Charleston Police announce swearing-in ceremony for two new police horses

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – After asking for the public's help naming their two new police horses, the Charleston Police Department has announced the names of its new four-hooved officers and when they will be sworn in. Mount 1 is officially 'Rucker' in a tribute to a local supporter and Charleston's very own country star, Darius Rucker. Voters decided on 'Riley' as the name for Mount 2, which is a nod to long-time Charleston Mayor Joe Riley, who served the city for 41 years. The new officers will be sworn in at a Meet the Mounts event Friday from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the Hampton Park horse barn. The department wanted to note that limited parking is available at the barn, and access to the paddocks will be determined based on crowd size to ensure safety. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. The country crooner went on to explain, "We wrote this song in the mountains of North Carolina, and I knew I loved it that day." "We were sitting there around the couch talking about old summers and reminiscing on good times and the soundtracks of those summers, and I started talking about Hootie & the Blowfish," McCreery recalled. The American Idol winner said his co-writer Frank Rogers then began playing the iconic Hootie song "Hold My Hand" with the new song "Bottle Rockets"—and "it just felt natural." "It felt like that's how the song was supposed to be," Mcreery added. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Scotty McCreery (@scottymccreery) Even though the "Five More Minutes" singer has been "friends" with Rucker for "a while now," McCreery was admittedly still "nervous" to reach out to the band about coming on the song—but fortunately, Rucker and the rest of the guys in the band instantly "loved" the track. "I think that's one of my favorite things about the song," McCreery went on to say. "It's not a sample of 'Hold My Hand.' Hootie & the Blowfish, all the guys went back in there in the studio and re-recorded their parts for 'Bottle Rockets' to make it happen." Hootie & The Blowfish Is Back On The Charts With An Unlikely New Hit

Scotty McCreery's "Bottle Rockets," featuring Hootie & the Blowfish, debuts at No. 30 on Billboard's ... More Country Airplay chart and samples the band's 1994 hit. LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA - NOVEMBER 04: Darius Rucker of Hootie & the Blowfish performs onstage during Hootie & the Blowfish at The Troubadour on November 04, 2019 in Los Angeles, California. (Photo byfor Hootie & the Blowfish) Hootie & the Blowfish changed the sound of alternative rock decades ago and ruled the airwaves for a time. The band produced some of the biggest hits of the mid-'90s, and its album Cracked Rear View — which has already moved more than 20 million units in the United States alone — was not only inescapable, it remains one of the bestselling releases of all time in the country. While the group is usually associated with one popular subgenre of rock, it's on the country charts where the outfit returns this week. Scotty McCreery recruited Hootie & the Blowfish for his new single, which debuts on one Billboard tally this week. "Bottle Rockets" opens at No. 30 on the Country Airplay chart. It instantly becomes a top 40 win on one of the most competitive radio rankings in America, as the airwaves still make or break tracks in that genre. Despite the fact that the band is almost always connected with rock and rock alone, Hootie & the Blowfish has reached the Country Airplay chart before. The outfit sent its own cut "Hold On" to No. 30 back in 2019. Coincidentally, the group has only landed a pair of wins on the country list, and both have peaked in the same position — at least so far. "Bottle Rockets" doesn't just feature Hootie & the Blowfish — it samples one of the band's biggest singles. The tune interpolates "Hold My Hand," which the rockers turned into a proper smash back in 1994. That cut, the group's debut release, helped break the musicians and make them a household name, and now they've earned another placement on a ranking few could have predicted it would ever reach. Of course, while Hootie & the Blowfish doesn't have a long history on the Country Airplay chart, lead singer Darius Rucker is familiar with the ranking. After splitting up the band — at least for a time — he pursued a solo career in that genre. He has thus far earned 23 appearances on the tally, with nearly half of them — nine tunes — entering the top 10. Nine of those have run the show for a time. McCreery, meanwhile, scores his eighteenth hit on the Country Airplay chart. Exactly half of those have broken into the top 10, and he's nabbed himself five No. 1s. The former American Idol winner is promoting an upcoming album, which seems to be fronted by 'Bottle Rockets.'
