Gov't studying to impose 50% discount for senior citizens riding LRT-1, LRT-2, MRT-3

The government is studying if the increase of discounts given to students when riding the LRT-1, LRT-2, and MRT-3 could also be applied to senior citizens, Palace Press Officer Undersecretary Atty. Claire Castro said Friday. ''Inaaral pa po iyan,'' Castro said during a press briefing. (That is being studied.) ''As much as possible, kung puwede nga pong ilibre lahat, iyon ang gusto ng Pangulo. Pero aaralin po iyan at hindi naman po natin agad-agad maibibigay or kakayaning maibigay. Inaaral po ngayon iyan sa kasalukuyan,'' she added. (As much as possible, the President wishes to make it free for everyone. But, we will study that and we cannot implement that immediately. That is being studied.) The Department of Transportation (DOTr) has announced the increased discount for all students from 20% to 50% for LRT-1, LRT-2, and MRT-3 starting Friday. Under the Expanded Senior Citizens Act, Student Fare Discount Act, and Magna Carta for Persons with Disability, senior citizens, students, and persons with disabilities are entitled to a 20% discount in public transportation fares. The promo is valid for Single Journey Ticket only and not applicable for Beep Cards or Stored Value Tickets. Students must buy the ticket at the ticket counter to avail of the promo. — RSJ, GMA Integrated News

5 airport police allegedly involved in extortion of taxi drivers sacked, says DOTr

The five airport police who are named in an alleged extortion scheme with taxi drivers have been suspended, Department of Transportation (DOTr) Vince Dizon said in a statement. Secretary Dizon also ordered the Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) to conduct an investigaton "in line with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.'s directive to government workers to serve the Filipinos and not to abuse their authority." 'Paulit-ulit na sinasabi ng Pangulo na dapat hindi natin pinapahirapan ang mga kababayan natin,' Secretary Dizon said. (The President repeatedly says that we should not make our countrymen suffer.) 'Ipapasuspende na natin itong mga ito. Tapos immediate proceedings na ito for termination,' he added. (We will suspend them. Then it's immediate proceedings for termination.) A taxi driver, who went viral for overcharging a passenger, earlier told Secretary Dizon that drivers at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) charge high taxi fares because they have to give 40 percent of their earnings to the airport police. 'According dun sa kwento ni Felix [Taxihub] ang nagpapatakbo ng raket dito ay yung airport police. Sila ang nagiimpose ng mahal na rate at dun sa mamahaling rate na yun kumukuha sila ng 40-percent kaya ang naghihirap yung mga pasahero natin,' Secretary Dizon said in a statement. (According to Felix [Taxihub], the one running the racket here is the airport police. They are the ones who impose expensive rates and from that expensive rate, they take 40-percent, so our passengers are suffering.) 'Pagka hindi ka sumunod at nagcharge ka ng mababa at hindi nagremit nung hinihingi nila, either huhulihin ka o hindi ka papapasukin ng airport,' he added. (If you don't comply and charge less and don't remit what they ask, you will either be arrested or the airport will not let you in.) Dizon said that these "unscrupulous acts" will severely affect the country's tourism. — BAP, GMA Integrated News

DOTr studying busway for España-Quezon Ave. route

The Department of Transportation is studying a possible busway for the España Boulevard to Quezon Avenue route similar to the EDSA model. In a Saksi report on Tuesday, DOTr Secretary Vince Dizon acknowledged there is a lack of buses, particularly for students, in the approximately 8-kilometer stretch from Manila to Quezon City and vice versa. He said the DOTr is conducting a feasibility study that is expected to be completed in 2026. Dizon expressed confidence that up to three operational stations of the Metro Manila Subway Project will be operational by the end of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. 's term. Three of the five major right-of-way issues have been resolved while the remaining two are under discussion. DOTr has also accepted three proposals for the planned Integrated Terminal Exchange for Northern Metro Manila which is expected to be finished in 2028. —RF, GMA Integrated News

DOTr eyes España-Quezon Avenue busway system

The Department of Transportation (DOTr) is eyeing to replicate the EDSA Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) System or EDSA Busway model in other major thoroughfares in Metro Manila, particularly España Boulevard in Manila and Quezon Avenue in Quezon City. 'We need more of those (BRTs),' Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon said at the Economic Journalists Association of the Philippines (EJAP) Infrastructure Forum in Makati City. 'To me, the most viable and the most needed one is España to Quezon Avenue. That is very important. Busway [at] España, Quezon Avenue. That is going to be very viable…That's wide enough for a busway,' Dizon said. The Transportation chief said there are currently no buses serving commuters, especially students, in the España-Quezon Avenue stretch. 'We're doing FS (feasibility study) now,' he said, adding tthat the completion of the study would be 'hopefully next year.' Asked if the España-Quezon Avenue Busway will be operates by the private sector, Dizon said, 'I think we have to do it government muna…then we'll privatize the O&M (operations and maintenance).' 'It is not difficult to build. Kita mo naman [EDSA] Busway, pandemic lang ginawa nun,' he added. — BAP, GMA Integrated News
