LG allows leeway for Kasturba Nagar redevelopment; 856 trees to be affected
New Delhi: Lieutenant governor VK Saxena, through a gazette notification, granted an exemption under the Delhi Preservation of Trees Act (DPTA), 1994, to facilitate the construction of residential accommodation at Kasturba Nagar Phase-II over an area of 8.90 hectares. This could lead to the felling or transplantation of 856 trees. While a tree officer, under the provisions of the DPTA, can only consider an application for felling or transplantation of trees limited to a one-hectare area, the gazette exempts the entire section of the DPTA to overrule the area limitation clause. Though the notification is not permission to fell the trees, it grants the tree officer authority to consider if the required permission could be granted for the entire exempted area. This exemption, granted under Section 29 of the DPTA, allows CPWD to seek permission from a tree officer in the Delhi forest department to fell or transplant 856 trees. The move was criticised by Delhi Congress on Sunday. The gazette notification was issued on June 13 but made public on Sunday. It stated that it invokes Section 29 of the DPTA to bypass the area restriction in "public interest." "… in public interest, (the LG) exempts an area of 8.90 hectares… from the limitation of maximum one-hectare area under sub-section (3) of Section 9 of the said Act for the construction of General Pool Residential accommodation," the notification says. This provision has been utilised a few times recently, including for the New Delhi Railway station redevelopment (115.88 hect), Common Central Secretariat buildings, and a northeast Delhi flyover. The exemption allows the tree officer to review the previously ineligible application. With required exemption, the deputy conservator of forest (south division), acting as the tree officer, will evaluate the application according to DPTA guidelines, Delhi Preservation of Trees Rules, 1996, and relevant court directives. The gazette mandates that the tree officer must exercise careful consideration to minimise tree impact. Attacking BJP, Delhi Congress president Devender Yadav said, "This is a double blow to both the environment and social justice."

AAI Unveils Mega Incentive Plan To Restart International Flights At Port Blair
Last Updated: This new scheme will be in effect for the first three years of international flight operations, a crucial period that often determines long-term sustainability. To promote international flight connectivity, the Airports Authority of India (AAI) has approved a mega incentive scheme at 13 airports which includes Veer Savarkar International Airport at Port Blair in Andaman and Nicobar Islands, an official said here. This scheme will be applicable for first three years of the operations to bridge the viability gap for the initial phase, which is a very crucial phase for the sustainability of operations. Speaking to PTI, Port Blair Airport Director Devender Yadav said, 'As per this scheme for the first year 100 per cent UDF (User Development Fees) which is Rs 709 per departing passenger will be waived off to the airline. For the second year, the incentive will be 85 per cent of UDF and for the third year incentive will be 65 per cent of UDF." Considering the flight load of 180 passengers, the incentive scheme has the potential of savings of Rs 128 lakh per flight for airlines, which is a significant amount to bridge the viability gap, he said. Veer Savarkar International Airport was designated as an international airport on April 1, 2007 and the first scheduled international flight was started on November 16, 2024 by AirAsia from Kuala Lumpur to Port Blair. But due to less passenger load the international operations were not viable for airlines and international flight operations were stopped from April 10, 2025. 'We have learnt a lot of lessons from the previous international flight operations by AirAsia from Kuala Lumpur to Port Blair. Now, we are better prepared for sustainable international flight operations with this incentive scheme and readiness to swing international cargo operations. I would like to thank the UT administration for jointly taking up the viability of international flight operations and achieving a significant breakthrough in it," he added. First Published:

It may be noted that Veer Savarkar International Airport got the maximum incentive among all the listed 13 airports," the Airport Director said. "Our duty to question pain faced by people": Delhi Congress slams govt over 'unfulfilled' promises, deteriorating law and order
New Delhi [India], May 31 (ANI): Delhi Congress President Devender Yadav on Thursday criticised the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led government in Delhi for failing to deliver on key election promises and for the 'deteriorating' law and order of the national capital. Yadav further said that it is the party's 'duty' to question the pain faced by the people of Delhi as the BJP-led government completes 100 days here. 'We are constantly asking this question to the government of Delhi that you promised to give 2,500 rupees to women, where is that? You said that the cylinder will be given for five hundred rupees, where is that? You said that cylinder will be given in Holi, where is that?' the Delhi Congress president told ANI. Decrying the law and order situation in the national capital, he claimed that multiple rape, murders happen here, with Delhi becoming a 'drug capital.' 'Today, six rapes happen in Delhi (daily), murders happen, there are three robberies, with chain snatching we don't even know. Delhi has become the capital of drugs today. Where are you? You also have a central government and the corporation, but have you done any work for the betterment of Delhi? If you keep talking schemes, keep holding meetings, then it is not going to do good to the people of Delhi,' he said. 'With the completion of 100 days (of Rekha Gupta-led Delhi government), it is our duty to question the pain faced by the people of Delhi,' he added. He claimed that Congress used to 'rule the hearts of people,' referencing the 15 years of Sheila Dikshit as Chief Minister, adding, 'We used to rule in the hearts of the people of Delhi before, we have a place in the hearts of Delhi. We have been raising our voice continuously in the past and will continue to raise the issues in the same way.' Yadav further attacked former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, saying that after losing elections, he had 'completely disappeared.' He claimed that while Congress is helping the people, AAP is running away from elections. '(Arvind) Kejriwal has disappeared from Delhi like it is said that 'gadhe ke sar se seengh gayab ho jate hai' (like how horns disappear from a donkey's head). Law and order deteriorate in Delhi, and the opposition is not angry. Who will raise their voice? Congress does. The prices of milk rise in Delhi, or water fills in Delhi, Congress is on the streets helping, while AAP has disappeared. After three consecutive years in the corporation, today they run away from the elections,' he said. Earlier on Friday, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta praised her cabinet ministers for their efforts and affirmed her government's commitment to development. 'We are very happy and satisfied that the rights the people of Delhi deserve are being delivered with full dedication by the government. And surely, as Viksit Bharat progresses, Viksit Delhi will also move forward and witness significant development,' CM Gupta said. The results of the Delhi Assembly elections, announced on February 8, saw the BJP secure a decisive mandate by winning 48 seats. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) was pushed into the opposition with 22 seats, while the Congress failed to win a single seat for the third consecutive time. (ANI
