Poornachandra students perform eco-theatre on streets
Students of Poornachandra Public School, Channarayapatna, marked World Environment Day with a dramatic public awareness campaign. Dressed as the earth, sky, rivers, wild animals, and trees, students took to the streets in a symbolic march, warning of the dangers of deforestation, pollution, and unchecked urbanisation. They staged a street play at the town bus stop, urging citizens to grow trees and protect nature for future generations. Their metaphor-driven performance portrayed a planet suffering from plastic overload and vanishing greenery, and received heartfelt appreciation from the public. TIRUNELVELI: The death toll in the suspected food poisoning incident at a private home for senior citizens and persons with mental health issues in Sundarapandiapuram rose to four, after one of the inmates, whose condition was critical, died at the hospital on Friday. Around 10 inmates requiring intensive care were shifted to Tirunelveli Medical College Hospital (TvMCH) from the Tenkasi District Government Headquarters Hospital (GHQH), where nearly 30 others underwent treatment. The deceased was identified as Dhanalakshmi (80). A senior police officer said the shelter home was sealed on Thursday. The owner of the home, Rajendran, was remanded in judicial custody on Friday. Death toll rises to four in Tenkasi shelter food contamination case
Tenkasi: The death toll in the suspected food contamination incident at a private shelter home in Sundarapandiapuram near Tenkasi rose to four on Friday. A 70-year-old woman, identified as Dhanalakshmi, who was undergoing treatment for severe digestive complications at the Tenkasi govt hospital, died without responding to treatment on Friday. Meanwhile, eight more residents — Ram Lakshmi, Esakkiammal, Mariammal, Mumtaz, Karuppayi, Selvaraj, Kaliyappan, and Meenatchi Sundaram — who showed worsening symptoms, were shifted to the Tirunelveli Govt Medical College Hospital from Tenkasi GH for advanced care. Revathi Balan, dean of Tirunelveli GH, said all eight are currently stable and receiving treatment, but one of them, Mariammal, was admitted to the intensive care unit. "They are being closely monitored due to their age and underlying health conditions," she said. Sources at the Tenkasi GH said early symptoms and preliminary lab reports indicate a possible infection, most likely caused by contaminated food. "All concerned departments — food safety, health, and police — will be submitting their findings to the district collector in a day," said a senior doctor. "Many of those affected were already in a weakened state, with low immunity, which prompted the decision to shift several critical cases to Tirunelveli," the doctor added. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Trade Bitcoin & Ethereum – No Wallet Needed! It may be recalled that three other residents — Shankar, 48, Murugammal, 45, and Ambika, 40 — died earlier this week after allegedly consuming meat-based food served at the Annai Nalvalvu Trust shelter home on Sunday night. The shelter, which houses more than 60 residents, including the elderly and those with mental disabilities, is run by Rajendran. He was detained by the Tenkasi police on Thursday, and investigations are ongoing. Follow more information on Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad here . VKSA campaign to boost farmer-scientist engagement from May 29
Yagantipalle (Banaganapalle): The Viksit Krishi Sankalp Abhiyan (VKSA), a 15-day agricultural outreach campaign aimed at enhancing farmer-scientist interaction and boosting farm productivity, will be held across Nandyal district from May 29 to June 12, said Dr. G. Dhanalakshmi. Speaking to The Hans India on Wednesday, Dr. Dhanalakshmi said the campaign is jointly organised by the Ministry of Agriculture, Government of India, and the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR). It is being implemented by the Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Yagantipalle, with field-level support from the State Agriculture and allied departments. Dr. Dhanalakshmi, Senior Scientist and Head of KVK Yagantipalle, noted that the campaign focuses on preparing farmers for the 2025 Kharif season through scientific interventions and field-level engagement. As part of the initiative, teams from KVK and the Indian Institute of Millets Research, along with officials from the Agriculture Department, will visit all mandals in Nandyal district, covering 135 villages. The teams will directly engage with farmers to raise awareness on crop management, modern agricultural technologies, organic farming, value-added products, and livestock development. A key highlight will be drone-based spraying demonstrations, supported by the Indian Farmers Fertiliser Cooperative Limited (IFFCO), in selected villages. These aim to educate farmers on using drone technology for efficient input application. During the campaign, scientists will conduct on-site inspections, diagnose pest and disease infestations, recommend remedial measures, and formulate research plans to address emerging challenges. Lead and innovative farmers will also assist in knowledge-sharing efforts. Dr. Dhanalakshmi urged farmers to participate actively. 'This initiative is designed to empower farmers with practical knowledge and tools to improve productivity and sustainability,' she said. The VKSA campaign represents a significant step toward transforming traditional farming through scientific collaboration and community engagement.
