. With two Covid patients currently admitted, BP Poddar Hospital has intensified safety measures. "Both presented with lower respiratory tract infection (LRTI) and mild-grade fever. One is a 72-year-old female and the other a 65-year-old male," said Supriyo Chakraborty, group advisor of BP Poddar.
