China ready to fight fentanyl, illegal immigration with US, top police chief says
China has expressed willingness to work with the United States on anti-drug efforts and the repatriation of illegal immigrants – two priorities for US President Donald Trump – but urged 'mutual respect' from Washington. The remarks were made in a meeting between Minister of Public Security Wang Xiaohong and US ambassador to China David Perdue in Beijing on Thursday. Wang said Beijing was willing to work with Washington and hoped the US could ' meet China halfway , uphold an attitude of equality, respect each other's concerns, and contribute positive energy to the development of bilateral relations', according to state news agency Xinhua. 'We stand ready to engage in practical collaboration with the US in law enforcement areas such as counter-narcotics and the repatriation of illegal immigrants , striving to achieve outcomes that benefit the people of both countries,' Wang was quoted as saying. According to Xinhua, Perdue said he was willing to serve as a communicator and promoter of US-China relations and to advance exchanges and cooperation in areas such as drug control law enforcement. Last year, Beijing and Washington held several meetings to discuss closer cooperation, and law enforcement agencies on both sides have set up anti-drug hotlines to share information.

Trump's Envoy to China Calls Out Threat of Foreign Supply Chains
(Bloomberg) -- The US wants to revamp its trading relationship with China and the world by bringing many critical supply chains back onshore, the American ambassador to Beijing said. Security Concerns Hit Some of the World's 'Most Livable Cities' JFK AirTrain Cuts Fares 50% This Summer to Lure Riders Off Roads How E-Scooters Conquered (Most of) Europe Taser-Maker Axon Triggers a NIMBY Backlash in its Hometown NYC Congestion Toll Cuts Manhattan Gridlock by 25%, RPA Reports 'Unfettered globalization has increasingly created single-source supply chain vulnerabilities,' David Perdue, who assumed his post last month, told a dinner in Washington on Thursday. 'We have all witnessed the extent to which our businesses have become overly dependent on China for components, inputs, intermediate goods and even entire supply chains,' he said, adding that American leaders had been 'blind to the hollowing out of many US strategic industries.' The assessment echoes criticism by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, who said at the recent Group of Seven meeting that the world is experiencing a new 'China Shock.' Her accusation, which drew a sharp retort from Beijing, took aim at what von der Leyen characterized as China's use of its quasi-monopoly over some sectors as both a bargaining chip and a weapon to undermine competition. Perdue took a more measured view, noting in his comments that President Donald Trump doesn't blame China for pursuing its own national interest. 'President Trump's vision is to have a trading relationship with China that is based on reciprocity, fairness and respect — one in which the United States puts the American people first, just as China does for its own people,' he said via a video message to the annual dinner of the US-China Business Council. In earlier remarks at the same event, China's ambassador to the US, Xie Feng, made a case for America to become a partner and not a rival to his country, calling for the removal of still 'unreasonably high' tariffs imposed by Trump. Xie also argued that the trading relationship between China and the US was a 'two-way street,' and neither side was getting ripped off. While the US had a goods trade deficit with China, American companies generated a lot of revenue in China, which in turn ran a shortfall in its services trade with the US. For Perdue, however, the lopsided commerce between the world's two biggest economies can't go on as before. 'We must remedy the current imbalance in our relationship,' he said. 'If the United States is to pursue its own national interest in global trade while ensuring the dollar's place as world's reserve currency, then our economy cannot be so dependent on foreign supply chains that can be severed at any moment.' Top US envoy in Hong Kong may be headed for senior role in Beijing embassy
The top US diplomat in Hong Kong is likely to be heading north to take up a leading role in the United States' Beijing embassy, the South China Morning Post has learned. Gregory May , who arrived to serve as the US consul general for Hong Kong and Macau in September 2022, is tipped to be a top candidate for a ministerial role in the US embassy in Beijing, according to sources. It is a critical time in the relationship as Beijing and Washington engage in a series of high-stakes talks to manage their escalating trade and export control measures. 05:05 Trump and Xi discuss Taiwan, troubled US-China trade ties in call breaking stand-off Trump and Xi discuss Taiwan, troubled US-China trade ties in call breaking stand-off The new American ambassador, David Perdue , assumed his post on May 15, just days after Beijing and Washington reached an unexpected truce in Geneva to de-escalate a trade war that had injected fear into the world's financial markets. May's likely new role would make him one of Perdue's top lieutenants at the 1,300-person embassy in Beijing and mainland consulates, according to one source familiar with the matter. 'His pragmatism, resourcefulness and vast experience covering mainland [China], Hong Kong and Taiwan made him a leading candidate for the role to assist ambassador Perdue,' the source said, declining to be named because of the sensitivity of the matter. A second source said that after several rounds of sanctions imposed from both sides, creating political exchanges in Hong Kong had become difficult, but May still managed to connect with various Hong Kong communities via outreach efforts and was 'instrumental' in maintaining business, academic and people exchanges.

Trump's China Envoy Seeks to Calm US Firms as Trade Ties Fray
US Ambassador David Perdue sought to reassure American businesses in China that the countries will maintain their commercial ties, as tensions flare between the world's largest economies over export controls. The envoy told US business groups on Thursday the Trump administration is looking for ways to cooperate with China and supports their presence in the country, according to people familiar with the matter. The exchanges took place as a dispute over China's grip on critical materials threatens to derail tariff talks that the US said has stalled.
