Villanova University Names Christine Kelleher Palus, PhD, Senior Vice Provost for Academics

VILLANOVA, Pa.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Villanova University has announced the appointment of Christine Kelleher Palus, PhD, as Senior Vice Provost for Academics, effective August 1, 2025. A member of Villanova's faculty since 2006, Dr. Palus has extensive experience in academic leadership roles and most recently served as Dean of the University's College of Professional Studies. Dr. Palus holds the rank of professor in the Department of Public Administration. 'Dr. Palus is a highly respected and accomplished member of the Villanova community. Throughout her tenure, she has consistently embodied the values that define Villanova, and her outstanding academic record speaks volumes,' said University President the Rev. Peter M. Her new role will include critical consultation and leadership for key academic functions of the University including academic programming, promotion and tenure, academic policy, academic grievances, and faculty governance, hiring, retention, recruitment, retirement and development. In her seven years as Dean of the College of Professional Studies, Dr. Palus led all aspects of the College, including strategic planning, program development, admissions and enrollment, student support, faculty affairs, financial planning and budgeting, operations, fundraising and corporate partnerships. She oversaw a diverse suite of campus and online offerings, including degree completion programs, non-credit professional programs, credit-bearing certificates, high school student programming and enrollment, among others. Prior to joining the College of Professional Studies in 2018, Dr. Palus served as Dean of Graduate Studies in Villanova's College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. In this role, she had oversight of more than 20 graduate programs, including two PhD programs and several online professional programs. Dr. Palus previously was chair of Villanova's Department of Public Administration and director of the Master of Public Administration program. Her academic career began at the University of Michigan-Dearborn, where she was an assistant professor. Performance management in crisis: can South Africa's governance rise to the challenge?

A few days before Mother's Day I came across a meme that encapsulates the spirit of my mom. It said: 'For Mother's Day my mom would like the activism of her youth to not be for nothing.' I let out a soft chuckle to myself as I shared the meme with my family, knowing the no-nonsense firecracker my mom was in her days as a young political activist, which she continues to be now in her sixties. She is a woman who does not suffer fools and is uncompromising in her pursuit of what is right and equitable. I hosted Mother's Day this year and had my parents and brother over for lunch. The conversation turned to the state of politics in our country and globally as we lamented the general sad state of things. Chief among the problems is the absence of visionary and accountable leadership, which is needed to guide us out of this dark chapter of political regression. Our conversation became spirited as we turned our attention to the lack of performance management and monitoring and evaluation in our country's governance. Dr John Bester, a senior lecturer in the Department of Public Administration at North West University, defines performance management as a 'systematic approach for improving service delivery through evidence-based decision-making, continuous organisational learning as well as a focus on accountability for performance to achieve improved results for the public'. It is hard to believe that we have a Department of Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation to do just this, when scant evidence exists of its work and what it has achieved since its establishment in 2010. Ironically, this department was introduced by our most calamitous president, Jacob Gedleyihlekisa Zuma. According to the department, its vision is to be a catalyst in achieving national development outcomes and impact in society.​ Among its values it lists: being a learning organisation; being a dynamic and development-oriented organisation, which continuously strives for excellent performance standards in serving the citizens; being implementation-focused and results-oriented; creating an enabling environment for staff to grow and be innovative; promoting integrity, honesty and ethical conduct among public servants; being disciplined, professional and committed to the fight against corruption; and practising the Batho Pele principles. Although there may be glimpses of this in the work of dedicated civil servants daily battling the odds to try to keep our government functional, evidence of the consistent application of these values is missing as our country limps from crisis to crisis. Our government departments, parastatals and Chapter 9 institutions could certainly all use a shake-up in fostering a performance culture that will ferret out those not meeting their primary objectives of serving the people of South Africa according to standards of excellence and with integrity. The question remains, is our minister of monitoring and evaluation bold enough to decisively meet the imperatives of her department? Banned group Hizb ut-Tahrir holds first open rally in Bangladesh

Dhaka: Hizb ut-Tahrir, a radical organisation banned in Bangladesh since October 2009, carried out its first open rally in Dhaka on Friday. Joined by thousands of its members, the group began the rally from the north gate of Baitul Mukarram National Mosque after Friday prayers. The rally was titled "March for Khilafah." Dhaka Tribune reported that a clash erupted between police and members of the banned organization near the Baitul Mukarram National Mosque in Dhaka. Law enforcement intervened to stop the procession, leading to a violent altercation. To disperse the crowd and regain control, police fired tear gas shells and sound grenades. Demonstrators scattered temporarily but they later regrouped and attempted to continue their procession, reported Dhaka Tribune. Hizb ut-Tahrir advocates for the establishment of a global Islamic Caliphate, or Khilafah, which it claims would unite all Muslim-majority countries under a single Islamic government. Earlier in February, Nazmul Ahsan Kalimullah, Professor, Department of Public Administration, University of Dhaka, admitted that Islamist groups in Bangladesh have got more freedom after Sheikh Hasina left the country. Kalimullah, while speaking to ANI, said that several banned Islamist outfits are active in Bangladesh and are even holding press conferences. "Islamists, they have succeeded in carving out larger space in the public domain. And Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has strengthened its position. Hefazat-e-Islam movement has become more strong. Personalities such as Peer of Charmoni has gained prominence. Even Hizb ut-Tahrir, they are an outlaw organization, but they're visible. They are coming up with leaflets, posters and also in different places they are waving their flags, they're marching in the streets even convened press conferences. So officially this outfit is not a legal entity till now and their media coordinator is behind the bar. So, officially the ban is still there but in reality they are functioning," he said. Hizb ut-Tahrir remains a banned organization in Bangladesh, with all its activities and demonstrations deemed illegal.
