Actor Eric Dane says disease has taken all function in right arm
ALS has robbed Eric Dane (pic) of functioning in his right arm and is creeping through his left, the actor said in an emotional interview about the diagnosis he revealed in April. The symptoms began rather subtly about a year and a half ago, the Euphoria and Grey's Anatomy star told Diane Sawyer on Good Morning America in an interview that aired Monday morning. He is looking to raise awareness about the disease. 'I started experiencing some weakness in my right hand,' said Dane, 52. 'And I didn't really think anything of it at the time. I thought maybe I'd been texting too much, and my hand was fatigued.' It didn't go away, however, leading to a string of specialist visits that culminated nine months later with a diagnosis of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also known as Lou Gehrig's disease for the Yankees Hall of Fame player who died of it in 1941. 'A few weeks later I noticed it had gotten a little worse,' Dane recounted. 'So I went and saw a hand specialist, who sent me to another hand specialist. I went and saw a neurologist, and the neurologist sent me to another neurologist, who said, 'This is way above my pay grade.' ' Now, his right arm has 'completely stopped working,' the actor said. 'I feel like maybe a couple more months and I won't have my left hand either.' The letters ALS are burned into Dane's brain. 'I will never forget those three letters,' the veteran actor told Sawyer. 'It's on me the second I wake up.' The rare motor neuron disease affects nerve cells, weakening the muscles and leading to paralysis that eventually extends to the muscles that control speaking, eating and breathing, the Mayo Clinic explains. Dane is weathering this storm with the help of his wife, actress Rebecca Gayheart, and their daughters Billie Beatrice, 15, and Georgia Geraldine, 13. He said the diagnosis really hit home a few months ago during a boat trip with one of his daughters, when he jumped into ocean and realised he couldn't make it back to the boat on his own. 'I realised in that moment, I'm not safe in the water anymore,' he said. His daughter dragged him back, and he made sure she returned to the water to finish her snorkeling session with the guide. 'But I was just heartbroken.' Nonetheless, Dane is determined to keep working as long as he is able. 'I don't think this is the end of my story,' he told Sawyer. 'In my heart I just don't feel like this is the end of me. I'm fighting as much as I can.' At the same time, he allowed, 'There's so much about it that's out of my control.' – New York Daily News/Tribune News Service

First impressions of new Motherwell boss Jens Barthel Askou
This week, the press had their first meeting with new Motherwell manager Jens Berthel Askou. And to paraphrase from that famous scene in Jerry Maguire, he had me at 'I scored against Airdrie'. It wasn't only his willingness to dredge the dark corners of his memory bank to give the papers a colourful wee line about his strike against the dastardly Diamonds that impressed me, though. The Dane was affable, certainly, but he also came across as driven, direct, and a clear communicator. That will be most important of course in getting his message across to his new players as he looks to implement his style of play. It was striking just how clued up he already appeared to be not only on his own squad, but the playing styles of the other teams in the division, and it was intriguing to hear how he thinks a more 'modern' style of play could be effective in the Scottish Premiership. The cherry on top though is that he comes across well on camera and in print. (Image: GordonTerris/Herald&Times) Sometimes, I think the media can be guilty of overemphasising our importance. At the end of the day, if a manager is getting results on the park, fans probably couldn't care less about how his relations with the press pack might be or even what he is saying in his post-match MFC TV interview. Read more: And as we all saw when Ange Postecoglou was prowling around press rooms up here, the majority of fans actually love to see a journalist being chopped down to size and their ego being pricked when they put forward a daft question. Not that it ever happened to me. Not at all, mate. On the other hand, when things aren't going so swimmingly, the ability to convey a compelling narrative and explain what it is you are trying to do can buy managers a fair bit of time, and encourages more patience from the stands. There is an element of familiarity breeding contempt when a manager is wheeled out in front of the cameras for the umpteenth time in a season, particularly when they are on a poor run of results. Fans start to pick up on mannerisms, and start to get annoyed by them, like Stevie Hammell scratching his head, for instance. Or they get fed up with long answers, such as those preferred by Stuart Kettlewell, particularly in the latter days of his Fir Park reign. Otherwise small - even absurd - things, that become big things in the wrong circumstances. If Berthel Askou loses his first 10 games, I'm fairly sure he will be rubbing folk up the wrong way in his post-match briefings too, but the first impressions were good. Scottish football, and I include the media in this, can often be hostile to outsiders when they land one of our top managerial jobs. That doesn't necessarily have to be a foreigner, it could be a coach who hasn't played professionally or as simple as someone who talks a fair bit about xG and low blocks. That has changed significantly over the last few years, but getting the right balance between relaying your tactical plan to your fanbase while also being a personality that people can warm to is still more important, in my view, than some people might care to believe. And having impressed the fans and somewhat charmed the press (not just Motherwell media mafia sorts) in his first press outing, it inspires confidence that he will also be able to communicate what he wants clearly to the players. What he also conveyed, along with a sense that it probably wouldn't be wise to get on the wrong side of him, was a sense of calm. That after the tumult of the last few weeks following the departure of Michael Wimmer, things were back under control and a plan was in place for the new season. (Image: GordonTerris/Herald&Times) There is much work to be done, as he readily acknowledged. He needs an assistant manager for one, following the delayed departure of Ahmet Koc on Tuesday. Despite the still decent size of the squad, he also stressed the importance of getting some quality players in, and while not giving away any names, he hinted that he is already a good way down the road in identifying his targets. In short, it was all very reassuring. And more than a little exciting. After the bubble was burst a little following Wimmer's exit, the board seemed to have identified a candidate who inspires the same sort of intrigue around what he may be able to bring to the table and achieve with this team. The proof will be on the pitch, as it always is, but hopefully Berthel Askou's appointment, and his talk of 'breaking barriers' in Scottish football, will reinvigorate a bit of that optimism that was around at the tail end of last season within the fanbase. All he has to do now is give us a wee verse of that song I taught him about Section B and he'll be in with the bricks.

Eric Dane's alleged girlfriend was ‘blindsided' by his red carpet debut with Janell Shirtcliff
Don't miss out on the headlines from Hook Ups & Break Ups. Followed categories will be added to My News. Eric Dane's alleged girlfriend, Priya Jain, was 'blindsided' by his red carpet debut with Janell Shirtcliff, Page Six has exclusively learned. 'They never broke up,' a source told Page Six on Thursday. The actor, 52, brought Shirtcliff to Wednesday's Los Angeles premiere of his new series, Countdown, with a source claiming to Entertainment Tonight that 'the two have been in an on-and-off relationship for over three years and care deeply for each other.' However, Page Six is told it was the first time Jain, 27, had ever heard of the director, 41. Our source said Jain, who has been photographed with Dane multiple times, met him last summer and that they became 'exclusive' in November 2024 — right before he was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). He announced his diagnosis in April. According to our source, Jain was 'devastated by the diagnosis' but stood by the Grey's Anatomy star's side. Interestingly, ET's source claimed that 'Eric asked Janell to be there for him during this time, and she wanted to show up for him.' It is understood told that since Jain and Dane met, she has spent almost every night at his house, where she has tons of clothes. The source added that the actress has even spent time with Dane's kids — daughters Billie, 15, and Georgia, 13 — whom he shares with Rebecca Gayheart. Gayheart, 53, has since clarified that she and her on-again, off-again husband are 'staying a family' and remain the 'best of friends.' Not only did Jain and Dane get matching star tattoos late last year, but the Euphoria star also gave her a tattoo with an at-home tattoo gun shortly after, it was claimed. The source added that the last time they saw each other was this past weekend, while the last time they were photographed together was mid-May. Reps for Dane, Jain and Shirtcliff did not immediately respond to Page Six's requests for comment. Eric Dane, who famously bathed with 2 women, now appears tangled up with 3
Eric Dane and filmmaker Janell Shirtcliff looked to be in full couple mode Wednesday at the premiere of Prime Video's 'Countdown,' a new series he stars in with Jensen Ackles. Hands were held; smiles and admiring glances were exchanged. He was definitely not with Rebecca Gayheart, whom he married in October 2004 and just said — on national news, no less — is the person he reaches out to daily for 'stalwart' support. Nope, even though Gayheart in early March requested the dismissal, without prejudice, of the 2018 divorce petition she had filed against Dane. Dane revealed in April that he had been diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, a.k.a. ALS or Lou Gehrig's disease. Earlier this week, he revealed that he had lost function in his right arm due to the neuromuscular disease and felt his left arm failing. So who's dating whom? Dane's relationship status is a bit fuzzy. The 'Grey's Anatomy' alum, 52, has been 'in an on-and-off relationship' with Shirtcliff for more than three years, Entertainment Tonight reported Wednesday. The two 'care deeply for each other,' the outlet said, citing a source who added, 'Eric asked Janell to be there for him during this time, and she wanted to show up for him.' Shirtcliff, who is a photographer and director, is in pre-production on the film 'Generation Angst' and post-production on the horror flick 'Triton,' according to IMDb. But — Dane's alleged girlfriend, actor Priya Jain, 27, was 'blindsided' by his appearance at the event with Shirtcliff, 41, a source told Page Six on Thursday. Jain and Dane met last summer and became 'exclusive' in November 2024, the source said. 'They never broke up.' The two have been photographed arm-in-arm in public and have matching tattoos, and she has spent 'almost every night' at his house since they coupled up, Page Six said. They reportedly were together last weekend. This three-way confusion is a tiny bit reminiscent of Dane and Gayheart's nude 2009 bathtub video with actor Kari Ann Peniche, which the 'Euphoria' actor discussed in 2019 with Glamour. In the leaked video, the three could be seen bathing together naked — not having sex — and discussing their potential porn names about 15 years into the Gayheart-Dane marriage. 'I don't necessarily think I was breaking any laws and corrupting anybody. We were just three people taking a bath,' he told the magazine. He added, referring at the time to the entirety of his past — including the bathtub video and his addiction to prescribed painkillers — 'I have no regrets nor do I make any apologies for my life experience. It's my life experience and I am at peace with all of it.' As for Gayheart, she and Dane remain estranged as husband and wife even though she called off the divorce and they are in frequent contact as co-parents to their two daughters. 'I call Rebecca. I talk to her every day,' Dane said Monday on 'Good Morning America,' fighting back tears as he talked about battling ALS. 'We have managed to become better friends and better parents. And she is probably my biggest champion, my most stalwart supporter, and I lean on her.'

Eric Dane steps out for 1st red carpet since announcing ALS diagnosis
Eric Dane made his first red carpet appearance since he announced his ALS diagnosis in April. The actor stepped out for the premiere of the series, "Countdown," in Los Angeles on Wednesday. In attendance were his "Countdown" co-stars Jensen Ackles, Jessica Camacho, Violett Beane, Elliot Knight and Uli Latukefu. Dane was all smiles as he posed for photos with Janell Shirtcliff. "I feel good," Dane told Variety in an interview at the event. "It's nice to be here with everybody and see the hours and hours of work that we put into this come alive on screen." Earlier this week, the former "Grey's Anatomy" star opened up about his diagnosis with ABC News' Diane Sawyer. ALS, which is short for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, is a degenerative neurological disorder that eventually leads to paralysis, taking away a person's ability to move, speak, swallow or even breathe, according to the National Institutes of Health. There is currently no cure for ALS. Despite already losing the use of his right arm and fears he has about what ALS symptoms he may experience next, the actor told E! News in an interview this week that he plans ot keep working "'til the wheels fall off." "It keeps me sharp. It keeps me moving forward, which is super important right now," he said. "I feel great when I'm at work," he added. "Of course, there have been some sort of setbacks, but I feel pretty good. My spirit is always pretty buoyant, so at the end of the day, that's all that matters. Eric Dane says he has lost use of his right arm amid ALS battle Dane's new series follows LAPD detective Mark Meachum (Ackles), who is recruited to a secret task force with other undercover agents to investigate the murder of an officer with the Department of Homeland Security, according to a synopsis in a press release. The synopsis continues, "But the hunt for the killer soon uncovers a plot far more sinister than anyone could have imagined, kicking off a race against time to save a city of millions."
