Local changemakers bring big-screen joy to Alexandra
For a few hours on Friday evening, the township of Alexandra shed its usual shadows of hardship, poverty, and crime, and came alive with community spirit. Just near the intersection of Thoko Ngoma and Far Eastbank streets, children gathered for a movie night hosted by The Eye Pictures 1920, in partnership with the Stepping Tennis Foundation. Read more: The enduring legacy of Kings Cinema The event saw little ones treated to the hilarity of Despicable Me 4, an experience curated with care. 'I played it because it's funny. I have watched the movie, it made me laugh, and I wished to enjoy it with others,' said Siyabonga 'Makwera' Twala, of The Eye Pictures 1920. It was the fourth screening in this initiative by The Eye Pictures 1920, but the first one in collaboration with the Stepping Tennis Foundation. Twala's inspiration traces back to a cherished memory from 2010, when he and his friends would watch cartoons together on a big screen at a park in Eastbank. 'Coming back from school we would go there and watch Cartoon Network. We first saw Phineas and Ferb there.' It was this nostalgia that sparked his mission to recreate those moments, offering the children of Alexandra their own version of that joy. Stepping Tennis member Sibusiso 'Scuba Ray' Shongwe resonated with the vision. 'Siyabonga wanted to give back to the less privileged. It is not everyone who knows this cinema setting. So, my friend wanted to bring it to the township.' Shongwe, who is a long-time supporter of the initiative, added that since he works with children, he also wanted to give them something magical. In a township often overlooked because of its challenges, a projector, and a bit of heart from two local changemakers, turned an ordinary street into a place of unity and laughter. The Best Action Movie Of 2025 Just Hit Netflix's Top 10 List
Den of Thieves 2 Lionsgate Netflix's $320 million The Electric State is currently plummeting down its Top 10 movie list, now at #5 and dropping, passed up by a number of licensed movies from Despicable Me 4 to Kraven The Hunter to now, a new action movie that so far, is the best of the year. That would be Den of Thieves 2: Pantera, which may sound like a cheesy straight to DVD offering (well, straight to streaming now), it's a surprisingly good sequel to a surprisingly good original which was clearly successful enough to warrant this second movie. Though yes, kind of cheesy. The concept of the original Den of Thieves was Gerard Butler as a rule-breaking LA Sheriff attempting to stop a heist crew, led by Pablo Schreiber's Ray Merrimen, who would go on to star in the awful Halo show, but despite that, he's excellent here. Since his breakout role in 300, Gerard Butler has been carving out these somewhat schlocky but solid action movies, including the 'Has Fallen' series, but now, simultaneously, Den of Thieves. Den of Thieves 2 Netflix The first film was good, better than its 43% critic score indicated back in 2018, but now both its critic and audience score have improved since the original, a fresh 63% and a 79% respectively. Seven years later, they've refined the concept. The movie brings back Butler, of course, but also the first film's O'Shea Jackson Jr. In what may be something of a cost-saving measure, they are the two biggest names in the cast, and the series didn't feel the need to add a bunch of A-listers to attract more attention. The highest profile new addition would be Salvatore Esposito, known best for nearly a decade of the series Gomorrah. Here's the official synopsis of Den of Thieves 2: One problem Netflix has is that no, you cannot watch the original Den of Thieves on the service right now, and would have to head over to Peacock or Amazon for that. Licensing! So much fun. Given that we're only a quarter of the way through the year, no, I would not expect Den of Thieves 2 to stay the best action movie of the year, even if yes, I would say it beats out Captain America: Brave New World so far. My guess is it won't be better than Thunderbolts, for one. But it's a great, Heat-channeling movie that a lot of people will probably enjoy, as is the first, if you haven't checked it out yet. Cinemark Rides ‘Moana 2,' ‘Wicked' to Record-High Q4 Revenue of $814 Million
Cinemark enjoyed the fruits of a strong end to 2024, driven by hits like 'Wicked' and 'Moana 2' to beat revenue projections with $814 million in Q4. That is 27% above the $638 million grossed in Q4 2023, a quarter in which a precious few hit films like 'Wonka' kept up a theatrical market that suffered from strike-related delays. It also beats Zacks Research's projections of $797 million in revenue. More of the topline stats below: EPS/Net Income: Cinemark reported net income of $51.3 million for the quarter, equating to adjusted earnings per share of $0.33. That's down from the $1.19 per share for Q3 driven by 'Despicable Me 4' and 'Deadpool & Wolverine' but is an improvement from the $18 million net loss in Q4 2023 and loss per share of 15 cents. Attendance: Attendance was 51 million, up from 40.6 million from Q4 2023. In the U.S. alone that number was 32.6 million, up from 26.2 million a year ago. Admissions revenue hit $406.5 million for the quarter, up 26% from Q4 2023. Concessions: Concessions revenue was $313.4 million, an increase from $243 million in Q4 2023. The company hit an all-time high food and beverage per cap of $5.96. 'On better-than-expected industry performance, Cinemark delivered outsized box office proceeds and solid overall financial results driven by an intense focus on disciplined operational execution and the sustained impact of our strategic initiatives,' CEO Sean Gamble said in a statement. On these strong earnings, Cinemark has reinstated their annual cash dividend at $0.32 per share, which Gamble said 'marks another major milestone in our recovery from the pandemic and reflects our ongoing commitment to creating long-term value for all shareholders.' The quarter got off to a slow start after the historic collapse of Warner Bros.' 'Joker: Folie a Deux,' which only grossed $58.3 million domestically. That left Sony's 'Venom: The Last Dance' as the top grossing release of the month with $139 million, with support coming from the long legs of the September DreamWorks release 'The Wild Robot.' But fortunes turned around in November thanks first to the breakout success of Universal's 'Wicked,' which contributed $432 million to the quarter as it became the highest grossing Broadway adaptation of all time. That was immediately followed by Disney's 'Moana 2,' which shattered the Thanksgiving weekend record and contributed $404 million to the quarter. While the holiday season did not yield a 'Star Wars'-level hit, Disney's 'Mufasa' and Paramount's 'Sonic the Hedgehog 3' brought the year to a smooth landing with a combined total of $279.6 million. Another Paramount title, 'Gladiator II,' was another. The post Cinemark Rides 'Moana 2,' 'Wicked' to Record-High Q4 Revenue of $814 Million appeared first on TheWrap.
