Steelers Defensive Tackle Derrick Harmon Named to Preseason All-Rookie Team
Steelers Defensive Tackle Derrick Harmon Named to Preseason All-Rookie Team originally appeared on Athlon Sports. As coach Mike Tomlin said before the draft, the Pittsburgh Steelers had an "extreme urgency" to upgrade the defensive line, and that's exactly what they did. Advertisement By passing on a quarterback at No. 21 overall, general manager Omar Khan solidified the Steelers' defense-first mentality. Oregon defensive tackle Derrick Harmon's selection might've given Pittsburgh an easy transition for when Cameron Heyward decides to hang up his cleats. Harmon was just named to Preseason All-Rookie Team as selected by writer Gennaro Filice. "Typically, this is the time of year when NOTHING is guaranteed. Coaches constantly stress that rookies -- no matter how highly they're drafted -- must earn their keep before even thinking about filling a starting slot. Apparently, though, the Steelers aren't doing that whole song and dance with Harmon. Instinctive and versatile with a well-rounded skill set, the first-round pick is the kind of defensive lineman who thrives in Pittsburgh. Advertisement "Harmon racked up an eye-popping 55 pressures in 2024 -- 12 more than any other FBS interior D-lineman, per PFF -- and now he gets to learn from a 15th-year pro with a doctorate in disruption, Cam Heyward." After rookie minicamp, voluntary OTAs and mandatory mincamp, Harmon is already impressing his coaches. "He goes out there with the ones," defensive line coach Karl Dunbar said last week, via "He's our left starting defensive tackle. You can write that." Harmon led the FBS last season with 34 quarterback pressures and as a defensive tackle, was second with a 10.7 percent pressure rate. Advertisement Last year, the Steelers' run defense collapsed en route to an 0-5 finish to the season, including the Wild Card loss to the Baltimore Ravens. Harmon should help prevent that this upcoming season. 'Speed of the Game!' Steelers First-Round Draft Pick Reveals Biggest Adjustment
'Speed of the Game!' Steelers First-Round Draft Pick Reveals Biggest Adjustment originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Every player who makes the transition from college to the NFL will have to make adjustments to their game. Advertisement It's not different than the jump from high school to college - maybe just more intense. Even players who come from major college programs have some period of adjustment. And Pittsburgh Steelers first-round draft pick and defensive tackle Derrick Harmon is no different. As the team wrapped up mandatory minicamp on Thursday, Harmon still has yet to see true NFL action, but he already knows what his biggest adjustment will be while making the jump to the NFL. "Biggest difference for me is really just learning the speed of the game, " Harmon told reporters. "Hardest thing, the speed of the game is way different than college." Advertisement The Steelers will now break for six weeks and can rest before training camp starts. But Harmon has other plans. The Detroit native plans on working out in Dallas this summer in anticipation of training camp in Latrobe. "They mostly said it was going to be hot," Harmon said of training camp." That's pretty much it. They said it was gonna be hot. So I'm ready for it. Being in Texas heat, just getting ready for that." Head coach Mike Tomlin is excited to have Harmon on board and thinks he "has Steeler DNA." "He has Steeler DNA for us, man. It starts inside and upfront, and this is a guy that's capable of dominating that space versus the run and the pass," Tomlin said. "And so we're really excited about having him. We weren't interested in considering trading away from him and really excited about getting him in here and getting started." Steelers Already Name Rookie a Starter: ‘He's Really Wired In'
Pittsburgh Steelers defensive lineman Derrick Harmon at OTAs on May 28, 2025. -- Ed Thompson / Steelers Now The Pittsburgh Steelers have already named one of their rookies a starter for the 2025 NFL season. The Pittsburgh Steelers kicked off mandatory minicamp on Tuesday, but the team has already named one of its rookies a starter. Advertisement Steelers defensive line coach Karl Dunbar revealed rookie defensive tackle Derrick Harmon is already running with the first-team defense. 'He goes out there with the ones,' Dunbar said. 'He's our left starting defensive tackle. You can write that.' Harmon, 21, was Pittsburgh's first-round pick (No. 21 overall) in the 2025 NFL Draft after wreaking havoc in opposing backfields for the Oregon Ducks. In 2024, the 6-foot-4 1/2, 313-pound defensive tackle recorded 45 tackles, five sacks and a pair of forced and recovered fumbles. (AP Photo/Lydia Ely) Harmon is likely being relied upon to take the place of veteran Larry Ogunjobi, who was released in March. And the Steelers are already seeing what they hoped to from the rookie at the beginning stages of the offseason program. Advertisement 'You can tell whether or not they're in shape, and I think he's done a good job of bringing himself into camp in some kind of shape,' Dunbar said. 'I think he's really wired in.' At this point, the only major concern with Harmon seems to be centered around his shoulder. A MRI at the 2025 NFL Scouting Combine showed a partially torn rotator cuff and a torn labrum. However, general manager Omar Khan and head coach Mike Tomlin dismissed any worries regarding the issue. 'We wouldn't have picked him unless our medical staff was comfortable with it,' Khan said. Harmon reiterated a similar sentiment, too. Advertisement 'I don't know man, I'm fully healthy ready to go,' he said. 'I don't have no concerns. I'm ready to get to work.' In his three seasons of college football, Harmon did not miss a single game due to injury. He played 38 games. First-Round Pick Derrick Harmon Thought Steelers Were Going to Pass on Him
First-round defensive tackle Derrick Harmon thought the Pittsburgh Steelers were going to pass on him in the 2025 NFL Draft. The Pittsburgh Steelers used their first-round pick (No. 21 overall) in the 2025 NFL Draft on Oregon defensive tackle Derrick Harmon, but that isn't how he thought things were going to play out on night one. Advertisement Harmon recently revealed he strongly believed that the Steelers were going to pass on him for a much bigger position of need. 'No, I thought y'all were going to come quarterback first. I did. I kept seeing it,' Harmon said on the latest episode of 'Not Just Football with Cam Heyward.' 'So once I seen [I was picked], I was surprised. But I was happy because I came on my 30 visit and coach [Mike] T. and Omar [Khan], they was just nothing but love and showing nothing but love to me, and telling me, 'If you there, we going to get you.' But you never know how the draft will go because the draft can go either way.' Pittsburgh did have some intriguing quarterback options on the board at No. 21 in Mississippi's Jaxson Dart (No. 25 to New York Giants), Louisville's Tyler Shough (No. 40 to New Orleans Saints and Alabama's Jalen Milroe (No. 92 to Seattle Seahawks). Advertisement However, the Steelers needed to address their aging defensive line as well. That's exactly why Heyward never had any doubt Harmon would end up in the black and gold. 'Oh, I knew,' Heyward said. 'They were talking to me. They were like, 'They like this one,' and so, it was if you were going to be available to us. And I knew we weren't taking a quarterback.' Pittsburgh eventually took a quarterback with its sixth-round pick (No. 185) in Ohio State's Will Howard, but snagging Harmon was always the ideal scenario. In 2024, the 6-foot-4 1/2, 313-pound defensive tackle recorded 45 tackles, five sacks and a pair of forced and recovered fumbles at Oregon.
