Proteas Women ‘big dawg' Annerie Dercksen eager to shine with the bat in Windies T20 series

Annerie Dercksen Annerie Dercksen hopes to swing her bat for the Proteas Women against the West Indies today. Photo: BackpagePix Image: BackpagePix Proteas Women big hitting all-rounder Annerie Dercksen looked eager to sink her teeth a little into the West Indies in the upcoming T20 series. Dercksen is coming off a somewhat dull ODI series, having not enjoyed the same level of success with the bat as she did in Sri Lanka. But the conditions in the Caribbean were something different entirely, and so too, the situations she batted in. Dercksen scored her maiden century against Sri Lanka in the final game of the tri-series last month, but said she had to play a more high-risk style of batting against the Windies. Regardless, the Proteas claimed the ODI series 2-1, with a comfortable 166-run victory via the DLS method in the deciding match this week. The 24-year-old's bowling has been sharp during the ODI series, however, taking two wickets in five balls on Tuesday. With the series now behind her, Dercksen looked eager to get back on the field and make some contributions with the bat, hopefully on the same level as her final game against Sri Lanka last month – when she scored her maiden century. 'Looking back on Sri Lanka, this was probably a lower scoring series compared to then,' Dercksen said. Video Player is loading. That naturally means you play a more high-risk game. 'The conditions here favour the bowling side a bit as well. 'The pitch slows down quite a bit, but cricket is a funny game. You just need a couple things to go your way, and you're right back in it.' With the ODI series behind her, the 24-year-old looked eager to smack a couple of sixes for dinner during the press conference yesterday. She said the experience she has batting both up and lower down the order favours her going into the T20 series. It's not certain yet what number she will appear in the order, but coach Mandla Mashimbiyi labelled her, as well as Chloe Tryon and Nadine de Klerk, as their 'big hitters'. Ideally, in the T20 format, you would want your big hitters spread out throughout the innings to keep the momentum alive and well for 20 overs.

Proteas Women can still get better despite series win over West Indies, says coach Mandla Mashimbyi

The Proteas Women celebrate their victory over the West Indies in the ODI series in Barbados. Photo: Cricket South Africa Image: Cricket South Africa Recently appointed Proteas Women coach Mandla Mashimbyi was chuffed with his team's performance in the Caribbean, after defeating the West Indies 2-1 in an ODI series on Tuesday night. The Proteas thrashed the home side by 166 runs via the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern (DLS) method after various deluges of rain throughout the evening had interrupted the game. Mashimbyi said the SA team did well to come back after losing the first encounter by four wickets, and had shown real improvement in their bowling, which lacked discipline in some of their games, according to some of the players. 'I'm excited for the girls. In the last few months, they've put in the work, so to come to the West Indies and win a series is a really good thing for them,' Mashimbyi said. 'To come here and put in the performances we've seen, and we still feel we are not where we need to be... and they understand that. 'I'm just happy that they are trying to put things together, but winning at the same time.' Video Player is loading. Next Stay Close ✕ The batting is an area of expertise that the ladies have thrived in over recent tours, putting up 300 runs on more than one occasion last month in Columbo, Sri Lanka, during the tri-series. This time round, in the West Indies, the Proteas looked deadly with the bat again – with opening batters Laura Wolvaardt and Tazmin Brits doing most of the damage during this ODI series. Brits scored a century on Tuesday night with a polished 101, alongside Wolvaardt's 75 to help the Proteas reach 278 in 45.5 overs – a score they successfully defended. There were also stand-out performances in the previous match, with Nondumiso Shangase scoring an 'emotional' half-century. The win was a milestone triumph for coach Mashimbyi as well, as it was his first tour of the West Indies as the head coach of the Proteas Women. Looking ahead to the World Cup in September, which will be played in India, Mashimbyi said the past two tours have given them an opportunity to find their rhythm and order when it comes to the batting line-up, even citing their own 'Bomb Squad' of sorts. Nondumiso Shangase was emotional after hitting a half-century for the Proteas Women against the West Indies. Photo: Cricket South Africa Image: Cricket South Africa 'In terms of our batting order, it's about where you can get maximum impact from each player,' Mashimbyi said. 'It's not necessarily numbers, but where the player can actually put the team in a good position to win matches and that's how we look at it. 'We have tried a couple of combinations, but I was happy with what I've seen. 'Nondi's (Shangase) 50 was nice to see, and batting at three. You've got Dercky, who can bat anywhere in the order, but we know she can have more of an impact batting lower in the order.

Tazmin Brits' century sets up Proteas Women's series win

Tazmin Brits powered the Proteas Women to a series-clinching 166-run win (DLS method) in the third ODI against the West Indies in Barbados yesterday. Brits led the way with a blistering 101 from just 91 balls, striking eight fours and four sixes. She shared a vital opening stand with captain Laura Wolvaardt, who added 75 off 76 deliveries (seven fours), as South Africa posted 278-6 in 45.5 overs before rain brought an early end to their innings. In reply, the West Indies were restricted to 121-9 in 27.5 overs while chasing a revised DLS target of 288 from 39 overs. Seamer Masabata Klaas starred with the ball, claiming career-best figures of 4-25. Put in to bat for the third consecutive match, South Africa's openers made an aggressive start. Wolvaardt and Brits tore into the West Indian attack, racing to 83/0 in the powerplay. Both batters cruised to half-centuries, with Brits reaching her fourth ODI century in style. The breakthrough eventually came when spinner Afy Fletcher (3/53) had Brits caught, ending the 184-run opening stand in the 27th over. As South Africa passed 200, the West Indies struck with three quick wickets. Fletcher removed Wolvaardt and Nondumiso Shangase (nine), while Hayley Matthews (1-46) dismissed Suné Luus (four), leaving the tourists at 207-4. A rain delay followed shortly after Luus' dismissal. When play resumed, Marizanne Kapp (34*) anchored two useful partnerships, 27 with Sinalo Jafta (11) and 32 with Annerie Dercksen (12), before both were dismissed by Jahzara Claxton (1-48) and Aaliyah Alleyne (1-36) respectively. Kapp and Chloé Tryon helped lift South Africa to 278-6 in the 46th over before another rain interruption brought their innings to a premature end. Following more rain delays, the West Indies were eventually set a revised target of 288 in 39 overs. With the bat, the hosts suffered four early blows as Klaas and Kapp (1-7) ripped through the top order, dismissing Matthews (eight), Qiana Joseph (one), Zaida James (one) as well as Chinelle Henry (nought) for just 10 runs within four overs before the heavens opened up again. Upon resumption, Nonkululeko Mlaba (2-25) joined in, removing Jannillea Glasgow (eight) and Shemaine Campbelle (12) to leave the Windies reeling at 40-6. A defiant partnership between Alleyne (32) and Claxton (43) briefly lifted spirits, taking the total past 100. However, Klaas returned to break the stand, and Dercksen (2-1) closed out the innings with two wickets in a single over, as the hosts were restricted to 121-9. Former captain Stafanie Taylor did not bat due to an injury sustained earlier in the match. The series now shifts to the T20 format, with the first of three matches scheduled for Friday (16:00 SA time) at the Three Ws Oval. Series Sealed In Style! 📸🇿🇦 Congratulations to our Proteas Women for clinching the ODI series against the West Indies with grit, passion and pure class! 🏏 A team that plays together, wins together.#AlwaysRising #WozaNawe — Proteas Women (@ProteasWomenCSA) June 18, 2025 Scorecard The post Brits century sets up Proteas Women's series win appeared first on SA Cricketmag. Tazmin Brits leads Proteas Women to commanding series win over West Indies

Proteas Women batter Tazmin Brits celebrates her century against the West Indies with a sun salutation yoga pose. Photo: Cricket South Africa Image: Cricket South Africa The Proteas Women thrashed the West Indies by 166 runs via the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern (DLS) method in the final ODI to clinch a 2-1 series victory on Tuesday night. The third and final game at the 3Ws Oval in Barbados was bogged down by a bit of rain, but the game eventually got under way before a couple hours delay. The Green and Gold went in to bat first for the third consecutive game and by this time, already knew what the plan was - destroy. Opening batters Laura Wolvaardt and Tazmin Brits did just that, thrashing 83 runs in the first powerplay of the game. Brits' destruction with the bat saw her record the only South African century of this series, knocking 101 from 91 balls, with an impressive strike rate of 110. Brits slapped eight fours and four sixes in her innings, and did not look fazed by the West Indian bowling attack. Captain Wolvaardt was her usual composed self and played a leader's innings with 76 off 75 balls. Wickets fell in the middle, with a few scores to add to the openers' grand tally. Marizanne Kapp was the only other contributor with the bat with her 34 runs. The rain returned once again and ended the South African innings on 278/6 in 45.5 overs, asking quite a bit from the Windies, especially in the wet conditions. The Proteas attack came out firing, picking up the top four batters within five overs and putting a ton of pressure on their middle order, which crumbled. Their top-six batters had only scored 30 runs Aaliyah Alleyne (32 off 49 balls) and Jahzara Claxton (42 off 32) put up scores for their team in toward the tail-end, but it was a little, too late.
