Wayne Rooney drops major hint over football management future after Man United legend's disaster spells with Birmingham and Plymouth

Wayne Rooney has dropped a major hint over his future as a football manager on the back of his disastrous stints at Birmingham and Plymouth. The Manchester United icon has led four sides since his retirement in 2021, but has struggled to make any of his spells work, and remains without a club since leaving his last role. Rooney, 39, left Plymouth after just 25 games in charge with the club bottom of the Championship on New Year's Eve. He won just five of his matches, but departed despite being a popular figure at the club. Before that, he had worked at Birmingham under minority investor Tom Brady, signing a three-and-a-half-year deal with the then-Championship club. They were sixth at the time, and was sacked less than three months into the role with his team 20th in the table. Both Birmingham and Plymouth were relegated in the year Rooney led them. He also had stints at DC United in the United States and Derby County, but has played a part in relegations at all three of the English clubs he has coached. Now, the former England captain has given an update on his future after stunning back on the field at Old Trafford in Soccer Aid at the weekend. The Manchester United legend has since returned to punditry duty with Amazon Prime Video Speaking to talkSPORT, Rooney said: 'Obviously just doing some TV work at the minute, so that's what I'm doing. 'I'm enjoying it. So, that's where I'll be.' Since leaving Plymouth, he has gone back into punditry, working with Amazon Prime Video following brief stints at the like of Sky Sports and TNT Sports. Rooney was lauded after opening the scoring in front of the Stretford End at Old Trafford in Soccer Aid, before ex-Lionesses star Toni Duggan doubled the home side's lead. Jermain Defoe bagged a brace for England after the break but the second half belonged to pantomime villain Carlos Tevez. The Tevez show - which saw the former Red Devil, who swapped Manchester red for blue and Manchester City, score four goals - ended with him clattering into Aaron Lennon late in the game in a desperate — and successful — effort to deny the ex-Spurs winger an equaliser. Referee Rebecca Welch showed Tevez a yellow card, although the crowd demanded a red.

Three English clubs 'interested' in ex-Rangers star Lawrence

The former Rangers midfielder left Ibrox after three years, having struggled to become a key player due to injuries. The 31-year-old Welshman is now a free agent and looks set to return to the English second tier, where he has previously impressed. Lawrence was a regular for Derby County over five seasons before joining Rangers. The Daily Post suggests that Wrexham, Lawrence's hometown club, are keen to offer him a deal after their promotion from League One. The ambitious Welsh side, backed by Hollywood owners, appear eager to strengthen their squad for a fourth consecutive promotion push. They recently signed former Rangers and Livingston striker Ryan Hardie. At the same time, West Brom and Coventry are also considering a bid for the versatile midfielder. Lawrence has also previously had loan spells in the Championship with Yeovil Town, Rotherham, Blackburn, Cardiff, and Ipswich. The latter have already been linked with a potential swoop for their former loanee.
