Daim's wife seeks IPCC probe over alleged police inaction
PUTRAJAYA: Toh Puan Na'imah Abdul Khalid, the wife of former finance minister Tun Daim Zainuddin, has urged the Independent Police Conduct Commission (IPCC) to investigate a report alleging 'abuse of power at the highest levels of government, following delays in police action'. This follows a Bloomberg report last year which, citing sources, claimed that the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) was instructed to investigate Daim, as well as former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and his sons. Na'imah said that despite lodging a police report on the matter nine months ago, no investigation officer (IO) had been assigned to the case. "In September last year, there was a report by Bloomberg stating that they had information that the prime minister had given instructions to the MACC to investigate my late husband, Tun Dr Mahathir, as well as our families. "Soon after, I made a police report because if the contents of the article are true, then it means there was an abuse of power by the prime minister, which is an offence. "However, no investigation has been done, and there has been no follow-up at all until today. "We also do not even know who the IO is for this report, which is why I came to the IPCC to find out why the police have not taken any action," she said at a press conference today after lodging a complaint with the IPCC. She was accompanied by her lawyers Rajesh Nagarajan and Sachpreetraj Singh. Asked whether she was given a timeline for the investigation to take place by the IPCC, Na'imah said she was informed that it would take two to three weeks. Last year, a Bloomberg report, citing sources, claimed that the MACC was instructed to investigate Daim as well as former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad and his sons. According to the report, the instruction was purportedly given by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, a claim the Prime Minister's Office denied. Anwar also said the government was considering legal action against Bloomberg over the report that MACC acted on his instructions during investigations into certain individuals. MACC also denied receiving directives on its investigation and said all enforcement actions were taken "without fear or favour" and interference from any party. Following the report, Na'imah then lodged a police report alleging abuse of power at the highest levels of government. Meanwhile, Na'imah also called for a task force or special commission, similar to those formed in previous high-profile cases such as 1MDB, to be established for the investigation. "There should be a commission or something similar to when they handled the 1MDB investigation. "If you are going to investigate something as serious as an allegation of abuse of power, it needs to be brought to a higher level, perhaps through a task force or special committee. "As such, I hope the IPCC will investigate my report without fear or favour and find out why no action has been taken so far," she said.

Daim has now been jailed for four years and four months after he admitted admitted 11 counts of fraud by false representation. Daim then asked for a year's rent upfront along with a 25 percent deposit before pocketing the cash. He even used his own flat in London for the scam - even though his own landlord was trying to boot him out for not paying rent. The fraudster shared a string of photos on social media while spending his ill-gotten gains. Daim also posed on a Jeep beside the beach at Key West in Florida. His scheming came to an end when he was arrested while attempting to get on a plane to Thailand at Heathrow. The amount he stole from his victims ranged from between £10,730 and £19,800 - totalling £204,180. Advertisement Some of the victims, who were as young as 18, managed to reclaim the money through their banks. But one of the prospective tenants was an international student who never got his money back. Judge Silas Reid told Daim: "All of the victims suffered considerable detrimental impact and the amount of money was significant. "Two of the victims suffered serious detrimental effects, one of them his wife was pregnant and they were left in a situation almost unable to afford food, and of course they still needed to secure accommodation. IKEA has shut two UK stores today just weeks after opening a massive new Oxford Street shop. The retail giant, founded in Sweden in 1943, announced its plans to close the Aintree Plan and Order Point store in Liverpool earlier this month. 1 Ikea has closed two stores today (stock) Credit: Getty The smaller Plan & Order Point store provided customers with home furnishing guidance and was devoted to kitchen and bedroom planning. The Aintree store closed its doors for the final time today. According to Ikea, the closure was "a result of valuable learnings which will take the conceptual format in a direction to better suit the needs of UK customers." IKEA Stockport in Merseyway Shopping Centre, which opened just two years ago has also ceased operations today. Current Stockport customers are now being directed to the next nearest main IKEA store, the branch in Ashton-under-Lyne in Tameside. Locals can also now pick up their IKEA purchases from Tesco Extra in Stockport and the Tesco Extra in Stretford as part of Click and Collect. Other Plan and Order points, such as the ones in Dundee, York and Hull, will be adapted to meet those new demands and also include a small range of home furnishing accessories to buy. A spokesperson for Ikea said: 'There has been an increased demand for Click and Collect services, a desire to shop a smaller selection of home furnishing accessories, as well as the ability to return goods to physical IKEA units, something which, owing to the space available, the current location is unable to offer. 'To better service its customers, future Plan and Order Point openings, including in Dundee, Hull and York will offer these services. I did a haul of the new Oxford Street Ikea whilst on my lunch break & I managed to kit out with bargains under £3 "IKEA also remains committed to trialling new formats including its upcoming small stores, one of which will open in Chester later this year.' The Swedish retailer had 22 stores across the UK after opening its first branch in Warrington, Cheshire in 1987. IKEA recently opened a new shop on London's Oxford Street. It's set over three floors and 5,400 square metres compared with the average size of 30,000 square meters for most of IKEA's locations. You'll be pleased to know that along with the Swedish meatballs, the bargain hot dogs, fish and chips, and Daim cake are all still on the menu. A plate of eight meatballs served with mashed potatoes, peas, cream sauce and lingonberry jam costs its usual bargain price of £5.50. It comes after IKEA opened its own hotel in the Canary Islands. Boasting cheap rooms, a swimming pool and breakfast, it also offers some of their most popular homeware items. Las Dunas de Santa Catalina Boutique House is a new two-star hotel owned by the interiors brand in Gran Canaria. Rooms start from £105 a night, which includes a continental breakfast, and works out to just over £50 a night for two people.

Among the assets seized through an ex parte application are three luxury homes in London and a bank account reportedly valued at RM758.2 million. Daim's widow Na'imah Abdul Khalid has vowed to challenge the seizure and 'to not bow down to bullies'. 'A line has been crossed. If we do not resist, there may soon be no lines left at all, then no Malaysian will be safe from the reach of unchecked power,' she emphasised. HIGHLIGHTS Rafizi in green, trading blows with Anwar? Former law minister Zaid Ibrahim has expressed a desire to see former PKR deputy president Rafizi Ramli go head-to-head with Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim in the next general election.
