‘Superman' Director James Gunn Admits ‘Funky' CG Shot ‘Kind of Got by Me,' Pulled It From the Movie

If you thought a preview shot of the Man of Steel flying in the teaser trailer for the upcoming 'Superman' film looked bad, worry not — James Gunn did too. The 'Superman' writer, director and DC Studios co-CEO shared in an interview with Entertainment Weekly published Thursday that an unfinished shot of Kal-El flying through an arctic landscape 'kind of got by' him in an early teaser. In fact, the shot bothered him so much, it will not appear in the final cut of the film. The shot in question, featured at the end of a 30-second teaser released Jan. 26, follows Superman from behind as he soars through the arctic — likely, either coming or going from his Fortress of Solitude. When Superman approaches a rocky structure, the camera switches angles to cover his face as he does a barrel roll. What follows is a shot of Superman flying straight at the camera — with actor David Corenswet's visage looking strangely static and warped. 'The part of him flying, it was a photograph of his face and him flying. It was a photograph of a drone flying in front of an actual background,' Gunn said. 'So all the pieces were real, but it was incorporated in kind of a funky way.' You can see for yourself in the teaser below. Gunn owned up to the mistake, saying he didn't look as closely at the TV spot as he would a full trailer. The shot faced broad criticism at the time of its release; however, it appears that, even then, Superman's flight had plenty of defenders. Gunn spoke to the difficulty of depicting a hero with such 'simplicity and elegance' as Superman. Gunn has directed flying superheroes before, including Star-Lord and Adam Warlock in his 'Guardians of the Galaxy' trilogy. However, he has never depicted flight on a character as graceful as the Man of Steel. Though Gunn removed this shot from 'Superman,' fans will have to wait until July 11 to see how the director handles the character's flight overall. James Gunn's Superman set to soar at US box office with $135 million opening: Early tracking

James Gunn's Superman is projected to rake in $135 million at the U.S. box office, according to a report by The Hollywood Reporter. With three weeks remaining until its July 11 release, early tracking numbers place the highly anticipated DC film firmly among the studio's top openers. If the current projection holds, Superman would secure a strong debut—though still short of 2016's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, which opened at $166 million. It would, however, outpace 2013's Man of Steel, which launched with $116 million. According to data from National Research Group (NRG) accessed by The Hollywood Reporter, the tracking range lies between $125 million and $145 million. DC Studios and Warner Bros. insiders are reportedly setting expectations slightly lower, estimating between $90 million and $125 million. Social media momentum has led some box office analysts to forecast an even higher opening—up to $175 million. If that materializes, Gunn's reboot would become the biggest DC debut to date, surpassing Batman v Superman and edging out Nolan's The Dark Knight trilogy. The film marks the first original release under James Gunn and Peter Safran's leadership of DC Studios. With the franchise undergoing a complete reset, the success of Superman will likely set the tone for its future. David Corenswet leads the cast as Clark Kent, opposite Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor. Also starring are Skyler Gisondo, Sara Sampaio, Edi Gathegi, and Isabela Merced. The storyline reintroduces Superman's origin with modern updates—including the fan-favourite Krypto the Superdog. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Entertainment gossip and news from Newsweek's network of contributors DC Studios co-head and "Superman" writer/director James Gunn has finally responded to online controversy over a shot from the very first teaser for the film. Gunn says the shot in question didn't have finished visual effects and was one he had taken out of the movie. Read More: 'F1: The Movie' Star Hints He Could Be The Next Black Panther Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Gunn was talking about how he had to learn how to shoot David Corenswet as a flying Superman. The filmmaker was asked about the shot from the teaser and if that was indicative of the learning curve. David Corenswet in "Superman." David Corenswet in "Superman." Warner Bros "No, I don't think it was so much," Gunn said. "It was a TV commercial and it wasn't a finished visual effects shot. So the part of him flying, it was a photograph of his face and him flying. It was a photograph of a drone flying in front of an actual background." "So all the pieces were real, but it was incorporated in kind of a funky way. I didn't love the shot, so it's not even the shot that's in the movie." "Sometimes I'm pretty strict about when I'm going through a trailer and looking at each of the shots, but sometimes the commercials, I forget to look at this closely. So that one kind of got by me." While "Superman" is tracking a solid box office opening of $90 to $125 million, there is still a corner of the Internet that has been criticizing just about everything that comes out about the film. In particular, fans of Zack Snyder's DC films who don't approve of the DC Studios reboot have been voicing their disapproval since day one, with some going so far as to try to organize a review bombing campaign. Regardless, "Superman" is on its way, and with it, the DCU cracks wide open. Following next year are "Supergirl" and the body horror film "Clayface". "Creature Commandos" was released on Max earlier this year, and "Peacemaker" Season 2 streams in August. "Superman" releases in theaters on July 11. Tickets are on sale now. The film is written and directed by James Gunn. "Superman" stars David Corenswet, Rachel Brosnahan, Nicholas Hoult, Edi Gathegi, Anthony Carrigan, Nathan Fillion, and Isabela Merced. David Corenswet Is the 'Sexy New Superman' on PEOPLE Cover and the Actor Talks Christopher Reeve Similarities — GeekTyrant

Just weeks ahead of the release of Superman , David Corenswet appears on the cover of People Magazine, crowned as the 'Sexy New Superman.' As the marketing campaign for the film ramps up, this high-profile spotlight is helping to introduce Corenswet to the masses, not just as Clark Kent, but as the new face of the DC Cinematic Universe. Director James Gunn, who's spearheading the DCU reboot, couldn't be more confident in the casting. Gunn told People: 'He's got all the charm and muscles a Superman needs. He has, as one friend said, 'such Superman face.' But he's also an incredibly talented actor that could balance the dramatic chops and humor and naturalism and physicality the role calls for.' Corenswet's journey to Superman was much like Christopher Reeve before him as the actor trained at Juilliard and was heavily involved in theater. Reeve's legacy clearly looms large. Corenswet said: 'He was somebody who we talked about quite a lot as an alumni who was to be sort of admired and looked up to. People tell me I look like Superman, but don't realize that I'm playing Superman.' Corenswet has been steadily building his reputation with roles in Pearl and Twisters . Superman , however, is clearly his breakout moment. Gunn's reboot deliberately steers clear of the previous DCEU baggage, choosing to recast the Man of Steel rather than bringing Henry Cavill back. The goal was to give us a younger, more grounded Superman, someone already three years into protecting Metropolis, but still growing into the legend. Superman is 'set in a world very different from ours and far removed from the DCEU. Heroes have been around for ages, and we'll see how it affected this world's history and has shaped the DCU." The cast of Superman also includes Nicholas Hoult as Lex, and Rachel Brosnahan as Lois, Skyler Gisondo as Clark's best pal, Jimmy Olsen; Wendell Pierce as The Daily Planet's Perry White; Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El, aka Supergirl; Isabela Merced as Kendra Saunders, aka Hawkgirl; and Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner. It also stars Sean Gunn as Maxwell Lord; Edi Gathegi as Michael Holt, aka Mister Terrific; Maria Gabriela de Faria as Angela Spica, aka The Engineer; Sara Sampan as Eve Teschmacher; Anthony Carrigan as Rex Mason, aka Metamorphosis; Frank Grillo as Rick Flag Sr.; Neva Howell as Martha Kent; and Pruitt Taylor Vince as Jonathan Kent. The movie is scheduled for a theatrical release on July 11, 2025.

This Is The Best ‘Fortnite' Skin Ever Made, Here's How To Get It

Fortnite Epic While I have been collecting Fortnite skins on and off for years now, I have not been this impressed with a new offering…ever, really. Fortnite has just revealed a new style for Superman, the key figure in this themed season, and a very obvious marketing connection to the upcoming Superman DCU film on July 8. The original skin is very much modeled on actor David Corenswet, as opposed to a more generic Superman that arrived in the game a long time ago. But this new style? It's the best skin I've ever seen, both an evolution of Fortnite's recent 'pen and ink' skin concept and one that appears to have been drawn for the game by the comic legend himself, Jim Lee, as his signature appears next to the skin. The pen and ink skin harkens back to the original 'Action Comics' days of the first appearance of Superman, which is why the 'S' looks like that. We have seen other pen and ink variants of skins somewhat recently, like Deadpool and Wolverine, and Bucky and Yelena from Thunderbolts. It's always been an awesome style, but this Jim Lee version is easily the best I've seen. I would declare it the best Fortnite skin in the game, personally. Fortnite Epic The catch here is how to get it. You will need to own the battle pass for this season to get all the way to the Superman bonus skin zone. Then, you have to wait until July 11 (three days after the movie premieres) when it and its challenges unlock. Then you will have to get all the way through that mini pass to reach pen and ink Superman in the final spot. So now, he's not simply in the store right now for you to snatch up for a certain amount of V-bucks. In some ways I guess 'earning' him is good, but I mean, you're still paying for the battle pass up front. While Fortnite has become a frequent marketing tool for all manner of projects these days, this Superman-led season, which includes narrative components and genuinely fun super-additions to combat in the game, is going better than most. Add on this all-time great skin, and yes, I think I'm going to have to hop in at least by the time July 11 hits to earn it for myself. Hopefully, I'm up to the task.
