Daga Hospital Leads Sickle Cell Fight, Treats 1,500+ Patients, Screens 10,000 Women

Nagpur: Daga Memorial Women's Hospital, under the state public health department, is at the forefront of combating sickle cell anaemia, a genetic blood disorder, aligning with the National Sickle Cell Anaemia Elimination Mission 2047. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The hospital registered over 1,500 patients who receive regular treatment, including hydroxyurea, and screens approximately 10,000 pregnant women annually, with 5% identified as carriers of the sickle cell trait. World Sickle Cell Awareness Day, observed on June 19, holds special significance in India, particularly in high-burden regions like Nagpur. This year's theme, 'Global Action, Local Impact: Empowering Communities for Effective Self-Advocacy', underscores the importance of community-driven efforts. Daga Hospital medical superintendent Dr Dilip Madhavi said the screening is critical for early diagnosis. "Every pregnant woman registered at the hospital undergoes mandatory sickle cell testing. With around 1,000 women screened monthly, the hospital identifies carriers to prevent the disease's transmission," he said. Civil surgeon Dr Nivrutti Rathod said soon a centre for genetic testing, including amniocentesis (a prenatal test) and chorionic villus sampling (CVS), would be set up at Daga to further enhance prenatal screening. Dr Sanjay Deshmukh, in-charge of haematology centre at Daga Hospital, said sickle cell disease (SCD) involves inherited disorders affecting haemoglobin, leading to sickle-shaped red blood cells. These cause severe pain, anaemia, and heightened infection risks, significantly impacting patients' quality of life. For severe cases, bone marrow transplant remains primary treatment but is prohibitively expensive, costing up to ₹30 lakh, he said. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Dr Deshmukh said through CSR funding from Western Coalfields Limited (WCL) and support from Sankalp Foundation, children under 12 eligible for transplants receive up to ₹12 lakh financial aid. He added that Daga Hospital will soon host a free HLA typing camp, a prerequisite for bone marrow transplants, in collaboration with Sankalp Foundation. Besides Dr Deshmukh, the Daga team includes counsellors Sanjeevani Satpute and Leena Borkar, and lab technicians Prachiti Walke and Rohit Jaiswal. Meanwhile, Gautam Dongre, secretary of the National Alliance of Sickle Cell Organizations (Nasco), urged mandatory sickle cell testing before marriage to prevent the pain and loss caused by the hereditary blood disorder. Sharing his experience as a parent unaware of his carrier status until his child's diagnosis, Dongre emphasised that timely testing and counselling could spare families immense suffering. He called for blood tests during pregnancy to ensure a sickle cell-free India for future generations.

Maharashtra Sahitya Parishad threatens protest against three-language policy

The Maharashtra Sahitya Parishad, along with the head of the Maharashtra Language Consultation Committee Laxmikant Deshmukh and other Marathi organisations, threatened to protest against the state government's three-language policy for primary education. The organisations strongly opposed the amended June 17 government resolution (GR) that makes Hindi or any other Indian language compulsory from class 1 onwards, along with Marathi and English. According to the new GR, Hindi will be the third language taught from Class 1 onwards. However, any student can opt to learn any other Indian language as their third language as well. If over 20 students wish to learn a language other than Hindi, a teacher will be provided for that language. If the number of students is less than 20, they will be taught the language through online mode of learning. At a press conference on Wednesday, Milind Joshi, chairman of Maharashtra Sahitya Parishad, said, 'In Maharashtra, we had to protest to make Marathi a compulsory language in education, but now we have to have meetings to ask the government to not make Hindi compulsory… Many Marathi organisations have gathered to write a letter to the CM to cancel the GR released today.' Deshmukh said, 'The Chief Minister has said that a third language other than Hindi can be chosen, but we do not accept a third language. We do not want it… We know how teachers struggled online during COVID-19. Teaching a third language online is not okay and it won't happen as well. Indirectly — due to Hindi teachers being available as it is already being taught in Class 5 — it will be imposed. We don't oppose Hindi from Class 5, we just do not accept it being taught from Class 1. Otherwise, it is being taught for the last 20-30 years from Class 5.' Deshmukh also claimed that the Modi government's New Education Policy 2020 does not mandate teaching a third language from Class 1. The letter, signed by Joshi and Deshmukh, said that according to child psychology, learning three languages at a young age is extremely difficult. It also said due to the lack of teachers, in many cases Class 8 students aren't able to read English and Marathi texts from Class 2. It added that in such a low quality teaching environment, teaching another language will be even more distressing for the student. Next, the letter raised the question of 'Hindikaran' of Maharashtra, and that even cities like Nashik and Pune have 'become Hindi'. It said teaching a language other than Hindi will not be possible in most cases due to a lack of qualified teachers, and the quality of online education is known for being poor. It stated Hindi is 'attacking' Marathi and erasing the latter's identity. The letter also stated, 'No other state is teaching three languages from Class 1, then why are we imposing this on Maharashtra?' Joshi stated that the organisation was a non-political entity related to literature and culture, but that they would have to come out and protest on the streets if the government's decision is not taken back. Thane man convicted of sexually assaulting 6-year-old girl; sentenced to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment

THANE: A special court in Thane under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act convicted a 48-year-old man from Wagle Estate for the sexual assault of a six-year-old child, sentencing him to two decades of rigorous imprisonment. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Judge DS Deshmukh also ordered the convict, Anwar Babu Sheikh, to pay Rs 10,000 in fines, which will be awarded to the survivor as compensation. The court's decision came after the prosecution successfully proved all charges under the POCSO Act and Indian Penal Code. Prosecutor Sandhya Mhatre presented evidence showing that the April 2022 incident occurred when the child was playing near her home. The accused, a neighbour, enticed the child into his residence where the assault took place. The case came to light when the child disclosed the incident to her mother, prompting an immediate police complaint. The prosecution's case was strengthened by the child's testimony, medical evidence, and witness accounts. The trial featured testimony from ten prosecution witnesses, including the young survivor. A crucial witness, a neighbour, confirmed seeing the child enter and exit the accused's home, supporting the survivor's account. Constable Sushant Shelar provided consistent support to the prosecution throughout the legal proceedings. In delivering the verdict, Judge Deshmukh noted that the prosecution established guilt beyond reasonable doubt, justifying the conviction and substantial punishment under POCSO provisions. The judge pointed to the importance of the survivor's courageous testimony and the corroborating medical reports in securing this conviction. Judge Deshmukh referred the case to the District Legal Services Authority for additional compensation consideration.

Pune's GIPE demands administrator for Servants of India Society

In a major escalation of the ongoing dispute, the Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics (GIPE) has formally demanded that the Servants of India Society (SIS), its parent body, be placed under a neutral administrator. GIPE has also urged the police to name SIS president Damodar Sahoo as a co-accused in an ongoing case involving alleged financial irregularities. At a press conference on Thursday, GIPE staff members accused Sahoo and ousted secretary Milind Deshmukh of misusing crores of rupees from the institute's accounts for personal legal expenses, payments to relatives, and irregular staffing. 'All this has been done while invoking the name of Gopal Krishna Gokhale, the society's revered founder,' officials said. In a statement, GIPE claimed that SIS has been draining the institute of its resources for years without contributing a single rupee to its functioning for over two decades. 'Internal documents and letters show that Sahoo and Deshmukh directed GIPE to pay their personal legal bills, salaries of their private staff, and make contractor payments unrelated to the university. Just last week, Sahoo directed GIPE's bank to freeze staff salary accounts, severely disrupting operations,' the statement said. GIPE has called for immediate suspension of the SIS leadership and the appointment of a neutral administrator through court intervention. It has also sought a time-bound investigation by the police and the charity commissioner, a full audit of past financial transfers, and steps to prevent further misuse of the institute's resources. The University Grants Commission (UGC), which governs GIPE, has reportedly instructed the institute to halt any further financial transfers to SIS and to submit records of all past dealings. Meanwhile, an FIR has been registered at Deccan Police Station against Deshmukh under Sections 34, 406, 409, and 420 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), for alleged misuse of over ₹2 crore in institutional and government funds. 'We submitted a letter to the police a couple of days ago, demanding that Sahoo be made co-accused in this financial scam. Both Sahoo and Deshmukh are also accused of attempting to form an illegal advisory committee to interfere in GIPE's functioning, despite the institute already having a UGC-mandated legal governing body,' said Vishal Gaikwad, GIPE's officiating deputy registrar. Joining Gaikwad at the press conference were administrative officer Kedar Tapkir and assistant officer Kedar Kale, who is also officer on special duty to the vice-chancellor. They said several senior SIS members, including vice-president Atmanand Mishra, have submitted affidavits accusing Sahoo and Deshmukh of gross mismanagement. GIPE officials alleged that the duo recently held an 'illegal meeting' to induct their sons and grandsons into the society, in what they described as an attempt to create hereditary control over the trust. 'We remained silent out of respect for Gopal Krishna Gokhale's legacy. But what we are witnessing is nothing short of betrayal. Sahoo and Deshmukh used GIPE's reputation and resources for personal gain, froze staff salaries, and harassed our vice-chancellor. This is not just mismanagement — it's a criminal conspiracy,' Gaikwad said. In response to the allegations, Sahoo said, 'I have been working for the society for over 40 years. I had written to Chancellor Sanjeev Sanyal requesting his intervention in resolving this issue to carry forward Gokhale's legacy. All the allegations against me and SIS are baseless. We are fully cooperating with the police and demand a fair investigation.'
