Three Major French Investors Reject Deep Sea Mining
Three major French financial institutions, including two of the country's largest banks and the state's public investment arm, have announced their rejection of deep sea mining during the United Nations Ocean Conference (UNOC) last week in Nice. The three institutions are: BNP Paribas - France's largest and Europe's second largest bank. BNP Paribas confirms it does not invest in deep sea mining projects due to the intrinsic environmental and social risks involved. Crédit Agricole - The second largest bank in France and the world's largest cooperative financial institution. Crédit Agricole stated it will not finance deep sea mining projects until it has been proven that such operations pose no significant harm to marine ecosystems. Groupe Caisse des Dépôts - The public investment arm of the French Government, which also holds a majority stake in La Banque Postale. The Group has pledged to exclude all financing and investment in companies whose main activity is deep sea mining, as well as in deep sea mining projects. Amundi Asset Management also made a statement that it seeks to avoid investment in companies 'involved in deep sea mining and/or exploration'. This now brings to 24 the number of financial institutions who exclude deep sea mining in some form. Deep Sea Mining Campaign Finance Advocacy Officer Andy Whitmore says: 'This is a truly significant outcome from UNOC. Until recently no French financiers had matched their Government's position calling for a ban. This UN Ocean Conference, co-hosted by France, was the perfect opportunity for the most important national players to step up and be counted' These financial announcements are a sign of global concern pushing itself on to the agenda. World leaders renewed calls for a global moratorium on the dangerous industry, with French President Emmanuel Macron denouncing it as 'madness', with UN Secretary-General António Guterres responding to recent announcements from President Trump by warning that the deep sea 'cannot become the Wild West.' Slovenia, Latvia, Cyprus and the Marshall Islands also announced their support for a moratorium or precautionary pause, bringing the number of like-minded countries to 37. Andy Whitmore concluded 'the events at UNOC have added further momentum to the financial establishment rejecting deep sea mining. The recent unseemly rush to mine is creating push-back from the financial world, as much as from governments and civil society.'

Legendary Edinburgh chippies remembered by locals ahead of National Fish & Chip Day
Ahead of National Fish & Day 2025 (Friday, June 6), we asked Edinburgh residents for their memories of the city's famous Brattisani's chippies. It's a story which begins well over a century ago. The original Brattisani's, on Church Lane in Stockbridge, was opened in 1889 by Giuseppe Brattisani, who was part of the first wave of Italian families to settle in the city, after immigrating from Parma in the 1870s. When Giuseppe enlisted with the Italian army during the First World War, his wife took over the running of the chippy. Mercifully, he survived the war, and on returning to Edinburgh decided to open a new fish and chip shop – the Deep Sea, on Union Place, which he later sold to the Crolla family. After the demolition of Union Place in 1970, the Deep Sea moved to Antigua Street, where it still serves fish and chips to this day. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Next to take over the family business was Giuseppe's son, Joseph, who earned the nickname of 'Mr Chips'. At one time or another, he ran five restaurants in Auld Reekie. His sons, Charles and Joe, would then follow in their father's footsteps. Brattisani's chippies were loved by generations of families in Edinburgh. Charles Brattisani opened his first shop in 1961, lending the family name to what became a hugely-popular chippy on Henderson Row. Joe, meanwhile ran another thriving fish and chip shop on Brougham Place in Tollcross. In 1966 and 1970 respectively, the brothers Brattisani opened branches in Haymarket and Newington. Both those chippies survived for over three decades, and arguably the most famous of all the Brattisani-run emporiums. The branch on Newington Road, in particular, is the stuff of local legend. For many people brought up in the city, no hard day's swim at the Royal Commonwealth (Commie) Pool was complete without a visit to this chippy, which was memorable for its red seating booths. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Sadly, all good things must come to an end. The Haymarket chippy shut its doors in 2002, with the Newington branch serving its last fish supper just two years later. It's a case of gone but never forgotten for Edinburgh residents. We asked our readers for memories of Brattisani's famous chippies – and hundreds of you responded. Below are some of those recollections. David Turnbull wrote: 'My dad told us he was taking us out for a meal. Mum thought it would be somewhere posh so we all got dressed up - he took us to Brattisani's at Haymarket. Fish suppers, bread and butter and a pot of tea – and we loved it.' Lesley Gallier recalled: 'Starting my nursing training we stayed in the nurses home round the corner from there in Newington. 1977. We never went hungry . Amazing. Happy days.' Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Scott Wilson said: '32p child bus fare from Gracie to Newington for the Commie, then Brattisanis after!' Dougie Ewart wrote: 'Used to come down from the Commy pool with all my mates and then into Brattisani's for a chippy. I always got sausages and they would give you a few chips if you got a single, with salt & sauce. While your mates who ordered, sometimes you would miss the bus. But it would stop at traffic lights, and you had to run over the road, bolt to the traffic lights, get over the road, and catch it as it stopped around the corner. Laughing as we ran along the road with supper in hand trying to catch the bus... great chippy great times.' Moira F Gray remembered: 'Brattisani's at Haymarket after ice skating at Murrayfield on a Friday night. Best ever chippy! Neil Tomlinson said: 'I would always go there after swimming, I also took my daughter once and she listened to some stories. I also loved the tomato chippy sauce on my chips.' Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Elizabeth Stanton recalled: Coming out of the Commonwealth Pool starving and heading straight for the best chippy ever. Sitting on the bus eating our supper heading home. Years later, taking our children and sitting in the booths reminiscing.' Last, but not least, Samantha Brattisani chipped in with some kind words for Evening News readers, saying: 'It was my dad, Joe Brattisani, who owned the shop. Dad and family (Maria, Eric, Charles and George Brattisani) that ran the shops for many years. Everyone I know, including me, loved going to the Commonwealth Pool then to the Newington chippy. That has never been forgotten – thanks to all that take the time to comment.'

Another customer also said they had received compliments in the dress and said: "This dress is absolute perfection. The fabric and embroidery quality is excellent. It is heavy and well made, but still very comfortable. "I love the pockets, and the length is just right, hitting just above the ankle (I am 5'4" for reference). I got several compliments the first time I wore it!" While another reviewer had this to say: "This dress is delightful and I feel delightful wearing it! The fabric is comfortable and forgiving. Truly my new favorite closet item." But the dress wasn't popular for everyone. One shopper said: "I was so excited to try this on, was already planning to get both the teal and the pink. The colour (teal) was amazing, however that's the only positive. "The material is much too heavy for summer, it seems more suited for autumn. The cut and flares from waist down makes it a little frumpy also. "I just don't understand how anyone could wear this on a sunny summer day without being hot. I bought from a retailer".

Oregon seal pup stabbed multiple times as NOAA seeking to track down person of interest
An elephant seal pup suffered "multiple stab wounds" in an attack at an Oregon beach, prompting the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to launch a search for a person of interest. The NOAA's Office of Law Enforcement said this week that the incident happened on March 16 in Neskowin, Oregon, along a stretch of shoreline in front of the Proposal Rock Condominiums. "While the young elephant seal survived, it sustained multiple stab wounds. The Marine Stranding Team monitored and evaluated the animal before relocating it," the NOAA said in a statement. The agency released a sketch of a person of interest, described as a White male "Approximately 5 feet 10 inches tall, with a standard build, black and white hair, a groomed beard, and a large gap between his front teeth." 'Odd-looking' Deep Sea Fish Washes Up On Beach, Surprising Locals The NOAA, citing a witness, added that the individual was wearing a "black cap with a flat front and a logo depicting an orange four-track excavator with the word 'Timber'." Read On The Fox News App "We are also seeking information about the owner of a vehicle that may be associated with the person of interest," the NOAA also said, describing it as a cluttered-looking dark blue 1990s Dodge or Chrysler van that had the rear passenger window on the driver's side covered in plastic. Pet Raccoon Caught With Meth Pipe In Its Mouth When Cops Pulled Over Ohio Woman Following the attack, the seal's wounds were healing, it had grown to about 300 pounds and there were no signs that the stabbing was going to have "lasting effects," Michael Milstein, a spokesperson for NOAA Fisheries West Coast region, told The Associated Press. The seal that was stabbed likely left its mother very recently and was on its own to learn to hunt, Milstein said. Once it had grown a bit more, it would have likely made its way back to breeding areas around the Channel Islands off Southern California. The NOAA said "Harassing, harming, killing or feeding wild elephant seals is prohibited under the Marine Mammal Protection Act" and "Violations can be prosecuted civilly or criminally and are punishable by up to $100,000 in fines and up to 1 year in jail per violation." The Associated Press contributed to this report. Original article source: Oregon seal pup stabbed multiple times as NOAA seeking to track down person of interest
