The cost of being: A political adviser finishing their master's degree
As part of our series exploring how New Zealanders live and our relationship with money, a political adviser and master's student describes their financial situation. Want to be part of The Cost of Being? Fill out the questionnaire here. Gender: Female. Age: 23. Ethnicity: Pākehā. Role: I work full time as a political adviser and am a master's student. Salary/income/assets: My salary is $75,000 a year. My living location is: Urban. Rent/mortgage per week: $240 per week, not including other expenses like power and wifi. I live with two other flatmates and we split everything equally. Student loan or other debt payments per week: My student loan is pretty high because I didn't work for most of my undergrad and have also added to it with the master's degree I'm currently finishing up – I get paid monthly so it's about $550 out of each pay check. Typical weekly food costs Groceries: I would say I spend about $100 a week on supermarket trips – I'm a terrible cook and get decision paralysis in the aisles, so it tends to be on snacky stuff and a lot of beverages. My shelf in the fridge is always empty! Eating out: I eat out quite a bit on weekends (mostly at cafes) – I would estimate I spend about $30 a week on that. Takeaways: I get takeaways during the week if I feel like I need a big dinner which I usually don't have the ingredients to cook – maybe $50 a week? Workday lunches: $30 a week. Usually lunch for me is just a protein bar from the supermarket, but sometimes I branch out and go to a café or out with co-workers. Cafe coffees/snacks: $15 per week (not counting my lunchtime protein bars as a snack – that's a meal!). Other food costs: None. Savings: I put anywhere from $500 to $1000 a month into my savings account (depending on outgoings). I would love to get more adept at investing, because my savings account is starting to have what feels like a useless amount of money to just be sitting there. I worry about money: Sometimes. Three words to describe my financial situation: Growing, impulsive, fortunate. My biggest edible indulgence would be: Trying new cafes at the weekend – and smoked Havarti cheese! In a typical week my alcohol expenditure would be: Unfortunately after a few weeks of sobriety I am back on the Courtenay Place grind. $50 a week. In a typical week my transport expenditure would be: Nothing, because I walk everywhere. Even in winter. I estimate in the past year the ballpark amount I spent on my personal clothing (including sleepwear and underwear) was: I think it would be about $1500, I got a new job last year so had to get some more professional office stuff, but I like to shop vintage/ second hand so a lot of my clothes are from Depop or stores along Cuba St. My most expensive clothing in the past year was: I think it was a pair of Doc Martens I bought a few weeks back for $360. Still mustering up the courage to break them in. My last pair of shoes cost: $280 for some nicer running shoes because my old ones hurt me. My grooming/beauty expenditure in a year is about: Probably about $2000 (embarrassing!): $300 a year on hair-related activities, I replace my (very simple) skincare routine every few months which costs about $50 dollars, don't get through makeup too quickly so probably about $100 a year on that, and get my nails done monthly for about $100. My exercise expenditure in a year is about: My gym costs $7 a week (so $364 a year?) – which I really make the most of and use almost every day. My last Friday night cost: Nothing, unless you include the cost of my degree because I was working on my thesis the whole evening. Most regrettable purchase in the last 12 months was: A pair of shoes I made the mistake of buying online, which didn't fit and which I forgot to return. Most indulgent purchase (that I don't regret) in the last 12 months was: New bedding. I love my bed. One area where I'm a bit of a tightwad is: Socks. Hate buying socks. But other than that, I'm not sure I'm a tightwad at all – maybe with having people pay me back, but I feel like that's fair. Five words to describe my financial personality would be: Fun, I could die tomorrow. I grew up in a house where money was: A frequent and stressful subject because my dad owned his own business and my mum always worked hard too. I felt a lot of anxiety about it growing up because of the negative ways it was discussed, but I was always fortunate to go to great schools and never had to worry about having food on the table. The last time my Eftpos card was declined was: I don't think it has. I always know how much money is in my spending account. In five years, in financial terms, I see myself: Student loan paid off (I hope I pray!), on a higher salary, renting somewhere nicer. It's not on my radar for the next while to even think about buying a house. I would love to have more money for: International travel! I want to do Euro summer at least once. Describe your financial low: Just last year, when I was doing an unpaid internship and tutoring at uni for extra money – I never felt like I had enough, had basically no savings, wouldn't eat much, and would have about $30 to my name some weeks after rent and bills. That's why they will be adventuring their way through summer in a dress made from denim, a fabric that's as practical as it is playful—especially when said dress is constructed from a repurposed pair of jeans. Haikure and Marques'Almeida are masters of the jean dress, while Gabriela Hearst offers up ladylike styles in clean-wash chambray. If she were alive today, we think famous Sagittarian Jane Austen would very much approve of the latter. A dress that celebrates corsetry will satisfy even the most indecisive of Librans, while appealing to their need for balance and harmony. Of course, one cannot write about corset dresses without talking about Vivienne Westwood. Do like stylish Libra Bella Hadid, who has a penchant for vintage Westwood, and find a pre-loved piece on eBay or Depop, styling it with a pearl necklace and exaggerated platforms. Alternatively, layer a bustier from Sézane or Reformation atop a crisp cotton dress. The Taurus woman's favorite place is nestled upon a cloud-like sofa, so when she does go out, she wants her outfit to be equal parts comfortable and chic. Enter: the maxi dress, ideally minimally decorated, in an earthy hue and crafted from a good-quality fabric (Tauruses prize luxury). Khaite, Posse, and St. Agni all reign supreme when it comes to the minimal maxi. Keep everything else suitably pared back; think leather flip flops, a chunky beaded necklace, and a logo-less bag. Have you ever seen a hair out of place on Zendaya, Cameron Diaz, or Beyoncé? Well, that's likely because they're Virgos—a sign known for meticulous attention to detail. We're giving the shirt dress to the Virgos, mostly because we know they'll ensure it's crisply ironed and never coffee-stained. New York designers have long loved a shirt dress, namely Tory Burch and Kate Spade, whose signature styles call for ballet flats and a ladylike bag. Leos are no wallflowers, which is why we suggest they adorn themselves with the most eye-catching blooms. Floral dresses come in endless iterations, but we're currently partial to an oversized bouquet. Magnified roses or peonies reinvigorate a simple shirt or midi dress, and make it perfect for the summer season's slew of events. If splashing out, Erdem is the natural choice—the designer's full-skirted dresses call to mind a nostalgic elegance that Leos will love. Otherwise, brands like Mango, Ro&Zo, and Rixo are advocates for petal power, whatever the season. This charismatic air sign is the perfect candidate for the sheer trend, and it's no secret that a naked dress makes for quite the conversation starter. Consider a sheath style in organza, chiffon, or mesh—as favored by Sportmax, Alaïa, and Khaite—layering it with a bandeau bra and big knickers or a neutral-colored slip, depending on how daring you feel. Cancerians don't like surprises, and there is familiarity and comfort in the calf-grazing length of a midi dress. You may prefer to eschew this season's floaty, frothy numbers for something decidedly more prim and proper. As seen at Miu Miu and Self-Portrait, one could imagine these structured shifts being worn by Cancerians including Margot Robbie, Pamela Anderson, and the late Princess Diana. Need more inspiration? Here is an outfit we are wearing on repeat: Susa Musa's sheer, polka dot skirt; a 1990s-inspired, fitted shirt or tee; and barely-there mules. The diligent, attention-focused Capricorn will likely appreciate the uniformity and symmetry of a striped dress. Never ones to follow the crowd, they may depart from stripes' nautical associations by opting for something deconstructed and asymmetric, as seen at Proenza Schouler. While it may be all-too tempting to opt for a boating shoe, a square-toe ballet flat or sneakerina style is pleasingly unexpected—perfect for a trailblazing Capricorn. Free People is a great destination for ruffled fancies, including bloomers, which our Piscean may wish to layer beneath a semi-sheer smock. Sensual Scorpio knows that lace-trimmed, silk nighties are far too alluring to reserve for the bedroom. Instead, she is looking to spring 2025 catwalks for inspiration and wearing a mere wisp of a dress with chunky wooden platforms and a vintage bag (as seen at Chloé) or something more 1960s-tinged, like knee-high socks and loafers (as decreed at Miu Miu). Angelina has wasted no time maximising the profitability of these social media shopping trips with her brother-in-law. Depop is throwing a giant free fashion block party in Soho this weekend
One perk of living in New York are the fabulous free events running all summer long, like bustling street fairs and epic outdoor concerts. But what's a NYC summer without a block party? On Saturday, sustainable shopping app Depop will celebrate our city of irreverent style and one-of-a-kind lewks with a blowout bash in Soho. From 1pm to 7pm, the Depop Block Party will fill the streets with top-notch second-hand fashion, live music, lots of food, and community vibes on June 14. Head to 126 Crosby Street to score second-hand gems from notable resellers, including '90s and Y2K attire by Soulful Threads, Pawneshoppe womenswear, men's collections at Fareri and ChrisFinds, as well as cool kids' apparel curated by Glo2Sick, and of course accessories with NikiAngel. Beyond the clothing racks, block party guests can groove to DJ sets, pop into a subway-themed photobooth, customize merch using a heat press, and visit a Depop Newsstand for surprises. There will even be a dedicated kids' activity space. We all know shopping works up your appetite, which is why plenty of NYC-style pizza, smash burgers, and classic Mister Softee cones will be on hand for purchase. But if you download the Depop app and flash it at the wristband station on Houston Street, you'll be able to snag free snacks from said food trucks. What's more, the trendy marketplace has partnered with Housing Works to build a Depop Souvenir Shop set inside the nonprofit's store on Crosby Street, in addition to making a donation towards its HIV/AIDS advocacy and charities. A week later, Cosmopolitan will drop its collaborative collection with the resale retailer, featuring hand-picked items from magazine editors as well as an exclusive Cosmo collection of merchandise. This one-of-a-kind shopping event on June 21 will be hosted by Cosmopolitan Editor-In-Chief Willa Bennett and include creative experiences like crafting and photography in addition to all the vintage hunting. 'Across June, we're making circular fashion more visible, accessible and engaging for New Yorkers through a mix of media, IRL experiences and digital shopping,' Depop's Interim CEO Peter Semple said in a press release. 'We'll be showing up where culture, communities, creativity and commerce intersect …. we're excited to celebrate and contribute to the many kinds of style and self-expression that have their home in New York.'
