Forum: Caregiving doesn't have to be a lonely journey

Forum: Caregiving doesn't have to be a lonely journey I refer to the Opinion article by Dr Daniel Fung, 'What happens when families can't cope with caregiving?' (June 19). Caregivers often give their all to support their loved ones, especially at the start of their caregiving journey. But, over time, with recurring crises and no clear end in sight, many find themselves running on empty. All too often, we witness caregivers pushed to their breaking point. Of the 20,000 caregivers that Caregivers Alliance Limited has supported over the years, many are already burnt out or on the verge of it when they come to us. Mental and emotional exhaustion is common, and some develop mental health conditions themselves. Through training and support groups, caregivers can gain vital tools, skills and knowledge. They also realise that caring for themselves is key to their caregiving journey. Many leave our 12-week course or regular support sessions feeling empowered, re-energised and connected to a community that truly understands them. For many, attending these sessions becomes a welcome form of respite. We urge caregivers to tap into such subsidised programmes that can make a difference in their lives and those they care for.
