Child seriously injured and two others hurt in crash on A1(M) near Letchworth
A child has been seriously injured and two others hurt after a crash on a busy motorway. Emergency services were called around 4pm on Tuesday, after a black DS 4 and a grey Toyota Yaris were involved in a crash on the northbound carriageway near junction 9 for Letchworth, in Hertfordshire. One child, who was a passenger in the DS 4, sustained serious injuries and was taken to hospital. Two further occupants of the car, along with the driver of the Toyota, sustained minor injuries. Sergeant Luke Morley, from the Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire Road Policing Unit, said: 'Our enquiries are continuing, and I am urging anyone with information to please come forward. 'Did you witness what happened, or have any further information to assist the investigation? "If you have dash cam footage in relation to the collision, please upload this via DAMS. 'Finally, I would like to thank members of the public that stopped and provided first aid until emergency services arrived, and for their co-operation while road closures were in place.'

It's like Lexus is to Toyota, or Infiniti is (was) to Nissan. And even if you did need me to tell you, I just did. The theory is that the cars have a very premium feel, with high-quality materials, fresh and lavish design features, and a more desirable identity. Far from being a posh pastiche of Citroen's French values, they're a riotous celebration of them. In the right colour, it's actually rather gorgeous, with swanky chrome details, narrow lights, and enough slashes and swoops to keep you drinking in the details for a few minutes. Design details combine to make a pretty and unfussy hatchback profile | DS I've been testing the "Pallas" version, which is one of two trim levels, and sits below the "Etoile" - although you wouldn't know it was effectively a base-spec to look around the interior. For around £35,000, in the case of the hybrid model I've been testing, you get a very generous amount of toys, in a beautifully sculpted cabin, you get a 10" touchscreen, adaptive cruise control, reversing camera, mood lighting, and keyless entry and start. The dashboard strikes a balance between attractive minimalism and sensible functionality | DS The ride is every bit as good as you'd expect from a car carrying the iconic DS brand, and there's a trick active suspension system available on top models that scans the road ahead to adjust damping - but it's honestly quite lovely without it. Inside there's plenty of space, a 430-litre boot, and a refreshing array of physical buttons, which blend neatly into the dashboard's otherwise minimalist design. Above the standard Stellantis gear selector is a "Smart Touch" screen, which allows you to set up gestures for shortcuts and pinch-zoom the map. I didn't really use it, to be honest. Lexus tried a similar thing once and didn't make it work, and I didn't find this a lot better. It might be the base model on paper, but it didn't feel like one by any means. My test car cost £36,740 with a few choice options, and that makes it a credible rival to some of the German class leaders. Ford issues recall for Ranger bakkie in South Africa
Ford has issued a recall for certain Ford Ranger models built between October and November 2024 at its Silverton assembly plant in Pretoria. Ford has identified that in some of the affected vehicles an incorrect front lower control arm may have been fitted on the left-hand side of the vehicle. This may cause a degradation in wheel control and separation of the joint may result in loss of control of the affected wheel with a corresponding effect on vehicle handling increasing the risk of crash or injury. Ford reported the issue to the National Consumer Commission (NCC) and said about 25 vehicles were affected in South Africa and Botswana. Ford is notifying affected customers who will be asked to take their vehicle to a dealership to have the defect repaired under warranty. Earlier in May, the NCC informed the public about recalls for the Jeep Wrangler, Chrysler 300C, Citroën C4, DS4 and DS5 models, Mercedes-Benz CLA (118), S-Class (model series 223), Audi, VW Polo Sedan and Volvo XC90.

Major car brands recall several vehicles over safety issues
The National Consumer Commission (NCC) says it has been informed by car manufacturers that several brands are being recalled over safety issues. These are Jeep Wrangler, Chrysler 300c, Citroën C4, DS4 and DS5 models, Mercedes-Benz CLA (118), S-class (model series 223), Audi, VW Polo sedan and Volvo XC90. The NCC said Stellantis South Africa told them that the Jeep-Wrangler and Jeep-Wrangler Chrysler 300c models would be recalled due to a defect in the Takata airbag. 'According to the supplier, the passenger airbag inflator may rupture due to excessive internal pressure during normal airbag deployment events. In the event of an inflator rupture, metal fragments could strike the vehicle occupants, which may result in serious injury or death,' the NCC said. It said the Citroën C4, DS4 and DS5 models, distributed from 2009 to 2016, would be recalled due to an airbag inflator that may burst. 'The potentially high energetic deployment of the inflator may lead to metal fragments detaching from the bursting inflator, and these parts could fly in the direction of the driver or occupants in the vehicle, capable of causing serious injury or possibly death in a worst-case scenario.' The NCC said Mercedes-Benz AG South Africa informed them that the length of the brake hoses on the rear axle of certain CLA (118 platforms) and S-class (model series 223) vehicles might not have met the specifications. 'This, according to the supplier, will lead to a reduced braking performance in one of the two brake circuits, increasing the risk of an accident caused by the brake fluid loss.' Audi South Africa says it's recalling 46 of the affected Audi-Tron GT vehicles. 'This is caused by some individual cell modules of the high-voltage battery that may display technical irregularities. The high-voltage battery may overheat, resulting in an acute fire hazard, with the associated risk of severe fatal injuries to people inside and or outside the vehicle, as well as significant property damage,' Audi said. Volkswagen is recalling 905 affected VW Polo sedans. 'According to the supplier, the latch plates for the rear seat belt were produced with insufficient hardness. Therefore, in the event of powerful deceleration (accident or hard braking), there may be a reduced retention or protective effect and related increased risk of injury.' Volvo Car South Africa said the recall of 27 Volvo (XC90 models years 2020-2022) is due to potential issues with the high-voltage battery which may lead to overheating. Consumers are urged to visit the nearest authorised dealership for a check or repair/ replacements where necessary.
