Dar Al Atta'a unveils Oman's first solar-powered community for cyclone-affected families

Al Khabourah: In a significant step for sustainable community development in the Sultanate, Dar Al Atta'a Association officially inaugurated the first phase of Hay Al Atta'a, Oman's first solar-powered residential neighbourhood, on June 11, 2025. The project provides permanent housing for families who lost their homes during Cyclone Shaheen, which made landfall in North Al Batinah in 2021. The inauguration ceremony was held under the patronage of Eng Khalfan bin Saeed Al Shuaili, Minister of Housing and Urban Planning, and Dr Laila bint Ahmed Al Najjar, Minister of Social Development. Located in San'aa Bani Ghafir, in Wilayat Al Khabourah, the new neighbourhood includes 36 five-bedroom homes, each spanning approximately 272 m². The project was developed by Dar Al Atta'a in partnership with the Ministry of Housing and Urban Planning, the Office of the Governor of North Al Batinah, the Municipality of Al Khabourah, and with direct support from the local community. Speaking to the media, Maryam bint Issa Al Zadjali, founder and Chairperson of Dar Al Atta'a, shared that the idea for Hay Al Atta'a was born in the immediate aftermath of Cyclone Shaheen. 'The idea for Hay Al Atta'a emerged in the wake of Cyclone Shaheen. In response, we launched a fundraising campaign — 'A Million from the People to the People.' By the grace of God, we raised OMR1 million. As an organisation, we always strive to develop sustainable projects. Rather than providing short-term aid like food or furnishings, we envisioned a long-lasting solution — to build permanent homes for families who had no means to rebuild on their own.' "One of the most transformative aspects of the project is its reliance on green energy, a first for housing initiatives of this kind in the area. 'Without a doubt, the most significant element is the use of green energy. It reduces residents' electricity costs, and if they generate a surplus, they can sell it back to the government. This approach hasn't been implemented here before — it's an exciting innovation,' said Al Zadjali. Each home is equipped with 48 rooftop solar panels, making the neighbourhood fully energy-integrated and cost-efficient for its residents. The homes are part of a broader eco-integrated neighbourhood that also includes a sustainable wastewater management system, aimed at recycling water and reducing waste. When asked why Dar Al Atta'a opted for an eco-conscious approach, Al Zadjali explained the vision extended far beyond shelter: 'As an Association, we try to remain attuned to current developments. With this project, our goal wasn't just sustainability — it was to create a lifestyle. From the community centre we're building, to the urban planning, landscaping, and architectural design, every detail was carefully thought out.' Families are expected to move in soon, with all residential units ready for occupancy. The second phase of Hay Al Atta'a is already under development and will include a community centre, commercial outlets, and a mosque. Completion is expected within two years. Dar Al Atta'a is one of Oman's leading charitable associations, established in 2002 and officially registered in 2006 under Ministerial Decision No. 76/2006. Operating under the supervision of the Ministry of Social Development, the organisation is dedicated to empowering underprivileged families across the Sultanate through sustainable and dignified support. In 2024 alone, Dar Al Atta'a disbursed over OMR 4 million in aid, including OMR 1.24 million for housing, over OMR 1 million in debt relief, and support across education, family care, disaster response, and children's literacy programmes such as Let's Read.

Oman's first solar-powered community launched

AL KHABOURAH: In a landmark development, the initial phase of Oman's first eco-friendly residential community was launched here on Wednesday for families affected by Cyclone Shaheen in Al Batinah North Governorate. The launch was held under the auspices of Dr Khalfan bin Said al Shueili, Minister of Housing and Urban Planning, and Dr Laila bint Ahmed al Najjar, Minister of Social Development. Developed by local charity association Dar Al Atta'a, the neighbourhood dubbed as Hay Al Atta'a (Al Atta'a Neighbourhood), is located in San'aa Bani Ghafir, Wilayat of Al Khabourah. The eco-friendly integrated neighbourhood, spanning an area of 1,000 m2, will include 36 solar-powered residential units, a community centre, commercial shops and a mosque. It is the result of collaboration between the association, the Ministry of Housing and Urban Planning, the Office of the Governor of Al Batinah North, and the Municipality of Al Khabourah, with support from the local community. Speaking to the Observer, Founder and Chairperson of Dar Al Atta'a Association, Maryam bint Issa al Zadjaliyah, shared that the initiative was born in the aftermath of Cyclone Shaheen in 2021. Oman's first solar-powered community launched 'The idea for Hay Atta'a emerged in the wake of Cyclone Shaheen. In response, the association launched a fundraising campaign through which we were able to collect RO 1 million. As an organisation, we always strive to develop sustainable projects. Rather than providing short-term aid like food or furnishings, we envisioned a long-lasting solution — to build permanent homes for families severely impacted by the cyclone, especially those who lacked the means to rebuild on their own,' she said. Significantly, the use of green energy is the most significant feature of the neighbourhood, said the Chairperson of Dar Al Atta'a Association. 'Without a doubt, the most significant is the use of green energy. It reduces residents' electricity costs, and if they generate a surplus, they can sell it back to the government. This approach hasn't been implemented in this area before, so it's an exciting innovation.' In addition to solar power, the neighbourhood is also equipped with a sustainable wastewater management system, designed to reduce and recycle water use. When asked why the association opted to build an eco-friendly neighbourhood, instead of conventional housing, she emphasised that the project's goal was to introduce a new model for sustainable, community-centred living. 'As an association, we always strive to remain attuned to current developments. With this project, our goal extended beyond sustainability — we wanted to create a lifestyle, a holistic way of living.' The first phase of the project witnessed the inauguration of 36 eco-friendly residential units, each spanning an area of approximately 272m2. The five-bedroom homes are equipped with 48 solar panels each. According to officials, residents are expected to occupy the units soon. The second phase of the project, which is currently under development, will include a community centre, commercial shops and a mosque. It is expected to be ready within two years. 2022 © All right reserved for Oman Establishment for Press, Publication and Advertising (OEPPA) Provided by SyndiGate Media Inc. (

Oman Arab Bank and Dar Al Atta'a Partner to Share the Gift of Reading at Muscat International Book Fair 2025

Muscat: As part of a leading initiative aimed at instilling the love of reading in the hearts of children and enhancing community interaction, Oman Arab Bank (OAB) has teamed up with Dar Al Atta'a, a leading charity organization in the Sultanate of Oman, for a special book donation campaign at the Muscat International Book Fair 2025. The fair, which was held from April 24 to May 3 at the Oman Convention & Exhibition Center (OCEC), served as a hub for book lovers, authors, and cultural enthusiasts alike. This year, OAB introduced an exciting opportunity for visitors to make a meaningful impact. A dedicated book donation box was set up at the fair near Gate 3, opposite the OAB booth. The bank invited all visitors to bring along their gently used books and donate them to the initiative. These books were then to be distributed to children across Oman to provide them with the tools to embark on their own journeys of discovery and imagination. Commenting on the initiative, Mr Sulaiman Al Harthi, CEO of Oman Arab Bank, said, 'We believe that reading opens doors to endless possibilities. This initiative is a testament to our commitment towards the communities we serve. By partnering with Dar Al Atta'a, we have not only helped instill the joy of reading into the hearts of young readers, but we also gave back to the community in a meaningful way. Through this initiative we hoped to inspire a generation of young readers; those same who will shape the future of our country.' The collaboration between OAB and Dar Al Atta'a reflects the bank's ongoing efforts to make a positive social impact. The book donation initiative is just one of the ways OAB supports educational and social causes, alongside its broader role in the digital transformation of Oman's banking landscape. OAB's participation as Official Banking Partner of the book fair was also aligned with its commitment to enhancing the visitor experience through cashless transactions using the OAB SoftPOS system at every book stall. Visitors were able to conveniently tap-to-pay to make quick and secure purchases. The Muscat International Book Fair served as a platform to promote cultural exchange and learning. Oman Arab Bank's involvement this year was a step towards fostering a society that values education, and knowledgeable empowerment.
