Daizen Maeda drops huge clue on Celtic future amid £21m transfer temptation

The forward is attracting attention after netting 33 goals for the Scottish champions last season In-demand Daizen Maeda has hinted he will stay at Celtic beyond the summer window for another shot at the Champions League. The 27-year-old enjoyed his most successful campaign since making his move to Celtic Park back in 2022 – with Ange Postecoglou taking him from his former side to Yokohama F. Marinos – netting 33 goals last season. ‌ That has seen the likes of Tottenham, Fenerbahce and West Ham touted with a move for the forward - with reports in Turkey stating Jose Mourinho's men have been to stump up £21million for the star by Celtic. ‌ And after escaping the league phase of Europe's elite competition with the Hoops last season, the Japan international is eyeing another crack at the competition. He said: "I really enjoyed playing in the Champions League this season because there were so many games and it gave us a lot of different challenges. "I think the new format has been great and I am excited to try it again this upcoming season. It helped me improve. "We played some great teams. Personally, I actually thought the best side we played was Atalanta because they didn't appear to have any weaknesses. "Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund were very strong, but they had some weaknesses in their team, but when we played Atalanta, there was nothing for us to work on. ‌ "When we faced Dortmund, we chose to go head-on with them and lost seven goals. "It was this defeat that made us realise that it is unrealistic to go toe-for-toe against strong teams at this stage. That is why we learned from our mistakes and turned to a pragmatic approach. "I scored four goals and was happy with my performances. ‌ "We had a chance to win the treble, but lost the Scottish Cup Final on the last day of the season so I still think we have room for improvement at Celtic. "Personally, although everyone spoke about how I scored more goals, I think my increase in assists were more satisfying for me. "I like to defend too. It's muscle memory for me. When the team loses the ball, because I am the first line of defence, my body will instinctively start chasing back. This defensive awareness has been deeply rooted in my bones and I don't need to think about it." ‌ And Maeda, in an interview in his homeland, revealed how he got his inspiration for his iconic knee slide celebration that he did 33 times during the campaign. He explained: "My son was doing knee sliding exercises at home. I was inspired by that and thought I could do it too. "I thought I'd give it a go and it was surprisingly easy, so I started doing it after that. It's easy to do in Scotland because the grass is always wet." Ex-Celtic star wants return for 'fantastic' ex-teammate

The former Hoops striker has a year left on his contract at Crystal Palace but is out of the picture there after an unfruitful loan at relegated Leicester City. Just 21 goals since leaving Parkhead in a £15million deal four years ago is a far cry from his Celts days when he would hit more than that in just one campaign. So a return to the east end of Glasgow could be just what he needs to resurrect his career. And it would be a similar story to Kieran Tierney and Jota, who have both recently returned to the club for far less than they were initially sold for. Read more: Allan, who was at the club at the same time as the Frenchman, thinks Celtic should be looking to bring him back. With Daizen Maeda potentially moving back out to play in the wide areas, a space could open up for the 27-year-old. He told Clyde 1 Superscoreboard: 'I would (take him back), yeah. Fantastic player. It's obviously a position that Celtic will be looking to add to. "I think we might see Daizen Maeda go back out to that wide area, where he was so effective in terms of his pressing and getting up and down the pitch. 'He'll be looking to add to his goal tally come next season. I think there's no question that it's an area of the park where Celtic need to strengthen.'

Odsonne Edouard to Celtic transfer rumour reignited by man who knows him and the 4 glaring reasons it makes sense

The stars might just be aligning for the Frenchman's long-speculated return to Celtic Park Odsonne Edouard has once again been talked up for a return to Celtic – but this time, there might just be more than one reason it makes sense. The Parkhead side have exploded into life in this transfer window with Kieran Tierney in the door and deals for Benjamin Nygren and Fulham striker Callum Osmand at advanced stages. ‌ They're not stopping there either. We're expecting at least two more arrivals beyond that – with a new left-back to provide backup for Tierney and another striker expected in the door. ‌ Edouard, who has frequently been linked with a move back to Parkhead in the past, could tick that last box. Brendan Rodgers of course was the manager who took him to Celtic in the first place back in 2017, setting the wheels in motion that eventually earned him a £15m move down south. And after a disappointing spell on loan at Leicester, his hunger for a move back to Scotland to reignite his career is likely to be higher than ever before. His only other option, as things stand, appears to be a move to Saudi Arabia. Crystal Palace are likely to be willing to cut ties too as he enters the final year on his deal so those three reasons mean it looks like an attainable option. But more than all of that, he looks a direct fit for the current recruitment plan taking place – with Rodgers seemingly keen on another outright number nine to facilitate Daizen Maeda 's move back out to the left wing. Scott Allan, who knows Edouard from his own time at Celtic Park, said on Clyde 1 Superscoreboard: 'I would (take him back), yeah. Fantastic player. It's obviously a position that Celtic will be looking to add to. I think we might see Daizen Maeda go back out to that wide area, where he was so effective in terms of his pressing and getting up and down the pitch. ‌ 'He'll be looking to add to his goal tally come next season. I think there's no question that it's an area of the park where Celtic need to strengthen.' That was something alluded to by our man Michael Gannon on Hotline Live over the weekend, with a new striker sought to compete with Adam Idah and incoming Osmand – who may be expected to assume the Johnny Kenny role of third choice striker with the Irishman freed up for a loan move away. He said: "If you look at the left side with Daizen Maeda – they're looking to bring in a striker, so that will free Maeda up to go back into that position. "He had a brilliant season up front but I still think they'll buy a striker. Jota might be out until 2026 so it's an area they need to address. "Nygren can play both sides so he might be another option there. It's a good profile of signing because he can play right across the forward line and fill in those gaps at times, because there are a few gaps in there. "Osmand might take that third-choice spot. They could give him a year just to get used to his surroundings. There could be a loan deal beyond that, this is a long-term strategy."

Celtic working on surprise J-League defender transfer

Currently playing for Albirex Niigata the 23-year-old primarily plays as a left-sided centre-back but can also provide cover at left full-back. Signed from Toyo University in 2021 six foot tall Inamura secured a J-League Cup runners-up medal last season, but currently finds himself locked in a relegation struggle in Niigata. Celtic are no strangers to the Japanese market, signing the likes of Daizen Maeda, Kyogo Furuhashi, Reo Hatate, Tomoki Iwata and Yuki Kobayashi in the past. The summer transfer window opens this morning with the Parkhead club keen to move quickly to secure more new players. Kieran Tierney's return has been confirmed on a five year deal. Nordsjaelland's Swedish international winger Benjamin Nygren is close to signing for £2million. Teenage Fulham striker Callum Osmand is also close to finalising a cross border move to Glasgow, while goalkeeper Ross Doohan has agreed a pre-contract move from Aberdeen as Scott Bain's replacement. Read more: Parkhead scouts have also tracked Red Star Belgrade's teenage defender Veljko Milosavljevic and the club are in the market for another winger in anticipation of bids for Nicholas Kuhn later in the window. The German wide man, shortlisted for PFA Scotland player of the season, could be one of a number of players to attract interest this summer. Scotland defender Greg Taylor is close to moving overseas under freedom of contract while Leeds United and Sunderland have been credited with an interest in key central defender Cameron Carter-Vickers. Midfielder Hatate is also keen to test himself in a top five league, while last season's top scorer Maeda has yet to agree to a new contract.
