Barrier rogue Whinchat can bounce back to his best in 2025 Civic Stakes at Royal Randwick

Jockey Jay Ford has seen the best and worst of Whinchat and knows the right version of David Pfieffer's bold frontrunner will have him right in Saturday's Listed $200,000 Civic Stakes (1400m) at Royal Randwick. Whinchat gave a reminder of his bad boy behaviour when Ford last jumped aboard the talented sprinter, with the son of Russian Revolution playing up in the gates and missing the start by six lengths. • It's not the first time Whinchat has played up at the races but the talented barrier rogue had been on his best behaviour in recent times with significant dividends. He impressively won three times in the city last preparation, all with Ford aboard, and first-up finished a narrow runner-up to The Instructor in the Listed Luskin Star Stakes before his unfortunate mood swing. 'He has come a long way but you never know what you are going to get with him,' Ford said. 'From where he was two years ago, he has come a long way but there is always a chance if he has a bee in his bonnet, what happened last start can happen. 'He is not bombproof by any means but had a good little run there for a while where he was well behaved and manageable. 'That was the old Whinchat there the other day so we will see what mood he turns up on Saturday.' • ' You dream about getting to 100 wins': Baker eyes historic milestone Stewards sent Whinchat back to the trials after his barrier mishap where the gelding won his heat over 1050m. He gets another opportunity to snare a Stakes victory in a competitive addition of the Civic Stakes which has drawn a capacity field of 16. Whinchat will jump from the outside gate in the feature but Ford doesn't see it as a negative. 'He is pretty one-dimensional so draw is not a real worry for him,' he said. 'It's probably a positive with less time in the barrier for him. 'It's a good race for him, I suppose it just comes down to how quick we have to go early because there is a bit of speed in numbers there. 'They are out there with us so hopefully he can behave and jump clean. 'He takes 100m to get going so outside gates also help because a couple of the others might be quicker in the first 50m or so and he just takes 100m to get rolling and then he can come across and build, flow and get in rhythm.' Dominant! Whinchat was just far too good out in front today. @DavidPfieffer — SKY Racing (@SkyRacingAU) January 31, 2024 Whinchat isn't the only on pace runner drawn out with Willaidow one to his inside and Iknowastar also jumping from a double digit gate. 'Both Willaidow and Iknowastar have similar styles to Whinchat but the only problem with Whinchat is he is not really adaptable,' Ford said. 'If he can't find himself in front, he starts to over race and pull hard. 'It upsets the apple cart for him. 'He is a free flowing horse that likes to run but it will be a matter of how much work we have to do to get him in a favourable for him.' WHAT A FINISH! 😮 The Instructor wins on the line to beat Whinchat in the Luskin Star Stakes! 🙌 @GaiWaterhouse1 — SKY Racing (@SkyRacingAU) May 17, 2025 Joe Pride 's Headley Grange a firm $3.20 favourite. Headley Grange's main rival in early betting was Warnie however trainer Ciaron Maher has instead elected to send his galloper to Queensland to tackle the Listed Eye Liner Stakes at Ipswich. Ford is chasing his second Civic Stakes after first winning the race aboard the Chris Waller -trained Liapari in 2018. The Group 1 -winning hoop has five rides across the Civic Stakes card, with long odds chances Rogue Bear ($71) and Time Quest ($81) in race 6 and race 10 respectively. He kicks off his day with veteran campaigner Dr Evil ($34) in the Midway Handicap (1600m) while Everlasting Stars ($19) makes up part of a heavy-handed Danny Williams assault in the TAB Highway Class 3 Handicap (1200m).

Gosford preview: Trainer David Pfieffer is banking on two key factors to land Our Little Star in the winners circle

Trainer David Pfieffer feels an unsuitable tempo played against Our Little Star first-up but a drop in grade and distance along with an ideal draw can play right into her hands. The four-year-old raced keenly in fourth spot before finishing a two-and-three-quarter length third behind The Unique Star in a three and four-year-old Benchmark 64 Handicap over 1100m at Warwick Farm. 'It was a good run first-up. The slow tempo probably just caused her to get up on the bridle a little bit too much midrace,' said Pfieffer. 'She still hit the line well and looks to be in for a good preparation.' Our Little Star drops back to a Midway Class 1 Handicap over 1000m, a distance she has placed in each of her three runs over. ✨ Our Little Star breaks through for her first win for Jason Collett and @DavidPfieffer! @hawkesburyrc â€' SKY Racing (@SkyRacingAU) February 12, 2025 The Form: Complete NSW Racing thoroughbred form, including video replays and all you need to know about every horse, jockey and trainer. Find a winner here! 'Coming back to 1000m should help her settle better and Gosford usually generates a bit of tempo,' he said. 'It's a decent drop in grade so she should be very competitive.' In the same race, Pfieffer also saddles up Explosive Torpido. The five-year-old mare showed she is building towards another win with a length second to Russian Zarina at Hawkesbury before a length third behind Pratt and Harlex at Wyong. 'I wanted to try and split them but it was the right race for the pair. 'The draw looks like it will be the deciding factor. 'They are in good order, they look good, will present well and hopefully fight out the finish. 'I'm hoping they can run the quinella.' Pfieffer's third and final runner for the day is Miss Firestar who will make her race debut in the Nova Coast Services Pty Ltd Super Maiden Handicap (1200m). The daughter of Press Statement showed good early speed in her Warwick Farm barrier trial on April 29 to be among the leaders early before easing round the bend. Kerrin McEvoy kept her under a hold in the straight in finishing sixth behind Columbia Blue. 'She has improved from last time in work and trialled alright the other week,' Pfieffer said. 'The 1200m will suit her better than the 790m trial. Ultimately, she will want seven furlongs down the track but this a good starting point. ðŸ'¥ Explosive Torpido takes the opener at @newcastleraces_ today! @DavidPfieffer @AlyshaCollett â€' SKY Racing (@SkyRacingAU) August 8, 2024 'I think there will be a couple of scratching from this race which will help. ' Josh Parr gets on-board and he should give her nice ride and give us some nice feedback. 'I think she could herself running into the placings.' Pfieffer also has two runners at Randwick on Saturday with Oh Diamond Lil in the Benchmark 78 Handicap (1400m) and Whinchat in the Listed Civic Stakes (1400m). Oh Diamond Lil was impressive winning first-up at Scone at the stand-along meeting on May 17 before fading to ninth behind Thunderlips at Randwick on June 7. 'Jay (Ford) got on her for the first time last start and it didn't look like they suited each other well but also, I may have been too easy on her after Scone,' he said. 'You are worried about the big trip up there and back plus the effort to win. 'Maybe I had he her a fraction too fresh the other week. 'I really think she can bounce back.' Whinchat almost made it a double for Pfieffer when he was beaten a half-head by The Instructor in the Listed Luskin Star at Scone. He then cost himself when he reared in the gates at Randwick two weeks ago when second last behind Headley Grange. 'He was sent back to the trials by the stewards where he performed satisfactorily and is back to the races this weekend. 'He will do his thing. Bounce out of the gates and go forward.' â– â– â– â– â– Scone horseman Rod Northam is looking for promising gelding Speedy Henry to make use of his nice barrier to get back to winning form. The son of Hellbent made a winning start to his career at Dubbo last December before a spell and kicked off this campaign with a Class 1 win at home but has had mixed fortunes sin his three runs since. Speedy Henry was making ground late when sixth in a Highway at Randwick on April 26 before a third to Tasoraay at Scone and a safely held sixth behind Hammering Away at Dubbo last time out. 'He's still leaning and is still very green. He's field shy and timid among horses,' said Northam. 'When horses go around him, he baulks off them and he's been shuffled back in a couple of his races where you would think he'd hold a spot. Speedy Henry runs away with Race 5 at Scone for @rodnortham! â€' SKY Racing (@SkyRacingAU) April 14, 2025 'The key to him is getting him away and up near the speed and try to not get crowded.' Northam is looking to jockey Reece Jones to have Speedy Henry in a forward position from barrier 4 in the Class 2 Plate (1200m) where he gets in well with 57.5kg. 'He has drawn nicely so if he can begin well and put himself somewhere handy, not cluttered up on the fence, he should be able to race really well,' he said. Grandini was rewarded for her consistent form when she broke through for her first win at Dubbo on June 6. The daughter of Toronado had finished in the top four in eight of her first 10 starts. 'She has been a great money-spinner for her owners,' Northam said. 'I was quite confident going into that race. I thought her first-up run was good. 'She just needed a good ride which she got from Leeshelle and they got the job done nicely.' The four-year-old is striving to make it back-to-back wins when she contests the Class 1 Handicap (1400m). 'Hopefully she takes a bit of confidence out of that win. 'There looks to be nice pace in this race so she should be able to camp just off the speed and be strong late again.' Northam has been pleased with the progress of Bawnaglen who will appreciate stepping up in distance in the Maiden Plate (1400m). 'If Reece can be positive and have him handy, he should be strong late,' he said.

Rocks or Diamonds? Classy mare tests trainer David Pfieffer's patience

Oh Diamond Lil might be a slow maturing mare but she just happens to be an extremely fast racehorse. Trainer David Pfieffer spoke about the two very different sides of Oh Diamond Lil on the eve of the Asahi Super Dry Handicap (1400m) at Royal Randwick on Saturday. 'She is probably an owner's nightmare and a dream at the same time,'' Pfieffer explained. 'Because she has been such a slow maturer, she has taken a long time to grow into herself and I still don't think she is there yet. 'Although she is nearly a five-year-old, she's still not fully matured but her owners have been patient and they are reaping the rewards now.'' Oh Diamond Lil, a daughter of Coolmore's champion racehorse and sire So You Think, has only had nine starts but she has already won four races and only once has she missed a top three finish. At the Scone stand-alone meeting three weeks ago, Oh Diamond Lil resumed with a powerful win over 1300m and Pfieffer was confident his mare would handle the class rise at Randwick. Even the likelihood of a heavy track surface doesn't overly concern the trainer. Randwick was rated a heavy 8 late on Friday. 'Ideally, I would like to see it between a soft 6-7 as she is only second-up, but I think it will be an improving heavy,'' Pfieffer said. 'She is a horse that puts a lot into her work so she naturally gets herself fit anyway. 'The way she raced last start it was like a horse that is wanting more ground and the soft-heavy track is going to make it more of a test. 'But she's in great form and is improving every preparation.'' ðŸ'Ž Oh Diamond Lil gets the perfect run and wins at Scone! @KPMcEvoy | @DavidPfieffer — SKY Racing (@SkyRacingAU) May 17, 2025 In latest TAB Fixed Odds betting, Oh Diamond Lil is challenging for favouritism at $3.90 behind the Ciaron Maher-trained Federer at $3.50. Pfieffer is taking two horses to the Randwick meeting with Whinchat lining up in the Singapore Pools Handicap (1300m). Whinchat resumed after a long spell at Scone last month and ran a blinder to beat all but The Instructor in the Listed Luskin Star Stakes (1300m). 'It would have been a nice feat to get a win first-up with Whinchat after such a long break,'' Pfieffer said. 'But he's pulled up well and is going great. Jay (Ford) galloped him during the week and said the horse is ready to fire. 'The barrier (10) probably works out well for him and he will appreciate the improving track, too. 'He has raced well on wet tracks in the past and 1300m second-up with three weeks between runs looks ideal.'' • 'I'll be moving to Vaucluse!': It's all in the name for Sargent filly â– â– â– â– â– Private trial shows Pride gelding on song for Stradbroke "Nash is certainly giving him a good sound out." A solid gallop for @PrideRacing star Private Eye under @nashhot as he leads all the way in a 900m trial at Rosehill on Friday beating Starman with the winner's stablemate City Of Lights third. @tabcomau — Racing NSW (@racing_nsw) June 6, 2025 Private Eye, winner of $11.9 million prizemoney, tuned up for next week's Group 1 $3 million Stradbroke Handicap by taking out a Rosehill barrier trial on Friday. The Joe Pride -trained Private Eye began brilliantly out of the barriers and went straight to the front in the 900m heat and comfortably held Starman and City Of Lights at bay. This was Private Eye's fourth barrier trial in recent weeks as Pride prepares the gelding for an audacious first-up Stradbroke bid at Eagle Farm on June 14. â– â– â– â– â– Baker in hot form in country Jack Baker, the 3kg claiming apprentice, is starting to make a name for himself on the NSW country circuit. Baker, 21, is in only his second season of riding but scored his 35th career win and his first at the provincials on Hot Bandit at Kembla Grange earlier this week. The young apprentice rides next at Sapphire Coast on Sunday on the Luke Pepper -trained Fifty Five Mustang. For racing historians, Jack Baker's name might be familiar – and with good reason. The apprentice shares his name with the jockey who rode the legendary Phar Lap to his very first win as a two-year-old at Rosehill in 1929. The great Phar Lap only won once in his first 10 starts but during the spring of his three-year-old season, he started to turn into a famous winning machine. Phar Lap won 36 of his final 41 starts including the 1930 Melbourne Cup. Champion jockey Jim Pike became Phar Lap's regular rider and the combination won 27 of their 30 races together. The mighty chestnut went to America to win the 1932 Agua Caliente Handicap only to die weeks later after contracting a sudden but mysterious illness. â– â– â– â– â– Waller, J-Mac shooting for history Chris Waller and James McDonald are joining forces to try and break national Group 1 records at Eagle Farm. Waller is aiming to train his 19th Group 1 win of the season, which would set a new standard after equalling his all-time record of 18 majors he first achieved in 2018-19. McDonald has ridden 14 Australian Group 1 winners during 2024-25 and has the opportunity to equal or even break 'Miracle' Mal Johnston's longstanding national riding record of 16 major race winners he established in 1979-80. Waller and McDonald team up with brilliant mare Joliestar ($2.30 favourite) in the Group 1 $1 million Kingsford Smith Cup (1300m), Movin Out ($8) in the Group 1 $700,000 Queensland Oaks (2200m) and Belle Detelle ($7) in the Group 1 $1 million Queensland Derby (2400m). Waller has multiple runners in the three Group 1 races with Democracy Manifest ($41) in the Kingsford Smith Cup, Real Class ($51) and Lovey Dovey ($81) in the Oaks, while Imperialist ($16), Existential Bob ($34) and Liberty Park ($81) are in the Derby. â– â– â– â– â– Moore pumps for Delocroix in English Derby Ryan Moore has chosen to ride Delacroix and not stablemate The Lion In Winter as their trainer Aidan O'Brien bids to win an incredible 11th English Derby at Epsom Downs on Saturday night. O'Brien has three runners in the famous English classic with Moore deciding to stay with the in-form Delacroix over The Lion In Winter, the long-time Derby favourite until his first-up defeat last month. 'It was always going to be hard for him not to ride Delacroix,'' O'Brien said of Moore's Derby choice. 'He is classy and we always thought he would be a Derby horse. 'The Lion In Winter went to the trial and did everything wrong but he has come forward a lot since. ' Lambourn is a lovely, straight forward horse he has a lovely draw in the middle, and he's a genuine, tough stayer.'' In TAB Fixed Odds betting, Delacroix is the Derby favourite at $4.20 just ahead of Godolophin's English 2000 Guineas winner Ruling Court at $4.40 with The Lion In Winter at $6. â– â– â– â– â– 5 YEARS AGO Classique Legend, the brilliant sprinter trained by Les Bridge, missed the autumn carnival but returned for the Bob Charley AO (June) Stakes and despite carrying topweight of 60kg scored by a half length from Southern Lad at Royal Randwick. Ray Thomas' Blackbook: Five to follow from Scone on Saturday

Ray Thomas reviews Saturday's stand-alone meeting at Scone, revealing the horses punters can follow with confidence at their next starts. • â– â– â– â– â– FIVE TO FOLLOW OH DIAMOND LIL (0.9-length 1st of 12, Race 4) had been trialling up a storm prior to her return at Scone. She had never won first-up previously and was vulnerable at 1300m but she settled nicely in behind the leaders until the top of the straight where she seized control of the race and drew clear for a comfortable win. Oh Diamond Lil is an emerging mare and will only improve the deeper she goes into her preparation. ðŸ'Ž Oh Diamond Lil gets the perfect run and wins at Scone! @KPMcEvoy | @DavidPfieffer — SKY Racing (@SkyRacingAU) May 17, 2025 SPANISH FOX (2-length 3rd of 15, Race 6) won five races in succession when last in work and his second-up effort at Scone when third to ZEALOUSLY in very fast time was encouraging. THAMES (Race 7) improved into a tight run between WAVE BREAKER and SHOHISHA on the turn then was buffeted between those runners. Due to contact on its hindquarter Shohisha was then turned out into the running of Thames, resulting in Thames becoming badly unbalanced before that filly ran on strongly for third. PHOTOGRAPH (Race 7) ran only ninth but was very unlucky. After passing the 200m she was checked when disappointed for a run between LADY OLENNA and GERRINGONG.
