Recognition for local volunteers in West Lothian
The hard work of people who go above and beyond to support others in their communities have been recognised by the Bathgate based Voluntary Sector Gateway at their first ever Volunteer Awards The event last week shone the spotlight on individual and team achievements with nominees representing a wide range of organisations and causes across the county. Volunteer of the year title went to Jim Watson of West Lothian Council Advice Shop and Macmillan with runner up, Loretta Black of The Boghall Drop-In Centre. Nancy Baker of Carers of West Lothian won this year's Dedication and Commitment Award, with Elaine McCallum of the No Limits Sports Club as runner up. Members of The Barn community cafe in Livingston won the team award, with the Team Jak Foundation as runners up. Ray Fallan, Volunteering & Governance Development Officer at Voluntary Sector Gateway West Lothian, said: 'It was a brilliant day with a great buzz in the room. We're so proud to recognise the volunteers who give so much of their time to make West Lothian a better place. 'Their dedication is inspiring, and this event is our way of saying thank you.' Caring volunteer receives award for her dedication and long service at West Lothian event
Nancy Baker was recognised as Volunteers' Week was marked Carers of West Lothian marked Volunteers' Week with a warm gathering to celebrate the incredible contributions of its dedicated volunteers. The event in Livingston brought together volunteers, staff, trustees and ambassadors to recognise the vital role volunteers play in supporting unpaid carers and disabled people across West Lothian. From gardening and reflexology to peer support, counselling, and helping at information stalls, volunteers are at the heart of everything Carers of West Lothian (CoWL) does. Long-time volunteer Nancy Baker received the Dedication and Commitment Award at the first-ever West Lothian Volunteer Awards Ceremony, hosted by Volunteer Gateway West Lothian. Nancy received the award, which honours long service, high volunteering hours, and consistent dedication, from Alison Kennedy, Depute to the Lord-Lieutenant of West Lothian. 'We are so proud of Nancy,' said Volunteer Coordinator, Pat Henderson. 'She truly embodies the spirit of volunteering. 'These volunteers do so much to support our service users and give freely of their time and expertise, it's lovely to get the chance to celebrate with them.' Volunteers shared stories of their experiences, with many expressing how rewarding it is to give back to the community. The celebration included refreshments and time to connect and reflect. Volunteers also took part in a quiz on their phones and there was much laughter and happy chattering as they celebrated the Carers of West Lothian volunteering community. Mike Niles, CEO of Carers of West Lothian, said: 'We simply couldn't do what we do without them. 'We have over 40 volunteers giving their energy, compassion, and commitment and making a real difference every day.'
